Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Complexity Science and Chaos Theory are fascinating areas of scientific research with wide-ranging applications. The interdisciplinary nature and ubiquity of complexity and chaos are features that provides scientists with a motivation to pursue general theoretical tools and frameworks. Complex systems give rise to emergent behaviors, which in turn produce novel and interesting phenomena in science, engineering, as well as in the socio-economic sciences. The aim of all Symposia on Chaos and Complex Systems (CCS) is to bring together scientists, engineers, economists and social scientists, and to discuss the latest insights and results obtained in the area of corresponding nonlinear-system complex (chaotic) behavior. Especially for the “4th International Interdisciplinary Chaos Symposium on Chaos and Complex Systems,” which took place April 29th to May 2nd, 2012 in Antalya, Turkey, the scope of the symposium had been further enlarged so as to encompass the presentation of work from circuits to econophysics, and from nonlinear analysis to the history of chaos theory. The corresponding proceedings collected in this volume address a broad spectrum of contemporary topics, including but not limited to networks, circuits, systems, biology, evolution and ecology, nonlinear dynamics and pattern formation, as well as neural, psychological, psycho-social, socio-economic, management complexity and global systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Japanese culture the concept of katachi has special significance, connoting relationships and connectedness. Although katachi cannot be translated precisely, it corresponds most closely to "form," "shape," "pattern," or "Gestalt". The contemporary study of katachi is interdisciplinary and encompasses virtually all scientific and aesthetic endeavors. Katachi research seeks to bridge the gap between cultures - whether the "two cultures" of C.P. Snow or the contrasting cultures of East and West. To help achieve this aim and to foster international cooperation, the interdisciplinary symposium titled "Katachi "U" Symmetry" was convened in Tsukuba, Japan, November 21 - 25, 1994. With many participants from differing backgrounds and cultural perspectives, the symposium was the culmination of 15 years of work in the field. Like-minded researchers and philosophers came together from two movements in interdisciplinary studies of katachi and symmetry that arose in the 1980s, one in Japan, the other in Hungary. The proceedings of the symposium will stimulate and provoke the interest of scientists and mathematicians, engineers and architects, philosophers and semioticians - indeed, all those with a lively sense of curiosity and a wide-ranging intellect.

Book excerpt: This Special Issue comprises selected papers from the proceedings of the 5th International Electronic Conference on Sensors and Applications, held on 15–30 November 2018, on sciforum.net, an online platform for hosting scholarly e-conferences and discussion groups. In this 5th edition of the electronic conference, contributors were invited to provide papers and presentations from the field of sensors and applications at large, resulting in a wide variety of excellent submissions and topic areas. Papers which attracted the most interest on the web or that provided a particularly innovative contribution were selected for publication in this collection. These peer-reviewed papers are published with the aim of rapid and wide dissemination of research results, developments, and applications. We hope this conference series will grow rapidly in the future and become recognized as a new way and venue by which to (electronically) present new developments related to the field of sensors and their applications.

Here, Liberman's landmark scholarship lay the groundwork for his forthcoming multivolume analytic dictionary of the English language. A Bibliography of English Etymology is a broadly conceptualized reference tool that provides source materials for etymological research. For each word's etymology, there is a bibliographic entry that lists the word origin's primary sources, specifically, where it was first found in use. Featuring the history of more than 13,000 English words, their cognates, and their foreign antonyms, this is a full-fledged compendium of resources indispensable to any scholar of word origins.

Book excerpt: Tackling a topic that has particular appeal in the age of digital design, this well-founded introduction to the subject of parquet deformation fills a gap. These subtle, intricate geometric transformations, best known through the "Metamorphosis" series by M. C. Escher, were introduced to design curricula by American professor William S. Huff in the 1960s. The book brings together scholarly articles by the most important authors in the field and material collected in the archives of the Ulm School of Design in Germany, juxtaposed with extensive illustrations of two- and three-dimensional works created at the Vienna University of Technology. Written for anyone interested in the fields of design and geometry, this book aims to inform and inspire.

Concepts, Applications and Markets for Micro/Nanosatellites in a New Information World". Thus, the Symposium addressed the crucial question: are small satellites the saviour of space programmes around the world It did this from the unique perspective of the International Space today? University - the interdisciplinary, international and intercultural perspective. This Symposium brought together a variety of people working on small satellites - engineers, scientists, planners, providers, operators, policy makers and business executives, together with representatives from regulatory bodies, from national and international organizations, and from the finance sector, and also entrepreneurs. Discussion and debate were encouraged, based on the papers presented and those published here.

Book excerpt: The first edition of Connections was chosen by the National Association of Publishers (USA) as the best book in “Mathematics, Chemistry, and Astronomy — Professional and Reference” in 1991. It has been a comprehensive reference in design science, bringing together in a single volume material from the areas of proportion in architecture and design, tilings and patterns, polyhedra, and symmetry. The book presents both theory and practice and has more than 750 illustrations. It is suitable for research in a variety of fields and as an aid to teaching a course in the mathematics of design. It has been influential in stimulating the burgeoning interest in the relationship between mathematics and design. In the second edition there are five new sections, supplementary, as well as a new preface describing the advances in design science since the publication of the first edition. Contents: Proportion in ArchitectureSimilarityThe Golden MeanGraphsTilings with PolygonsTwo-Dimensional Networks and LatticesPolyhedra: Platonic SolidsTransformation of the Platonic Solids ITransformation of the Platonic Solids IIPolyhedra: Space FillingIsometries and MirrorsSymmetry of the Plane Readership: Polytechnic students, architects, designers, mathematicians and general readers. Keywords:Design Science;Art;Architecture;Geometry;Polyhedra;Tilings;Graph Theory;Symmetry;Proportion;Golden MeanReviews: “This book, on the mathematics of natural and artful form, is a lively new entrant to the small shelf of those fine works.” Scientific American “If I had only one book in my library to which I refer for mathematics questions in art and architecture, this would be the one.” Nexus Network Journal “A worthy volume rediscovers the golden mean for readers in the postgeometry generation.” BYTE “… Kappraff's book is nothing less than the first textbook of design science.”Bulletin of the Buckminster Fuller Institute “This is no less than an early and strong move toward implementing Buckminster Fuller's call for a Comprehensive Anticipatory Design Science. Even a less-than-rigorous reading will convince you that something important is being presented here.” Whole Earth Review “For the visually oriented person with a hunger to understand pattern, Connections can be a bridge to a new world.” American Journal of Physics “A spectacular presentation of design science — ‘the grammar of space’ — that explores with rich details instances of similarity, proportion, tilings, graphs, lattices, polyhedra, isometries, and symmetry in art, architecture, engineering, and science. Punctuated with exercises and problems (thus making the monograph useful as a course or seminar text); illustrated with over 200 figures; supported by an extensive multi-disciplinary bibliography that is well-referenced to the text. A superb option for interdisciplinary seminars.” American Mathematical Monthly
