Book excerpt: The drama of the Old Testament comes to life as Judah's most notorious king ascends to the throne in this gripping novel from the award-winning author of Isaiah's Daughter. At eight years old, Shulle has known only life in a small village with her loving but peculiar father. When Uncle Shebna offers shelter in Jerusalem in exchange for Shulle's help tutoring King Manasseh, Judah's five-year-old co-regent who displays the same peculiarities as her father, she's eager to experience the royal court. But Shulle soon realizes the limits of her father's strict adherence to Yahweh's Law when Uncle Shebna teaches her of the starry hosts and their power. Convinced Judah must be freed from Yahweh's chains, she begins the subtle swaying of young Manasseh, using her charm and skills on the boy no one else understands. When King Hezekiah dies, twelve-year-old Manasseh is thrust onto Judah's throne, bitter at Yahweh and eager to marry the girl he adores. Assyria's crown prince favors Manasseh and twists his brilliant mind toward cruelty, beginning Shulle's long and harrowing journey to discover the Yahweh she'd never known, guided with loving wisdom by Manasseh's mother: Isaiah's daughter, the heartbroken Hephzibah. Amid Judah's dark days, a desperate remnant emerges, claiming the Lord's promise, "Though we're helpless now, we're never hopeless--because we serve El Shaddai." Shulle is among them, a girl who becomes a queen through Isaiah's legacy.

Download or read book Fatherless: Broken to Whole written by Mary Ann Birdsong-Saunders and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2016-02-26 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatherlessness is at epidemic proportions in our nation. Fatherless: Broken to Whole brings an awareness of an escalating problem in our nation and communities and offers a solution that is sure to bring about change. Taking a biblical viewpoint, this book presents what Father God is like and the hope and inner healing He offers the broken. Fatherless: Broken to Whole speaks to two groups: first, to the fatherless and second, to people who will commit to advocate and pray for them. God wants the fatherless, whether ten months old or one hundred years old, to come to know they are loved and of great value. He offers a way to enable them to overcome confusion, feelings of guilt, abandonment, hopelessness, and feeling unloved. God wants the fatherless to see Him as Daddy. I have always wanted to treat you as My children and give you the best land, the most beautiful on earth. I wanted you to call Me Father and not turn from Me (Jeremiah 3:19 CEV).

Book Synopsis Death in the Iron Age II and in First Isaiah by : Christopher B. Hays
Download or read book Death in the Iron Age II and in First Isaiah written by Christopher B. Hays and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2011 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Death is one of the major themes of 'First Isaiah, ' although it has not generally been recognized as such. Images of death are repeatedly used by the prophet and his earliest tradents. The book begins by concisely summarizing what is known about death in the Ancient Near East during the Iron Age II, covering beliefs and practices in Mesopotamia, Egypt, Syria-Palestine, and Judah/Israel. Incorporating both textual and archeological data, Christopher B. Hays surveys and analyzes existing scholarly literature on these topics from multiple fields.Focusing on the text's meaning for its producers and its initial audiences, he describes the ways in which the 'rhetoric of death' functioned in its historical context and offers fresh interpretations of more than a dozen passages in Isa 5-38. He shows how they employ the imagery of death that was part of their cultural contexts, and also identifies ways in which they break new creative ground. This holistic approach to questions that have attracted much scholarly attention in recent decades produces new insights not only for the interpretation of specific biblical passages, but also for the formation of the book of Isaiah and for the history of ancient Near Eastern religions

Book Synopsis Isaiah's Kingship Polemic by : William D. Barker
Download or read book Isaiah's Kingship Polemic written by William D. Barker and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2014-11-19 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William D. Barker analyzes a wide array of possible ancient Near Eastern backgrounds to Isaiah 24-27. He finds that there is a uniquely Ugaritic background to the chapters, with evidence of a literary framework and narrative progression that has been intentionally adopted and creatively adapted from either the Ba'al Myth (KTU 1.1-1.6) itself or a shared tradition between ancient Ugarit and ancient Israel. Barker also closely examines Isaiah 24-27 in the light of the Ugaritic material and thereby contributes to the resolution of some of the historic questions about the interpretation, genre, dating, and function of Isaiah 24-27. A new epithet for the chapters is also proposed.
