Book Synopsis I Need Your Love - Is That True? by : Byron Katie
Download or read book I Need Your Love - Is That True? written by Byron Katie and published by Harmony. This book was released on 2006-11-28 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Loving What Is, bestselling author Byron Katie introduced thousands of people to her simple and profound method of finding happiness through questioning the mind. Now, I Need Your Love—Is That True? examines a universal, age-old source of anxiety: our relationships with others. In this groundbreaking book, Katie helps you question everything you have been taught to do to gain love and approval. In doing this, you discover how to find genuine love and connection. The usual advice offered in self-help books and reinforced by our culture advocates a stressful, all-consuming quest for love and approval. We are advised to learn self-marketing and manipulative skills—how to attract, impress, seduce, and often pretend to be something we aren’t. This approach doesn’t work. It leaves millions of walking wounded—those who, having failed to find love or appreciation, blame themselves and conclude that they are unworthy of love. I Need Your Love—Is That True? helps you illuminate every area in your life where you seem to lack what you long for most—the love of your spouse, the respect of your child, a lover’s tenderness, or the esteem of your boss. Through its penetrating inquiry, you will quickly discover the falseness of the accepted ways of seeking love and approval, and also of the mythology that equates love with need. Using the method in this book, you will inquire into painful beliefs that you’ve based your whole life on—and be delighted to see them evaporate. Katie shows you how unraveling the knots in the search for love, approval, and appreciation brings real love and puts you in charge of your own happiness. “Everyone agrees that love is wonderful, except when it’s terrible. People spend their whole lives tantalized by love—seeking it, trying to hold on to it, or trying to get over it. Not far behind love, as major preoccupations, come approval and appreciation. From childhood on, most people spend much of their energy in a relentless pursuit of these things, trying out different methods to be noticed, to please, to impress, and to win other people’s love, thinking that’s just the way life is. This effort can become so constant and unquestioned that we barely notice it anymore. This book takes a close look at what works and what doesn’t in the quest for love and approval. It will help you find a way to be happier in love and more effective in all your relationships. What you learn here will bring fulfillment to all kinds of relationships, including romantic love, dating, marriage, work, and friendship.” —Byron Katie

Book excerpt: As Maggie listens to a story about a little girl who grew up on the prairies, about a ruler who cut a knot in two, about a shepherd who went looking for a lost sheep, about a king who made a foolish wish, and finally, about a giant who lived in a beautiful garden, she discovers that some stories are true because they actually happened. Other stories are true because they tell us something true about a real person, place, or event, even if what they describe did not happen. And some stories are true - even if they are completely made up - because they tell us something true about our own experiences.

Book Synopsis Daddy, Is That Story True, or Were You Just Preaching? by : Rev. James W. Moore
Download or read book Daddy, Is That Story True, or Were You Just Preaching? written by Rev. James W. Moore and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2012-05-01 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular author James W. Moore recalls how several years ago, while delivering the sermon at his church one Sunday morning, he had told a moving story about a boy and his dog. The author’s then-five-year-old son, Jeff, was fascinated by the story, but feeling a bit uncertain about some of the details of it, during the family’s car ride home from church, Jeff asked his father, “Daddy, is that story true, or were you just preaching?” Highly amused by Jeff’s question, Jim Moore went on to explain to his young son that there are two kinds of stories: TRUE stories, stories that happened factually in history; and TRUTH stories, stories like Jesus’ parables, which are shared to underscore a dramatic truth in life. The several short chapters and stories in this book are designed to highlight such life-truths, with chapter titles such as “Go out Singing,” “Roadblocks,” “Should I Forgive?” “One Step at a Time,” “Who’s in Control Here?” “What Can One Person Do?” “Tell Me, Please, How to Be Happy,” “Why not You?” “Keep on Keeping On,” “Jesus: The Message and the Messenger,” “The Importance of Uniqueness,” and others. This book contains a discussion guide.

When Eve Petworth writes to Jackson Cooper to praise a scene in one of his books, they discover a mutual love of cookery and food. Their friendship blossoms against the backdrop of Jackson's colorful, but ultimately unsatisfying, love life and Eve's tense relationship with her soon-to-be married daughter. As each of them offers, from behind the veils of semi-anonymity and distance, wise and increasingly affectionate counsel to the other, they both begin to confront their problems and plan a celebratory meeting in Paris -- a meeting that Eve fears can never happen.

Book Synopsis Saving Truth From Paradox by : Hartry Field
Download or read book Saving Truth From Paradox written by Hartry Field and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-03-06 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Saving Truth from Paradox is an ambitious investigation into paradoxes of truth and related issues, with occasional forays into notions such as vagueness, the nature of validity, and the Gödel incompleteness theorems. Hartry Field presents a new approach to the paradoxes and provides a systematic and detailed account of the main competing approaches. Part One examines Tarski's, Kripke>'s, and Lukasiewicz>'s theories of truth, and discusses validity and soundness, and vagueness. Part Two considers a wide range of attempts to resolve the paradoxes within classical logic. In Part Three Field turns to non-classical theories of truth that that restrict excluded middle. He shows that there are theories of this sort in which the conditionals obey many of the classical laws, and that all the semantic paradoxes (not just the simplest ones) can be handled consistently with the naive theory of truth. In Part Four, these theories are extended to the property-theoretic paradoxes and to various other paradoxes, and some issues about the understanding of the notion of validity are addressed. Extended paradoxes, involving the notion of determinate truth, are treated very thoroughly, and a number of different arguments that the theories lead to "revenge problems" are addressed. Finally, Part Five deals with dialetheic approaches to the paradoxes: approaches which, instead of restricting excluded middle, accept certain contradictions but alter classical logic so as to keep them confined to a relatively remote part of the language. Advocates of dialetheic theories have argued them to be better than theories that restrict excluded middle, for instance over issues related to the incompleteness theorems and in avoiding revenge problems. Field argues that dialetheists>' claims on behalf of their theories are quite unfounded, and indeed that on some of these issues all current versions of dialetheism do substantially worse than the best theories that restrict excluded middle.
Book Synopsis I Need Your Love - Is That True? by : Byron Katie
Download or read book I Need Your Love - Is That True? written by Byron Katie and published by Random House. This book was released on 2008-09-04 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Byron Katie's extremely simple programme called The Work was explored in her previous, hugely popular, book, Loving What Is. In it she explained how easy it is to be confused by the mental gymnastics we all play in our minds, and how looking closely at our thoughts - and whether they are true - can bring us a life of integrity and happiness. Her second book questions everything we have been taught to think and do to find love and approval and shows how to make the transition to an effective, non-manipulative way of connecting with others. When you live your life focused on thoughts such as 'I need a man' or 'She doesn't care about me' you live in fear and end up lonely, stressed, heartbroken and depressed. However, when you start to explore The Work, you can begin to enquire into many of the unquestioned beliefs you have lived by, and can begin to change. Through 'I Need Your Love - Is It True?' readers can explore what happens in their mind when they believe they need love, appreciation and approval. When they realise the truth of what's really going on inside them there is no doubt they can find real love and mutual understanding, expecially with the help of Byron Katie's wisdom and compassion.
Download or read book True Roots written by Ronnie Citron-Fink and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2019-06-04 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like 75% of American women, Ronnie Citron-Fink dyed her hair, visiting the salon every few weeks to hide gray roots in her signature dark brown mane. She wanted to look attractive, professional, young. Yet as a journalist covering health and the environment, she knew something wasn’t right. All those unpronounceable chemical names on the back of the hair dye box were far from natural. Were her recurring headaches and allergies telltale signs that the dye offered the illusion of health, all the while undermining it? So after twenty-five years of coloring, Ronnie took a leap and decided to ditch the dye. Suddenly everyone, from friends and family to rank strangers, seemed to have questions about her hair. How’d you do it? Are you doing that on purpose? Are you OK? Armed with a mantra that explained her reasons for going gray—the upkeep, the cost, the chemicals—Ronnie started to ask her own questions. What are the risks of coloring? Why are hair dye companies allowed to use chemicals that may be harmful? Are there safer alternatives? Maybe most importantly, why do women feel compelled to color? Will I still feel like me when I have gray hair? True Roots follows Ronnie’s journey from dark dyes to a silver crown of glory, from fear of aging to embracing natural beauty. Along the way, readers will learn how to protect themselves, whether by transitioning to their natural color or switching to safer products. Like Ronnie, women of all ages can discover their own hair story, one built on individuality, health, and truth.
