Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a state-of-the-art review of the fail-safe and damage tolerance approaches, allowing weight savings and increasing aircraft reliability and structural integrity. The application of the damage tolerance approach requires extensive know-how of the fatigue and fracture properties, corrosion strength, potential failure modes and non-destructive inspection techniques, particularly minimum detectable defect and inspection intervals. In parallel, engineering practice involving damage tolerance requires numerical techniques for stress analysis of cracked structures. These evolved from basic mode I evaluations using rough finite element approaches, to current 3D modeling based on energetic approaches as the VCCT, or simulation of joining processes. This book provides a concise introduction to this subject.

Book excerpt: This report documents a study made of the optimization of typical aircraft structural components using the Automated Structural Optimization Program (ASOP) described in AFFDL-TR-70-118. The structures examined were a fuselage structure for a proposed space shuttle orbiter and a wing structure for the same vehicle. Examples are given of practical finite element modeling of these structures.

This book was released on 1991 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem addressed by this report is that the Air Force is not getting full value for the resources expended in the development of finite element models of USAF aircraft structures, both directly and by contractors. Models developed by airframe contractors are usually not made available to the Air Force. Models that are available are often inadequately documented or verified, or their existence may be unknown to those who need them. The problem was assessed by a survey of Air Force organizations and was attacked in three ways. First, software called FEM-X was developed for storage and retrieval of finite element model data along with descriptive information about the data. The software could be used by an Air Force Finite Element Model Center. A proposal for establishment of this Center is the second aspect of modification, and distribution of aircraft models. The third subject addressed by the report is a Mil Standard that is proposed for delivery of finite element models by Air Force contractors.

Download or read book Finite Element Analysis of a Riveted Repair on a Curved Composite Panel written by Scott A. Hamilton and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To analyze the current Aircraft Battle Damage Repair (ABDR) techniques, a finite element model (FEM) of a curved composite panel with a center cutout section was developed and verified against previously obtained modal test results. The FEM was modified using different methods to exhibit the effects of riveting on an aluminum patch to repair the section. The different methods were contrasted against each other and previously obtained modal test results. The panel, a (0/-45/+45/90) sub s layup of AS4/3501 graphite epoxy measuring 12 inches in height and 12.19 inches across its arc length with a 2 by 4 inch cutout at a 0, +45, -45, or 90 degree orientation was modeled using MSC/ NASTRAN QUAD4 elements. The first repair modeling method used a mixture of the aluminum and composite panel properties to represent the overlap region of the patch. The second method used ELAS2 and CONM2 elements to model the rivets, and modelled the panel and the patch separately. GAP elements prevented the patch from deforming through the panel. For the mixed properties, the mode shapes agreed with experimental data at lower frequencies but were distorted at the higher ones and were regularly 5-25% high. Modeling the rivets individually produced matching mode shapes and frequencies regularly within 5% of experimental values.
Book Synopsis Experimental and Numerical Investigation of Wide Area Blunt Impact Damage to Composite Aircraft Structures by : Zhi Ming Chen
Download or read book Experimental and Numerical Investigation of Wide Area Blunt Impact Damage to Composite Aircraft Structures written by Zhi Ming Chen and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to their high performance and weight efficiency, carbon fiber composites are increasingly being used in aircraft primary structure applications. Exposed composite structures (e.g., fuselage lower body) are susceptible accidental impacts by ground service equipment (GSE). The very high mass (over 10,000 kg) of GSE impact can involve high energy (over 1000 J) and thus can induce significant internal damage. Furthermore, the large contact area potentially involved with GSE impact can create significant internal delamination and fiber failure without leaving exterior-visible signs that any damage has occurred. The objectives of the research described herein are to : (1) conduct experimental investigation into the composite aircraft damage caused by GSE impact, (2) examine the small-scale failure modes in focused, element-level studies, (3) establish a finite element modeling methodology involving detailed simulation capability that is validated via small-scale tests, and (4) apply these modeling capabilities to accurately predict full-scale structural behavior without adjustment (e.g., tuning) of modeling input parameters.
