Book excerpt: Excerpt from Is American Radio Democratic: A Study of the American System of Radio Regulation, Control, and Operation as Related to the Democratic Way of Life With Emphasis Upon Its Educational Aspects The radio transmitter, as a piece of, material mechanism, is neutral where human values are concerned. As an instrument, a mechanical device, a product of modern scientific knowledge and inventive ingenuity, the radio is comparable to such other manifestations of human genius as the automobile, the electric light, the airplane, or the rotary press. It may be employed to serve the "higher" purposes of mankind and to enhance individual and collective welfare, as an instrument serving the democratic way of life, or to spread misinformation that excites passion, hatred, and fear. It may be enlisted for the enrichment of life and the conservation of that which man has found of most worth, or it may be directed toward the destruction of his finest and noblest. The President of the United States, in his capacity of public servant, employs the radio as a means for discussing with his vast constituency problems of vital significance to every American citizen. Also, through its facilities the finest in entertainment, music, drama, and literature may be brought into the homes of the humblest and the farthest-away, enriching and refining the lives of millions. An instructor may use it to stimulate thinking and the desire for further investigation on the part of listeners everywhere. On the other hand, the rabble-rouser may make use of the radio to excite blind passion and unconsidered action on the part of vast populations. The dictator may pour through the microphone his ipse dixit pronouncements for the ears of millions while denying them the right to listen to arguments that challenge his authority. The partisan instructor may use it to indoctrinate a vast listening "class," while economic groups may so control its functioning that propaganda suited to maintain their position of privilege and power is spread throughout the country in the guise of education or enlightenment. As technical improvements are made in the instrument it will be possible to do all these things more efficiently. Brian Rosenwald charts the transformation of AM radio entertainers into political kingmakers. By giving voice to the conservative base, they reshaped the Republican Party and fostered demand for a president who sounded as combative and hyperbolic as a talk show host.

Book excerpt: How has American radio—once a grassroots, community-based medium—become a generic service that primarily benefits owners and shareholders and prohibits its listeners from receiving diversity of opinions, ideas, and entertainment through local programming? In The Quieted Voice: The Rise and Demise of Localism in American Radio, Robert L. Hilliard and Michael C. Keith blame the government’s continual deregulation of radio and the corporate obsession with the bottom line in the wake of the far-reaching and controversial Telecommunications Act of 1996. Fighting for greater democratization of the airwaves, Hilliard and Keith call for a return to localism to save radio from rampant media conglomeration and ever-narrowing music playlists—and to save Americans from corporate and government control of public information. The Quieted Voice details radio’s obligation to broadcast in the public’s interest. Hilliard and Keith trace the origins of the public trusteeship behind the medium and argue that local programming is essential to the fulfillment of this responsibility. From historical and critical perspectives, they examine the decline of community-centered programming and outline the efforts of media watchdog and special interest groups that have vigorously opposed the decline of democracy and diversity in American radio. They also evaluate the implications of continuing delocalization of the radio medium and survey the perspectives of leading media scholars and experts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A capacious and stimulating tour de force of the mainstream music industry that reveals the cultural import of even the most deliberately banal performers and songs. Weisbard finds depths in our culture s shallows as he investigates and articulates the cultural construction of such phenomena as Dolly Parton, Elton John, the Isley Brothers, A&M Records, and the rise of radio populism. He further sheds new light on the upheavals in the music industry over the last fifteen years and the implications of them for the audiences the industry has shaped. Each chapter brings us to see afresh precisely that music and those musicians that have become the most familiar and overexposed, by delving into the minutiae of how pop stars and their music were made and framed for repeated consumption in the era dominated by radio."

Book excerpt: In its golden age, American radio both entertained and also fostered programs meant to produce self-governing and opinion-forming individuals, promoting openness to change and tolerance of diversity, familiarity with classical music, and knowledge of world affairs. As author David Goodman argues, the ambitions of radio's golden age have strong significance today as evidence that media regulation in the public interest can have significant and often positive effects.

Book excerpt: "A celebration of the acclaimed television and radio news program Democracy Now! and the extraordinary movements and heroes who have moved our democracy forward. In 1996 Amy Goodman began hosting a show on Pacifica Radio called Democracy Now! to focus on the issues and movements that are too often ignored by the corporate media. Today Democracy Now! is the largest public media collaboration in the US, broadcasting on over 1,400 public television and radio stations around the world, with millions accessing it online at DemocracyNow.org. Now Amy, along with her journalist brother, David, and co-author Denis Moynihan, share stories of the heroes -- the whistleblowers, the organizers, the protesters -- who have brought about remarkable change. This important book looks back over the past two decades of Democracy Now! and the powerful movements and charismatic leaders who are re-shaping our world. Goodman takes the reader along as she goes to where the silence is, bringing out voices from the streets of Ferguson to Staten Island, Wall Street, South Carolina to East Timor -- and other places where people are rising up to demand justice. Democracy Now! is the modern day underground railroad of information, bringing stories from the grassroots to a global audience."--

Book excerpt: An “impressively researched and useful study” of the golden age of radio and its role in American democracy (Journal of American History). In Fireside Politics, Douglas B. Craig provides the first detailed and complete examination of radio’s changing role in American political culture between 1920 and 1940—the medium’s golden age, when it commanded huge national audiences without competition from television. Craig follows the evolution of radio into a commercialized, networked, and regulated industry, and ultimately into an essential tool for winning political campaigns and shaping American identity in the interwar period. Finally, he draws thoughtful comparisons of the American experience of radio broadcasting and political culture with those of Australia, Britain, and Canada. “The best general study yet published on the development of radio broadcasting during this crucial period when key institutional and social patterns were established.” ?Technology and Culture

Democracy is a privilege that carries with it important responsibilities for the people and their representatives. As we look back on this era and determine the future of this nation, Dr. Long Thompson's book will be a resource for Americans who are seeking ways to secure our democracy and our future as a nation." Congressman John Lewis, Georgia's 5th District. Ethical leadership, steeped in integrity and fairness, matters. The future of our nation and our world depends upon the quality of America's character. In this uncompromising, absorbing look at our government and society today, Jill Long Thompson persuasively argues that we all have a meaningful role to play in shaping America's character and future. The citizenry, as well as their elected officials, are responsible for protecting fairness of participation and integrity in elections, as well as in the adoption and execution of laws. In this troubling time when the public is losing trust and confidence in our government, Jill Long Thompson shows us a bipartisan way forward.
