Book excerpt: Fifty years ago, the United Nations Charter proclaimed universal rights to shared prosperity, peace, and security. How far has that vision of world citizenship been realised? Despite advances in human welfare and technology, there is today a growing polarisation between rich and poor. One in four of the world's people live in absolute poverty, unable to meet their basic needs; armed conflict is affecting millions of people; and the global environment is under threat. Yet there is a failure of political will to address the silent emergency of poverty. The Oxfam Poverty Report draws on Oxfam's experience of working in over 70 countries, to examine the causes of poverty and conflict. It identifies the structural forces which deny people their basic rights, and gives a wide range of examples of the ways in which men and women are bringing about positive change at every level, from the household to the international arena. Oxfam believes that it is time to renew the UN vision of universal basic rights. The Report concludes by proposing policy and institutional reforms which would transform international institutions and trading relations, and calls for a new commitment to work together to eradicate poverty and bring sustainable peace and security for all the world's people.

Book excerpt: Conditionality has long been used by the IMF, and more recently by World Bank and bilateral donors, as an instrument for improving the effectiveness of international finance. This collection of essays, by representatives of donors and recipients as well as independent observers, suggests that because of recipients' increased bargaining power, such an improvement has seldom resulted.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The international economic order created at Bretton Woods in 1944 was not crafted with the developing countries principally in mind. Moreover, the nature of the world community has changed profoundly in the last half-century. The problems and opportunities of developing countries have moved to centre stage in today's global economy. The 16 contributors to this volume examine ways in which the international economic system could be reformed in order better to meet the needs and aspirations of the developing world in the coming decades.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines fundamental theoretical and conceptual issues of social change in Latin America in the context of detailed empirical analysis. It challenges the major assumptions and propositions that underlie globalization theory, reworking and fine tuning the concepts of imperialism and social class as relevant to understanding the 'new world order'. The study centers on the structural features of Latin America and the state policies reconcentrating power in the capitalist class at the expense of labor. The study surveys the contradictory tendencies of concentrated wealth and power and the emergence of new socio-political movements and alternative development strategies to the dominant paradigm.

Book excerpt: This book synthesizes knowledge from several fields that are crucial to sustainable rural development: the physical environment, biological and agricultural production, rural sociology and economics. It takes a systems perspective incorporating systems analysis, landscape analysis and soil, water, and land planning. Directed toward graduate students and professionals, it provides a source of information and concepts for those concerned with land and water policies and practice. It presents an integrated approach using practical and applicable models and methods and takes a middle position between an elementary conceptual approach to land and water management and a highly mathematically advanced treatise based exclusively on system modeling. The book is based on almost twenty years of experience in teaching a course on rural planning and the environment, the authors being specialists from universities, research institutions and companies in Europe and North America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the supply-side structural reform in China, this book investigates the impetus, implementation strategy, initial results and theoretical underpinnings of the revolution, assessing its significance in perfecting China’s socialist market economic system. The supply-side structural reform launched in China in 2015 aims to thoroughly resolve the cyclical excess capacity and the habitual imbalance of economic structure; and form a long-term mechanism for economic stability, different from the supply-side policies under the Reagan Administration in the 1980s. Based on the analysis framework of aggregate demand and supply, combined with institutional and structural analysis, the title elucidates the reason, theory, measures and results that ground the reform. It explicates the three-step strategy to ensure the successful outcome, countermeasures against current supply-side problems, upgrading the economic structure, and most importantly the institutional reform and innovation. The author emphasizes the importance of reforming both market and government and advances a “double-effect” model combining the effective market and government. This title will appeal to scholars, students and policymakers interested in economics, macroeconomic control, and the Chinese economy and economic system reform.
