The future of the breed in the new millennium is assessed and blood lines and pedigrees are discussed. The importance of Irish Draught blood in the breeding of show jumpers is emphasised." "This is a book for all who are interested in Irish history, in the equine heritage of the country and in the development of a distinctive breed of fine horses. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: North American Sport Horse Breeder This new reference work, directed to the breeder of sport horses, specifically those in North America, presents the breeder with a fresh way to evaluate equine genetics through the pedigree, a method to identify key individuals in the ancestry that can be dominance building candidates, and with instruction on how to use this information to construct the most advantageous mating. The application of these breeding principles is focused on the Olympic-style sport horse but is just as applicable to all other equine breeding endeavors. Sure to surprise many is the revelation of how long and how committed North Americans have been in creating and enjoying true sport horses. The history section identifies the untapped sport potential that resides in our usually ignored domestic breeds; many of them carry far more sport DNA than we see in the genetic spectrum of the currently popular European horse. Kathleen Hiney Kirsan You may say I am the least likely person to have written a book about sport horse breeding. I was not part of the horse culture in my younger years, and I did not even own a horse until I was 39. I was born in Boston and raised in its suburbs; I spent most of my adult life working in the construction industry. My entry into breeding began with a Thoroughbred mare that was a cull from the racetrack. I became intrigued with the names in her pedigree, and this then began my study of bloodlines and heredity. My passion coincided with the appearance of great works in the Thoroughbred industry that evaluated which pedigree patterns were producing winners. Because I understood genetics work the same in every equine, I applied the Thoroughbred industry's findings to my own program, which resulted in immediate improvements in my foals.

Book excerpt: This is the first history of sport in Ireland, locating the history of sport within Irish political, social, and cultural history, and within the global history of sport. Sport and Ireland demonstrates that there are aspects of Ireland's sporting history that are uniquely Irish and are defined by the peculiarities of life on a small island on the edge of Europe. What is equally apparent, though, is that the Irish sporting world is unique only in part; much of the history of Irish sport is a shared history with that of other societies. Drawing on an unparalleled range of sources - government archives, sporting institutions, private collections, and more than sixty local, national, and international newspapers - this volume offers a unique insight into the history of the British Empire in Ireland and examines the impact that political partition has had on the organization of sport there. Paul Rouse assesses the relationship between sport and national identity, how sport influences policy-making in modern states, and the ways in which sport has been colonized by the media and has colonized it in turn. Each chapter of Sport and Ireland contains new research on the place of sport in Irish life: the playing of hurling matches in London in the eighteenth century, the growth of cricket to become the most important sport in early Victorian Ireland, and the enlistment of thousands of members of the Gaelic Athletic Association as soldiers in the British Army during the Great War. Rouse draws out the significance of animals to the Irish sporting tradition, from the role of horse and dogs in racing and hunting, to the cocks, bulls, and bears that were involved in fighting and baiting.

Book excerpt: SPOKEN IN WHISPERS is the autobiography of a remarkable woman. Nicci Mackay is a horse whisperer, one of only a few people in the world who can calm agitated horses or revive their broken spirits by translating what they say.Nicci, who has had the extraordinary gift of being able to communicate with animals since childhood, tells her story with honesty and humou r.She writes about a life dedicated to animals-from her years spent as groom and jockey in a racing yard, when she operated in secret, to more recent times, after the media discovered her amazing abilities. She now spends her time travelling extensively, translating and interperating on behalf of animals for their owners. Nicci gives the reader a rare and facinating insight into the minds, emotions and bewildering behaviour of our four-legged friends, from thoroughbred stallions to sheepdogs, opening the door to their world through often hilarious, sometime poignant, but always thought-provoking adventures and encounters with the animals she has met throughout her life. As well as horses, Nicci has worked with a variety of domestic pets, farm animals and birds. This will delight all those who share her love of animals.

Book excerpt: Laila Piedra doesn’t drink, doesn’t smoke, and definitely doesn’t sneak into the 21-and-over clubs on the Lower East Side. The only sort of risk Laila enjoys is the peril she writes for the characters in her stories: epic sci-fi worlds full of quests, forbidden love, and robots. Her creative writing teacher has always told her she has a special talent. But three months before graduation, Laila’s number one fan is replaced by Nadiya Nazarenko, a Pulitzer Prize–winning novelist who sees nothing at all special about Laila’s writing. A growing obsession with gaining Nazarenko’s approval—and fixing her first-ever failing grade—leads to a series of unexpected adventures. Soon Laila is discovering the psychedelic highs and perilous lows of nightlife, and the beauty of temporary flings and ambiguity. But with her sanity and happiness on the line, Laila must figure out if enduring the unendurable really is the only way to greatness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is not another "how to ride" book, its purpose is to help parents and riders who are new to the world of equestrian sports or those changing from one type of competition to another. The major disciplines are covered in four separate chapters: hacking/showing, dressage, showjumping and eventing. Each chapter begins with a brief introduction to the discipline showing how it originated and its current status. A detailed description of the discipline follows including types and classes of horses, types and levels of competition, who runs the competitions, which rules apply and how the competition is judged. At the end of each chapter is a section on the "ground rules" which is really a distillation of the author's own experience which takes the mystery and worry out of the whole experience. It covers topics such as how to find out what competitions are taking place and how to enter, which dressage tests apply, what to wear, what to do when you arrive, where best to park, where you can and cannot warm up, checking your gear and reporting to the judge. The appendices at the end of the book contain illustrations of arenas and the different types of bits and saddles, website links and examples of competition programs.

Book excerpt: In the summer of 2018 fiddle player and adventurer Cathleen Leonard embarked on her second major long distance journey on horseback. This time Cathleen was accompanied by her partner, Vlad - who had never ridden a horse before - along with her faithful wolfdog, Spirit, her rescued French draught horse, Oisín, and her nervous, inexperienced young horse, Dakota, who had an irrational fear of drains and people. The unlikely fellowship set off from Cornwall, travelled through the South West of England and across South Wales, then crossed the sea to Ireland where they rode from Mizen to Malin. Half way across Ireland they were joined by a small but opinionated one-eyed mule, who added even more colour to the adventure. Irish history, mythology, and music are woven into Cathleen's account of spontaneous travel and the kindness of strangers. The open hospitality of the people they meet, and the beauty of the landscapes they travel through trump the myriad and often hilarious setbacks encountered along the way.
