Book excerpt: Although largely regarded as a failure, the Irish Convention of 1917, might, had it been successful, have resulted in a totally different Ireland to the one which has emerged. It was an attempt to solve the apparently intractable Irish Question. This book, originally published in 1970, describes the debates which took place. These debates provide an anthology of Irish political thinking, and the committee proceedings offer interesting examples of negotiating techniques, Lloyd George intervening with consummate skill. The author concludes that the Convention may be dismissed as a failure, but that its work formed a stage in the evolution of the Irish settlement of the early 1920s.

Book Synopsis John Redmond and Irish Unity, 1912-1918 by : Joseph P. Finnan
Download or read book John Redmond and Irish Unity, 1912-1918 written by Joseph P. Finnan and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2004-04-01 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his treatment of Redmond, Joseph P. Finnan demonstrates the multiple identities of the Irish Parliamentary Party as nationalist, liberal, and Catholic. He looks at Home Rule as part of a federal solution to the Irish question within the United Kingdom, the reasons for the failure of Redmond's war policies, and the collapse of the Irish Parliamentary Party as part of the wider phenomenon of the decline of liberalism during the Great War. As he looks at Irish nationalism in its worldwide context, Finnan also shows how Redmond's handling of organizational problems in America sets the pattern for his later handling of similar problems in Ireland.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Irish Convention Capt. W. J. M. A. Maloney, a native of Ireland, who served for more than two years as a surgeon in the British Royal Army Medical Corps, wrote the first article in this pamphlet at the request of the Evening Post for the purpose of evoking discussion. Dr. Maloney saw service at the battle of the Marne and at the Gallipoli Peninsula, where he was wounded four times and invalided home. The Evening Post (established in 1801) is by almost universal consent regarded as the ablest and most scholarly of American dailies. Throughout the war it has been intensely pro-ally and many of its readers have felt that in the long struggle between England and Ireland the Post has been pronouncedly pro-english. This symposium has been initiated and conducted through out by the Post itself as a means of sounding the opinion of Americans of Irish blood.(may 24, 1917) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
