Book excerpt: Excerpt from Irish Amy In the course of a somewhat extended acquaintance with the lives, habits and sufferings of street-children - those who go about begging cold victuals, collecting fire-wood and gathering rags - the author's attention has been earnestly directed to finding some way of benefiting these wretched little sufferers. They are born in the most miserable haunts of vice and poverty; and made the slaves of their idle and worthless parents, who, for the most part, live at home in perfect indolence, subsisting on the fruits of their children's begging expeditions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Orange and Green: A Tale of the Boyne and Limerick My Dear Lads: The subject of Ireland is one which has for some years been a very prominent one, and is likely, I fear, for some time yet to occupy a large share of public attention. For many years the laws in Ireland and the rights of Irishmen have been identical with those which we enjoy in England. The discontent manifested in the troubles of recent years has had its root in an older sense of grievance, for which there was, unhappily, only too abundant reason. The great proportion of the soil of Ireland was taken from the original owners and handed over to Cromwell's followers, and for years the land that still remained in the hands of Irishmen was subject to the covetousness of a party of greedy intriguers, who had sufficient influence to sway the proceedings of government. The result was the rising of Ireland, nominally in defense of the rights of King James, but really an effort of despair on the part of those who deemed their religion, their property, and even their lives threatened by this absolute ascendency of the Protestant party in the government of the country. I have drawn my information from a variety of sources; but as I wished you to see the matter from the Irish point of view I have drawn most largely from the history of those events by Mr. O'Driscol, published sixty years ago. There is, however, but little difference of opinion between Irish and English authors as to the general course of the war, or as to the atrocious conduct of William's army of foreign mercenaries toward the people of Ireland. With his grim face and white hair he looked the last man in the world to go a-gipsying. Afterwards I came to know Peter, and spent many evenings with him in the little house where he lives with an Old housekeeper Of singular ugliness and a turbulent small boy known as Patrick Flannery. I found him absurdly simple, a man knowing nothing Of the world and troubling himself little about anything beyond the borders Of Moher but though he is so unpret-ending he has deep respect for his dignity as a parish-priest. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fair Irish Maid Slowly, steadily, surely, the gloom deepened. It could not be said to darken, because it was so steadily white, but the blackest night that ever brooded over a sleeping world could not have been more triumphant in its obliteration of the things that mean life to the living. Here was one of Na ture's conquests, one of her assertions of her final supremacy over the pride and the desire of man. In the awe of its quietude, in the hush Of its cer tainty, it seemed to envelop and control the earth with the finality of the Dusk of Gods. Surely it would seem that when that veil lifted, if ever it did lift, it would reveal nothing better than a world re turned to the tragedy of the arctic past. Kingdoms and civilizations, imperial cities, and thrifty villages must surely be reduced, one and all, to a little glacial dust; nothing remaining of all the pomp and luxury and ardor and hot blood but a frozen sea shuddering against a frozen land, the sea and the land alike no more than the cemetery of the ages, the grave of the tale of man. The mist was the most ruthless of conquerors. It seemed to annihilate the body, it seemed to dissi pate the soul. Its chill impenetrability was more triumphant than any swords that could Slay the flesh, than any words that could kill the mind.
