Book excerpt: Vicar—Vic—Farbstein, seventeen, resident of Eugene, Oregon, an average high school student in every way, happens upon an alien who has come to Earth in search of warriors to defend her world. With a long, unpronounceable name, he calls her Iris, with her blessing. Iris has abilities—flight and strength—and soon, the NSA discovers what she can do. Led by Agent Randolph Haynes, he urges her to keep a low profile and blend in. Blending in, though, isn’t something Iris can so readily do, as the destroyer of her world, Kherter, a fearsome giant of a man, sends his forces to Earth to destroy her as well as enslave mankind. Iris manages—barely—to beat them back the first time, and in doing so, reveals herself to the world. Vic accepts her as a friend, and so do many others at first. The press dubs her Iris Incredible, and she’s hailed as a savior, a mantle she is unwilling to assume. Her only goal is to find someone who can help her in her own cause. When Kherter and his forces return to ravage downtown Eugene and subsequently threaten the world, human nature takes over. Trust turns to mistrust and fear, and Iris becomes a pariah, as does Vic. Soon, social order breaks down as the worst of human nature comes to the fore. In spite of the public’s antipathy, Vic and Iris take on Kherter’s forces in one, final, all-out assault. Iris knows what she has to do, as does Vic, and they engage in a battle that will determine the future of mankind.

Book excerpt: Iris Grace is a beautiful little girl who, from a very young age, barely communicated, avoided social interaction with other people, and rarely smiled. From both before her diagnosis of autism and after, she seemed trapped in her own world, unable to connect with those around her. One day, her mother brought home a Maine Coon kitten for Iris, even though cats aren’t typically thought of as therapy pets. Thula, named after one of Iris’s favorite African lullabies and meaning “peace” in Zulu, immediately bonded with Iris. Thula knew right away how to assuage Iris when she became overstimulated; when to intervene when Iris became overwhelmed; and how to provide distraction when Iris started heading toward a meltdown. Whether exploring, playing, sleeping, or taking a bath with Iris or accompanying the family on a bike ride, Thula became so much more than a therapy cat. With Thula’s safe companionship, Iris began to talk and interact with her family. This heartwarming story is illustrated with sixty of Iris’s gorgeous impressionistic paintings, works of art that have allowed her to express herself since the age of three. A gifted artist, Iris sees the natural world in a profoundly vivid and visceral way. With Thula by her side, she’ll sit and paint for hours, and the results are stunning. Inspiring and touching, Iris Grace follows the struggles and triumphs of a family—and a miracle cat—as they learn to connect with an amazing child.

Book excerpt: “When we believe the Bible as it is, we will see the power of God move in our lives and in our community as it did centuries ago in Bible times.” -Mel Tari Translated into dozens of languages, with millions of copies sold, Like a Mighty Wind remains a beloved classic from global evangelist Mel Tari. Recounting the incredible story of revival on the island of Timor during 1965 in the midst of political turmoil, the book is an amazing testament to the power of faith and the reality of God's power to work miracles in modern times. The Spirit of God that swept across the island “like a mighty wind” continues today throughout Indonesia although persecution of Christians is all too common. The story of God's powerful revival in this region remains a testament to the truth of God's Word, and serves as a reminder to all believers that the Spirit of God manifests in our world now as it did in the earliest days of the Church.

Book excerpt: A fascinating guide to using the iris to discover the encoded secrets of the body and mind Is it really possible to see our hidden nature in our irises? Have the hereditary patterns of our ancestors left their genetic markers buried deep within the fibres of the iris, waiting to reveal themselves at key moments in our lifetime? In his latest book, renowned expert in behavioural iridology Andrew Mason fuses the practice of behavioural and physical iridology into one highly effective model. The eyes are generally our first contact point with another, and in that instant, we start to feel what another person might be like. With just a look, it is possible to convey despair, rage, hatred, pity, affection and happiness, and all that from a fleeting glance! This book provides a unique insight into the secret depths of the iris. Behavioural Iridology will be an essential guide for those interested in the practical application of both schools of iridology.

"This is not reverent, definitive history. This is a tactician’s bible." --Parul Sehgal, The New York Times Twenty years in the making, Sarah Schulman's Let the Record Show is the most comprehensive political history ever assembled of ACT UP and American AIDS activism In just six years, ACT UP, New York, a broad and unlikely coalition of activists from all races, genders, sexualities, and backgrounds, changed the world. Armed with rancor, desperation, intelligence, and creativity, it took on the AIDS crisis with an indefatigable, ingenious, and multifaceted attack on the corporations, institutions, governments, and individuals who stood in the way of AIDS treatment for all. They stormed the FDA and NIH in Washington, DC, and started needle exchange programs in New York; they took over Grand Central Terminal and fought to change the legal definition of AIDS to include women; they transformed the American insurance industry, weaponized art and advertising to push their agenda, and battled—and beat—The New York Times, the Catholic Church, and the pharmaceutical industry. Their activism, in its complex and intersectional power, transformed the lives of people with AIDS and the bigoted society that had abandoned them. Based on more than two hundred interviews with ACT UP members and rich with lessons for today’s activists, Let the Record Show is a revelatory exploration—and long-overdue reassessment—of the coalition’s inner workings, conflicts, achievements, and ultimate fracture. Schulman, one of the most revered queer writers and thinkers of her generation, explores the how and the why, examining, with her characteristic rigor and bite, how a group of desperate outcasts changed America forever, and in the process created a livable future for generations of people across the world.

Book excerpt: I’d spent my life watching everything happen around me. But never actually living it. Sheltered. Naïve. Shy. The top three adjectives to describe me. Well, that and awkward. Until Brent. From the first moment, I’d met him, my filter had disappeared. The things that passed through my lips when I was with him were the thoughts that passed through my mind, but also the things I’d never dreamed of saying aloud. But he seemed to like them, and I couldn’t stop. Not when he was also gentle, kind, and protective. As well as the most beautiful man I’d ever laid eyes on. A total winning package, and one who was into me. But I was me. More comfortable on the edges, better at observing rather than living. I’d pushed my boundaries just once, had really gone for what life was offering me, and that had ended about as well as an elephant trying to parachute with a tissue. Horribly. It had ended horribly. So I wasn’t going to be ready to try again. Not ever. Even if Brent made a very convincing argument to just suck it up and go for it.

Meeting her is another, and running from the law, well, that’s a different story altogether. Serving truth and justice and whatever else comes with it, Nelson does his best to help Mara fit in. However, as with all things, agendas rule, and he discovers that the Agency isn’t what it seems and its goals under its leader, Colton Samel, differ wildly from its stated purpose. By the time Nelson and Mara discover the truth, it may already be too late.

Book excerpt: This book offers a critical investigation of the exclusion of individuals described as having ‘learning difficulties’ from participation in higher education. Using a postmodernist framework, the author explores the insights and experiences of a theatre group attempting to develop an undergraduate degree programme in the performing arts. In doing so, he provides a theoretical map of insights into discourses of power and knowledge, and makes transparent competing and contradictory discursive practices. Suggesting that ‘learning difficulties’ is a constructed and re-constructed discourse serving normative interests, the author demonstrates that despite the rhetoric of widening participation, individuals are intentionally beset by barriers, silenced and excluded from degree level participation. The author calls for a radical re-think of the notion of ‘learning difficulties’, segregated provision, access to employment in theatre, and critically questions the notion of participation in higher education. This pioneering volume will appeal to students and scholars of inclusive education, (critical) disability studies, cultural studies and the sociology of education.

Book excerpt: A middle-aged wedding planner. An ancient enemy. And a whole lot of plants. I never intended to kill. That’s the thing about a midlife crisis—intention matters. To be clear, I was a well-known murderer of houseplants from the start. As a boutique wedding planner with a black thumb, I’ll get you that fabulous dress–just don’t ask me to pick out the bouquets. But when the bottom fell out of that life—losing my job, my apartment, and my only son to grad school all in the same week—my world came crashing down. Then a letter from a family lawyer changed everything. I packed up decades worth of memories and headed for Whiskey Row. But instead of my dream boutique, I walked into a nightmare. As I attempt to tame the veritable jungle and evade enemies unseen for millenia, I’ve learned that midlife brings some unexpected magic. Yet nothing could prepare me for witches, shifters, and fae in my shop at all hours–and those are just the customers. If you love character-driven adventure, houseplants, and a little spice with your urban fantasy, this page-turner is for you. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and then you’ll head out to buy your own Monstera deliciosa. A Circle of Stars, the first book in the Four Crowns series is a grownup romp that celebrates friendship and snark with a hint of slow-burn romance as the heroine shows that midlife is a starting point, never the end. Perfect for fans of K.F. Breene, Travis Baldree, and Delemhach.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first full-length biography of a brilliant, self-taught inventor whose innovations in information and energy technology continue to shape our world. The Economist called Stanford R. Ovshinsky (1922–2012) “the Edison of our age,” but this apt comparison doesn't capture the full range of his achievements. As an independent, self-educated inventor, Ovshinsky not only created many important devices but also made fundamental discoveries in materials science. This book offers the first full-length biography of a visionary whose energy and information innovations continue to fuel our post-industrial economy. In The Man Who Saw Tomorrow, Lillian Hoddeson and Peter Garrett tell the story of an unconventional genius with no formal education beyond high school who invented, among other things, the rechargeable nickel metal hydride batteries that have powered everything from portable electronics to hybrid cars, a system for mass-producing affordable thin-film solar panels, and rewritable CDs and DVDs. His most important discovery, the Ovshinsky effect, led to a paradigm shift in condensed matter physics and yielded phase-change memory, which is now enabling new advances in microelectronics. A son of the working class who began as a machinist and toolmaker, Ovshinsky focused his work on finding solutions to urgent social problems, and to pursue those goals, he founded Energy Conversion Devices, a unique research and development lab. At the end of his life, battered by personal and professional losses, Ovshinsky nevertheless kept working to combat global warming by making solar energy “cheaper than coal”—another of his many visions of a better tomorrow.
