Book excerpt: Rather than reading the Catholic Epistles in isolation from each other - understanding their individual historical situations as the single, determinative context for their interpretation - this study argues that a proper understanding of these seven letters must equally attend to their collection and placement within the New Testament canon. Resisting the judgment of much of historical-critical analysis of the New Testament, namely that the concept of canon actually obscures the meaning of these texts, it is the canonical process by which the texts were composed, redacted, collected, arranged, and fixed in a final canonical form that constitutes a necessary interpretive context for these seven letters. This study argues that through reception history and paratextual and compositional evidence one can discern a collection consciousness within the Catholic Epistles such that they should be read and interpreted as an intentional, discrete canonical sub-collection set within the New Testament. Furthermore, the work argues that such collection consciousness, though not necessarily in the preview of the original authors (being perhaps unforeseen, yet not unintended), is neither anachronistic to the meaning of the letters nor antagonistic to their composition.

In recent years, particularly with the work of Raymond Brown, attention has been focused on the internal schism within the Johannine (or Beloved Disciple's) community, thus taking the first epistle as a corrective to secessionists' misguided attempts to read the Gospel of John in an "advanced," spiritualizing manner. Birger Olsson returns to a less common perspective, one that views the crisis facing the Elder as a wholly "intra-Jewish" problem. The Johannine community comprised Jewish believers who regarded Jesus as the long-promised Messiah of Israel, but at some point in the community's life, under the leadership of one Diotrephes, some members of the community chose to reject this conviction and to entice other members to do likewise. Olsson anchors his thoroughgoing interpretation of the three letters in this conflict among Jewish Christians over the nature of the Messiah and the renewal of Israel's ancient covenant. Among other things, this implies that the letters were written in reverse order of their numbering.

That is the interpretative question pursued in many of these essays that supplement the collection done in 2012 for Wipf and Stock. Taking a cue from Aratos and Vergil, among others, these studies point to configurations of letters that reference some aspect of the topic dealt with in already integral words in the main text. Attention to letters sprinkled throughout a passage may uncover integral words on their own "but the beholder wanting." Through this lens, one may trace the formative influence of the letters Yhwh on Isaiah and Matthew, hear more echoes of Homer and Pindar in Mark, observe extensive engagement with Aratos in Luke-Acts, and the descriptor "beloved" used of Judas in John. Through this lens, one may detect that Matthew and Luke focused on the Pentateuch as a whole when they supplement Mark. The intercalated letters of the Gospel writers' names in the Farewell Discourse of John also suggest that he self-consciously works within the lineup that we now know. This reading strategy is an art as much as a science, but, when used responsibly, it opens a new question within traditional redactional investigations.
