The book offers an insight into the daily lives and living conditions of local people and gives the reader glimpses and details of familiar places during this century of unprecedented change. Many aspects of Ipswich's recent history are covered, famous occasions and individuals are remembered and the impact of national and international events is witnessed. The book provides a striking account of the changes that have so altered Ipswich's appearance and records the process of transformation. Drawing on detailed local knowledge of the community, and illustrated with a wealth of black-and-white photographs, this book recalls what Ipswich has lost in terms of buildings, traditions and ways of life. It also acknowledges the regeneration that has taken place and celebrates the character and energy of local people as they move through the first years of this new century.

Book excerpt: One of the first things you will notice about the City of Ipswich is its Queenslander houses and heritage buildings built in the eighteen hundreds, scattered throughout the city, still standing as great architectural statements of that period. The central business district of Ipswich was also once graced with many grand old building, some still stand to his very day, however through the 1980's many of these buildings were lost forever, either by the push of a bulldozer for redevelopment and modernisation or raging fires that broke out in the middle of the night. With the modernisation of the central business district completed, people stopped patronising the businesses in the top end of town and the outlook for the area was grim. The area was fast become neglected from lack of investment, and it wasn't long before there was a push to modernise that area as well. This book covers the transformation of the Top Of Town Ipswich during the 1990's, where the vision of a few people who saw the historical significance of the area, rallied to save the unique and diverse architecture in the heritage precinct from the bulldozers. This is my story of that period, when some small people and some great people, by working together as a team, saved the Top of Town, Ipswich.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illustrations of Old Ipswich: With Architectural Description of Each Subject and Such Historical Notices as Illustrate the Manners and Customs of Previous Ages in the Old Borough, Helping to Form Unpublished Chapters in Its History The Volume owes its origin in this way. The Author having for many years been a collector of the drawings of George Frost, and others, of buildings in Ipswich in times gone by, was urged by friends, whose regard for the sketches was as warm as his own, and who thought the time was come for an illustrated work on Ipswich, to publish Copies of the drawings he had in his possession, and thus bring before the present generation the Ipswich of their forefathers. The Author resolved to risk the outlay, and has the satisfaction of knowing that such journals as The Times, The Daily News, The Athenaeum, The Building News. Book excerpt: This guide to the designs, technologies and materials that really make green buildings work will help architects, specifiers and clients make informed choices, based on reliable technical information. Low Impact Building: Housing using Renewable Materials is about changing the way we build houses to reduce their ‘carbon’ footprint and to minimise environmental damage. One of the ways this can be done is by reducing the energy and environmental impact of the materials and resources used to construct buildings by choosing alternative products and systems. In particular, we need to recognise the potential for using natural and renewable construction materials as a way to reduce both carbon emissions but also build in a more benign and healthy way. This book is an account of some attempts to introduce this into mainstream house construction and the problems and obstacles that need to be overcome to gain wider acceptance of genuinely environmental construction methods. The book explores the nature of renewable materials in depth: where do they come from, what are they made of and how do they get into the construction supply chain? The difference between artisan and self-build materials like earth and straw, and more highly processed and manufactured products such as wood fibre insulation boards is explored. The author then gives an account of the Renewable House Programme in the UK explaining how it came about and how it was funded and managed by Government agencies. He analyses 12 case studies of projects from the Programme, setting out the design and methods of construction, buildability, environmental assessment tools used in the design, performance in terms of energy, air tightness, carbon footprint and post-occupancy issues. The policy context of energy and sustainability in the UK, Europe and the rest of the world is subjected to a critical examination to show how this affects the use of natural and renewable materials in the market for insulation and other construction materials. The debate over energy usage and embodied energy is discussed, as this is central to the reason why even many environmentally progressive people ignore the case for natural and renewable materials. The book offers a discussion of building physics and science, considering energy performance, moisture, durability, health and similar issues. A critical evaluation of assessment, accreditation and labelling of materials and green buildings is central to this as well as a review of some of the key research in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An "anatomical" study of building systems integration with guidelines for practical applications Through a systems approach to buildings, Integrated Buildings: The Systems Basis of Architecture details the practice of integration to bridge the gap between the design intentions and technical demands of building projects. Analytic methods are introduced that illustrate the value, benefit, and application of systems integration, as well as guidelines for selecting technical systems in the conceptual, schematic, and design development stages of projects. Landmark structures such as Eero Saarinen's John Deere Headquarters, Renzo Piano's Kansai International Airport, Glenn Murcutt's Magney House, and Richard Rogers's Lloyd's of London headquarters are presented as part of an extensive collection of case studies organized into seven categories: Laboratories Offices Pavilions Green Architecture High Tech Architecture Airport Terminals Residential Architecture Advanced material is provided on methods of integration, including an overview of integration topics, the systems basis of architecture, and the integration potential of various building systems. An expanded case study of Ibsen Nelsen's design for the Pacific Museum of Flight is used to demonstrate case study methods for tracing integration through any work of architecture. Visually enhanced with more than 300 illustrations, diagrams, and photographs, Integrated Buildings: The Systems Basis of Architecture is a valuable reference guide for architecture and civil engineering students, as well as architects, engineers, and other professionals in the construction industry.
