Book Synopsis A New History of Iowa by : Jeff Bremer
Download or read book A New History of Iowa written by Jeff Bremer and published by University Press of Kansas. This book was released on 2023-10-06 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The state of Iowa is largely unappreciated and often misunderstood. It has a small population and sits in the middle of a huge country. It’s thought of as an uninspiring place full of farms and fields of corn. But Iowa represents America as surely as New York and California, and Iowa’s history is more dynamic, complicated, and influential than commonly imagined. Jeff Bremer’s A New History of Iowa offers the most comprehensive history of the Hawkeye State ever written, surveying Iowa from the last ice age through the COVID-19 pandemic. It tells a new and vibrant story, examining the state’s small-town culture, politics, social and economic development, and its many diverse inhabitants. Bremer features well-known individuals, such as Sauk leader Black Hawk, artist Grant Wood, botanist George Washington Carver, suffragist Carrie Chapman Catt, and President Herbert Hoover. But Bremer broadens the state’s story by including new voices—among them, runaway enslaved men who joined Iowa’s 60th Colored Regiment in the Civil War, young female pearl button factory workers, Latino railroad workers who migrated to the state in the early twentieth century, and recent refugees from Southeast Asia and the Balkans. This new story of Iowa provides a brisk, readable narrative written for a broad audience, from high school and college students to teachers and scholars to general readers. It tells the story of ordinary and extraordinary people of all backgrounds and greatly improves our knowledge of a state whose history has been neglected. A New History of Iowa is for everyone who wants to learn about Iowa’s surprising, complex, and remarkable past.

Book excerpt: Caring for America is the definitive history of care work and its surprisingly central role in the American labor movement and class politics from the New Deal to the present. Authors Eileen Boris and Jennifer Klein create a narrative of the home care industry that interweaves four histories--the evolution of the modern American welfare state; the rise of the service sector-based labor movement; the persistence of race, class, and gender-based inequality; and the aging of the American population--and considers their impact on today's most dynamic social movements.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Blue Book of Iowa Women: A History of Contemporary Women The labor involved in collecting and compiling this history has been far beyond our expectation, yet if we have added to the written history of our state, or if the lives herein recorded prove an inspiration to others, it will be compensation for all the labor it has cost. In compiling this history of Iowa women, the first to be published in the state, we have been aided by many prominent women, by the Historical Dept. Of Iowa and by the State Historical Society. We here give grateful acknowledgment of that aid. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis Legal and Political Status of Women in Iowa by : Ruth A. Gallaher
Download or read book Legal and Political Status of Women in Iowa written by Ruth A. Gallaher and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Legal and Political Status of Women in Iowa: An Historical Account of the Rights of Women IN the preparation of this monograph the writer has attempted to present a general survey of the status of women in Iowa by pointing out the distinctions between men and women which have been established by law or sanctioned by judicial rulings. The status of women With reference to activities which are not regulated either directly or indirectly by the government is outside the scope of this monograph and is not discussed in these pages. Thus the position of women in religious and other similar organizations has not been considered since this does not concern their status as citizens. Furthermore, all laws of a general nature applying equally to men and women have received only incidental mention, although such laws are often of vital importance to women. In this class belong the laws concerning public utilities, protection of life and property, public health, and municipal administration. Unless otherwise specified or plainly inapplicable to both sexes, Iowa statute laws governing civil rights and obligations may be assumed to apply equally to men and women. Laws concerning political matters, on the contrary, refer to male citizens only unless women are specifically included. In some cases it has seemed advisable to include a brief discussion of certain aspects of the status of women which show little or no legal discrimination against women. Thus the admission of women to the public schools, to institutions of higher education, and to the professions has been discussed, although the Iowa laws show but little difference between men and women in such matters. There are two reasons for including these subjects: first, because such privileges are largely furnished at the expense of the State; and secondly, be cause the equality which has prevailed in Iowa is by no means general throughout the United States and ought not to be taken for granted. Teaching has been included for the same reasons, and also because the teacher in State supported schools is in one sense a public official. Book Synopsis Susan Angeline Collins: with a Hallelujah Heart by : Janis Bennington Van Buren
Download or read book Susan Angeline Collins: with a Hallelujah Heart written by Janis Bennington Van Buren and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2021-04-27 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ten percent of book profits will go to the Susan Angeline Collins Scholarship at Upper Iowa University in Fayette, Iowa. Get ready to delve into a world of hardship, challenge, and fulfillment. Explore the life of African American Susan Angeline Collins and be inspired by her faith, pioneering attitude, missionary successes, unfailing courage, and belief in everyone’s right to an education. As Miss Collins’ life unfolds before you, relevant social issues affecting people of color are intertwined. Issues examined include economics, education, gender, race, religion, and Africa’s colonization from her 1851 birth in Illinois until her 1940 death in Iowa. Her resourcefulness in overcoming obstacles during her 33-year commitment to missionary service in the Congo Delta Region and Angola is compelling. Miss Collins’ story demonstrates the difference one person can make in the lives of an unknown number of women and children, some orphaned and homeless and others escaping early marriage and subservience. Her leadership is evidenced when starting a girls’ school in the northern Angolan high plateau region years before Mary Jane McLeod Bethune initiated her school for African-American girls in Florida. You will be gratified to discover how this diminutive bundle of energy achieved recognition as a stalwart missionary, leader, teacher, nurse, construction manager, and surrogate mother to “her girls.”
