They shifted between confrontation and conciliation, ratcheting up tension yet also embarking on peace initiatives. Tao Wang offers a new account of Sino–American relations in the mid-1950s that situates the two great powers in their international context. He reveals how both the United States and China adopted a policy of attempting to isolate their adversary and explores how Chinese and American leaders perceived and reacted to each other’s strategies. Although the policy of the Eisenhower administration was to contain China, Washington often overestimated Chinese aggressiveness, worrying allies and neutral states. Sensitive to the differences within the Western camp, Chinese leaders sought to convince American allies to persuade the United States to back down. Wang analyzes diplomatic maneuvering over a peace settlement in Indochina, an American defense pact with Taiwan, and the anticolonial Bandung Conference, showing how political pressure pushed American leaders to make concessions. He challenges the portrayal of Communist states as driven by ideology, showing that Chinese leaders adopted a pragmatic policy during these crucial years. Book excerpt: The Iowa state preserves system was created in 1965; a decade later, thirty preserves had been dedicated, including “six native prairies, a native White Pine stand, the state's only Sphagnum bog, a Balsam Fir stand, some of the oldest exposed rock outcrops in the world, an ancient fort, a fen, several Indian mound groups and a historical cemetery.” This new guide to all ninety Iowa state preserves—biological, geological, archaeological, historical, and scenic—describes the state's most treasured prairies and forests, quartzite outcrops and ice caves, and Indian mounds and wetlands as well as such historic sites as Fort Atkinson and Montauk. Each entry includes two-color, progressively scaled maps giving the location of the preserve within the state, within its county, relative to a nearby town (with a recommended driving route), and on the local landscape (using USGS 7.5-minute topo maps). Though he is often known as "the gentle sculptor," Petersen gave much attention to the subject of warfare. To some extent, his entire life might be said to be based on a reaction to war since it was avoidance of the German military that prompted his family to emigrate from Denmark in 1893. Petersen lived through World War I, and sculpture on this theme constituted some of his earliest and most successful commissions. When World War II erupted, Petersen had been sculptor-in-residence at Iowa State for seven years, and its effect on college-age students was something he felt strongly. His work of the war years expresses the sacrifice and tragedy of the global fight. The theme continued to be important in the post-war years when he designed a number of proposals for war memorials, all of which focused not on victory, but on the sorrow and loss of war. By the late 1940s, his strong sentiments began to combine with his religious life after he joined the Catholic Church. Marquart was born into a family of land-loving people-farmers known as the ethnic group Germans-from-Russia-who had emigrated from Russia to the United States between 1886 and 1911 and taken up land claims in Dakota Territory. Her grandparents tended their farms and fields, never dreaming of moving another inch away from the homes they had made.
