Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thesis describes measurements of the scrape-off layer (SOL) ion temperature Ti - an important but yet rarely measured parameter - with a retarding field analyzer (RFA) probe in the limiter tokamak Tore Supra. The thesis is organized in four chapters. In the first chapter, some well known facts about nuclear fusion, limiter SOL, Langmuir probes, etc. are briefly recalled. Various diagnostics for SOL Ti measurements developed in the past are addressed as well. The second chapter is dedicated to the RFA. The principle of the RFA, technical details and operation of the Tore Supra RFA, and the influence of instrumental effects on RFA measurements are addressed. It is concluded that the influence of instrumental effects on RFA Ti measurements is relatively small. In the third chapter, the systematic measurements of Ti (as well as other parameters) in the Tore Supra SOL are presented. It is shown that Ti / Te >1 (with Te being the electron temperature) in the SOL but also in the confined plasma, and increases with radius. Also important result is that while SOL Ti changes significantly, following the core properties rather closely, SOL Te hardly changes at all. In the final chapter the present status of three ongoing projects aimed at the independent validation of SOL Ti measurements in Tore Supra is presented: the development of the segmented tunnel probe for fast SOL Ti measurements, the measurement of edge ion temperature in Joint European Torus (JET) tokamak, and the comparison of RFA with charge exchange recombination spectroscopy in Tore Supra.

Book Synopsis Experimental Study of the Edge Plasma of the Tore Supra Tokamak by : Martin Kubic
Download or read book Experimental Study of the Edge Plasma of the Tore Supra Tokamak written by Martin Kubic and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-01 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of edge plasma physics in tokamaks has developed rapidly in recent years and is now considered as one of the major research areas of magnetic fusion. Edge probe techniques are a necessary experimental contribution to such studies, providing information about the plasma flux to the walls of the reactor. The experiments that were carried out on the Tore Supra tokamak to investigate the scrape-off layer conditions in presence of multiple discrete limiters are presented. The baseline of the scenario is to limit the discharge on discrete limiters on the low field side of the tokamak chamber, increasing the minor radius while the safety factor is kept at a constant value 4.8. Analytical tools for 3D magnetic connection analysis and magnetic field mapping together with a new method for LCFS evaluation are also presented."

Book excerpt: The tokamak is the principal tool in controlled fusion research. This book acts as an introduction to the subject and a basic reference for theory, definitions, equations, and experimental results. The fourth edition has been completely revised, describing their development of tokamaks to the point of producing significant fusion power.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In these proceedings of the April 2005 conference participants describe their current research in the theories, computations, and applications of radio frequency power in plasmas for fusion, space propulsion and material processing. Many of the papers describe solutions in tokamak geometries where phenomena to be modeled ranged from mm to tens of centimeters and self-consistent models of energetic particles and waves, with about half the papers describing work in ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF). Other topics include lower hybrid ranges of frequencies, electron Bernstein ranges of frequencies, electron cyclotron ranges of frequencies and RF plasma applications.
