Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Africa welcomes business investment and offers some of the world's highest returns and impacts Africa has tremendous economic potential and offers rewarding opportunities for global businesses looking for new markets and long-term investments with favorable returns. Africa has been one of the world's fastest-growing regions over the past decade, and by 2030 will be home to nearly 1.7 billion people and an estimated $6.7 trillion worth of consumer and business spending. Increased political stability in recent years and improving regional integration are making market access easier, and business expansion will generate jobs for women and youth, who represent the vast majority of the population. Current economic growth and poverty-alleviation efforts mean that more than 43 percent of the continent's people will reach middle- or upper-class status by 2030. Unlocking Africa's Business Potential examines business opportunities in the eight sectors with the highest potential returns on private investment—the same sectors that will foster economic growth and diversification, job creation, and improved general welfare. These sectors include: consumer markets, agriculture and agriprocessing, information and communication technology, manufacturing, oil and gas, tourism, banking, and infrastructure and construction. The book's analysis of these sectors is based on case studies that identify specific opportunities for investment and growth, along with long-term market projections to inform decision-making. The book identifies potential risks to business and offers mitigation strategies. It also provides policymakers with solutions to attract new business investments, including how to remove barriers to business and accelerate development of the private sector.

Book Synopsis Africa's Private Sector by : Vijaya Ramachandran
Download or read book Africa's Private Sector written by Vijaya Ramachandran and published by CGD Books. This book was released on 2009 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is the private sector yet to take off in much sub-Saharan Africa? Drawing on a unique set of enterprise surveys, Vijaya Ramachandran and her co-authors identify the biggest obstacles: inadequate infrastructure (especially unreliable electricity and crumbing roads) and burdensome regulation. They then show how ethnic minorities dominate the private sector in many countries, inhibiting competition and demands for a better business environment, and thus impeding the emergence of an entrepreneurial middle class. Based on this careful diagnosis, the authors suggest investing in infrastructure and reforming regulation to lower the cost of doing business, and increasing the access to education of a broader-based business class that crosses ethnic divides. Book Synopsis Investment and Risk in Africa by : Paul Collier
Download or read book Investment and Risk in Africa written by Paul Collier and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together academics in the fields of economics, political science, and law, with business practitioners in the fields of risk assessment and portfolio management. Their contributions are sequenced to tell a story. Africa is perceived as being a highly risky continent. As a result, investment is discouraged. These risks are partly exaggerated. However, to the extent that they reflect genuine problems, they are capable of being mitigated by insurance and reduced by political restraints such as central banks, investment charters, and international agreements.
Book Synopsis Investment Opportunities and Private Sector Growth in Africa by : Godfrey Mwakikagile
Download or read book Investment Opportunities and Private Sector Growth in Africa written by Godfrey Mwakikagile and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author looks at investment opportunities in Africa from a continental perspective. He also focuses on a number of countries which have some of the best investment opportunities on the continent. The book is a comprehensive survey of African economies, their successes and failures, and looks at all sectors of the economy which have undergone radical transformation since the adoption of free-market policies after the end of the Cold War. African economies are now driven by the private sector but the vast majority of the people have yet to benefit from this economic transformation, the author contends. Also included are profiles of some African Americans who have settled and invested in Africa. One of them is the son of baseball legend and civil rights activist Jackie Robinson who lives in Tanzania. He's one of the most successful farmers in Tanzania. He also got married there and has a family with his Tanzanian wife and applied for citizenship. The author also warns about the dangers of the Second Scramble for Africa spearheaded by multinational corporations and their home governments to exploit the continent's natural resources for their own benefit, and emphasises that there is an imperative need for African countries to protect their interests while they at the same time actively seek foreign investors to help develop their economies. It is an inescapable fact that all countries are inextricably linked in this era of globalisation. The book can also be used in college as a primary or supplementary text in the study of development economics not only in the African context but also for other parts of the Third World. It can also serve as a guide for those who want to invest or live in Africa or simply learn about the economies of African countries covered in this study. But it is also dire warning about the dangers of globalisation which, the author contends, is in many ways a new form of imperialism.

Download or read book Africa's Lions written by Haroon Bhorat and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2016-11-08 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining the economic forces that will shape Africa's future. Africa’s Lions examines the economic growth experiences of six fast growing and/or economically dominant African countries. Expert African researchers offer unique perspectives into the challenges and issues in Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique, Nigeria, and South Africa. Despite a growing body of research on African economies, very little has focused on the relationship between economic growth and employment outcomes at the detailed country level. A lack of empirical data has deprived policymakers of a robust evidence base on which to make informed decisions. By harnessing country-level household, firm, and national accounts data together with existing analytical country research—the authors have attempted to bridge this gap. The growth of the global working-age population to 2030 will be driven primarily by Africa, which means that the relationship between growth and employment should be understood within the context of each country’s projected demographic challenge and the associated implications for employment growth. A better understanding of the structure of each country’s workforce and the resulting implications for human capital development, the vulnerably employed, and the working poor, will be critical to informing the development policy agenda. As a group, the six countries profiled in Africa’s Lions will largely shape the continent's future. Each country chapter focuses on the complex interactions between economic growth and employment outcomes, within the individual Africa’s Lions context.

Book Synopsis Growth in Sub-Saharan Africa by : Mr.Dhaneshwar Ghura
Download or read book Growth in Sub-Saharan Africa written by Mr.Dhaneshwar Ghura and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1995-12-01 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper investigates empirically the determinants of economic growth for a large sample of sub-Saharan African countries during 1981-92. The results indicate that (i) an increase in private investment has a relatively large positive impact on per capita growth; (ii) growth is stimulated by public policies that lower the budget deficit in relation to GDP (without reducing government investment), reduce the rate of inflation, maintain external competitiveness, promote structural reforms, encourage human capital development, and slow population growth; and (iii) convergence of per capita income occurs after controlling for human capital development and public policies.

Book excerpt: In September 2015, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted at the United Nations Development Summit to serve as a 15-year plan of action for all countries and people. The SDGs include 17 specific goals, and 169 associated targets that set out quantitative objectives across the social, economic, and environmental dimensions of sustainable development, all to be achieved by 2030. Health has been recognized as crucial for sustainable human development and an essential contributor to the economic growth of society. Beyond the goal to "ensure healthy lives and promoting well-being for all at all ages," many of the other SDGs include targets that are essential to address the environmental and social determinants of health. Considering this context, the Forum on Publicâ€"Private Partnerships for Global Health and Safety convened a workshop series to examine potential opportunities to engage the private sector and develop partnerships to advance health and the SDGs. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop series.
