Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most investors who fail to reach their goals do so because they fall into identifiable and often predictable mental pitfalls along the way. They already exist in our psyches, and they do their damage before we are aware of their presence. Every investor has weaknesses and vulnerabilities. These make up the darker side of our investor identity. And though some are more at risk than others, these investor traps are universal human tendencies to which every investor is susceptible. Forging a more effective investor identity involves not only recognizing these traps, but also realizing your personal susceptibilities to them and developing the ability to sidestep them along the way to your goals. This chapter describes the most common and insidious investor traps. You will learn to identify and minimize the impact of these common mental mistakes.

Book Synopsis Lessons for the Big Society: Planning, Regeneration and the Politics of Community Participation by : Denis Dillon
Download or read book Lessons for the Big Society: Planning, Regeneration and the Politics of Community Participation written by Denis Dillon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides concrete examples of the ways in which shifting academic debates, policy and political approaches have impacted on a specific place over the past 30 years. It offers a critical analysis of the history, politics and social geography of the high profile London Borough of Haringey, in the decades prior to the 2011 Tottenham riots. The Haringey case study acts as a lens through which to explore the evolution of theoretical and policy debates about the relationship between local institutions and the communities they serve. Focusing on the policy areas of planning and regeneration, it considers the local implementation and outcome of central government strategies that have sought to achieve such accountability and responsiveness through community participation strategies. It examines how the local authority responded to central government aspirations for greater community involvement in planning, in the 1970s, and regeneration, from the late 1980s onwards, before looking in detail at the implementation of New Labour neighbourhood renewal and local governance policy in the borough. In doing so, the book provides a longitudinal case study on how various central government community empowerment agendas have played out at a local level. It offers important lessons and indicates how they might work more effectively in future.

Book Synopsis The Marginal Cost of Public Funds by : Bev Dahlby
Download or read book The Marginal Cost of Public Funds written by Bev Dahlby and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2008-04-25 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unified treatment of the marginal cost of public funds, covering both its theoretical foundations and how the MCF concept can be used to analyze tax policy issues. The marginal cost of public funds (MCF) measures the loss incurred by society in raising additional revenues to finance government spending. The MCF has emerged as one of the most important concepts in public economics; it is a key component in evaluations of tax reforms, public expenditure programs, and other public policies. The Marginal Cost of Public Funds provides a unified treatment of the MCF, carefully developing its theoretical foundations in a variety of contexts and describing its application to a wide range of policies—from excise taxes in Thailand to public sector borrowing in Canada and the United States. The Marginal Cost of Public Funds develops the basic theory of the MCF within the framework of public economics and shows how it is related to the traditional measures of the efficiency loss from distortionary taxation. The MCF concept is then applied to the major sources of revenues for governments—sales and excise taxes, taxes on labor income, taxes on the return to capital, public sector borrowing, and intergovernmental grants. This book will be an essential reference for economists and public policy analysts both in and out of government. Exercises and recommendations for further reading at the end of each main chapter highlight its usefulness as a supplementary text in advanced undergraduate or graduate courses in public economics.
Download or read book Iraq's Burdens written by Abbas Alnasrawi and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2002-11-30 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oil revenue has been an economic curse for Iraq. In the second half of the 20th century the international oil sector shaped Iraq's economy, forcing it to rely too heavily on revenue brought in by oil production and exports. Iraq's failure to use copious oil rents to diversify the economy has proven disastrous for its people and economy. Its over-reliance on oil revenues coupled with the consequences of its war with Iran, the Gulf War, and the ensuing economic sanctions have led the country to economic destruction, sanctions, and enormous debt. Iraq is a major oil producing country, a founding member of OPEC, and possesses the world's second highest amount of oil reserves. Yet few studies exist on Iraq's oil industry and its impact on the economic and political fortunes of the country. Alnasrawi remedies this by helping us understand this important Arab, Middle Eastern, oil-exporting country that has been a constant focus of U.S. foreign policy since 1990. Alnasrawi concludes that the availability of capital is an insufficient condition for economic development, and may in fact retard it, as it did in this now reviled and wrecked country.
