Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Value of Simple: A Practical Guide to Taking the Complexity Out of Investing is a plain-language guide to investing for Canadians. Canada has the highest investment fees in the world, as well as a confusing tax system that features four-letter words like RRSP and TFSA. Fortunately there are low-cost index funds that make it easy and rewarding for you to become a do-it-yourself “couch potato” investor. With a focus on developing good processes to minimize the room for human error and step-by-step instructions, the book will walk you through the elements of managing your finances for the long term: how to devise a savings plan, stick to it through automation, determine how to allocate funds balancing risk and reward, invest using low-cost index funds, track your investments, and deal with the inevitable issue of taxation. Putting your money to work can look suspiciously like math at times, but this book lays out a simple approach that anyone can follow. Inside you will find tools and templates, along with easy suggestions and rules-of-thumb to help prevent analysis paralysis and get you started fast. Control what can be controlled; minimize fees and effort. Investing doesn’t have to be complex to be successful. Keep it simple and you will succeed.

But as the authors of this clear, practical, and enlightening book—part financial guide, part exposé—prove, there are just three simple rules you need to follow and only a few investment products that are necessary for an ideal portfolio. That's it. And the authors dispense with all that “expert” advice by deftly debunking what they call investing's Seven Deadly Temptations. By embracing commonsense solutions and rejecting investments that seem enticing but are needlessly complex, overpriced, and risky, you'll put not only yourself in a stronger position but the entire economy as well.

Book excerpt: "Investing is a simple activity, which an entire industry strives to make complicated to justify its existence.” At a time when a record number of people are investing in the stock market, this book by award-winning financial writer Nicolas Bérubé reveals how any investor can get rich and beat the professionals at their own game by investing less than an hour a year of their time. Admitting that he felt like a 'zero' after his first mistakes as a beginner investor, Nicolas has never stopped trying to understand what separates the winners from the losers. He has observed how the greatest investors around the world think and act, meeting and interviewing many of them, and going on to include the revealing results here. He also uses little-known examples, such as the forgotten theft of the Mona Lisa, Isaac Newton's stock market disaster, and the mistake made by one of the world's greatest investors, to make learning about investing a compelling journey through history, psychology, and finance. Finally, using the latest research, he identifies proven and accessible ways to invest, and offers concrete advice on how to get started or take control of your investments today. From Zero to Millionaire gives you the tools to understand the stock market, and the skills to better manage your investments.

Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “The clearest and best book out there to get you on the path to riches. This one’s special!”—Jim Cramer, host of CNBC’s Mad Money “Great tools for anyone wanting to dabble in the stock market.”—USA Today Phil Town is a very wealthy man, but he wasn’t always. In fact, he was living on a salary of $4,000 a year when some well-timed advice launched him down a highway of investing self-education that revealed what the true “rules” are and how to make them work in one’s favor. Chief among them, of course, is Rule #1: “Don’t lose money.” In this updated edition to the #1 national bestseller, you’ll learn more of Phil’s fresh, think-outside-the-box rules, including: • Don’t diversify • Only buy a stock when it’s on sale • Think long term—but act short term to maximize your return • And most of all, beat the big investors at their own game by using the tools designed for them! As Phil demonstrates in these pages, giant mutual funds can’t help but regress to the mean—and as we’ve all learned in recent years, that mean could be very disappointing indeed. Fortunately, Rule #1 takes readers step-by-step through a do-it-yourself process, equipping even the biggest investing-phobes with the tools they need to make quantum leaps toward financial security—regardless of where the market is headed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Described by the author as "a slightly autobiographical and heavily biased book about investing", Simple But Not Easy has plenty of interest to the experienced professional, and is aimed also at the interested amateur investor. The theme of the book is that investment is simpler than non-professionals think it is in that the rudiments can be expressed in ordinary English, and picked up by anybody. It is not a science. But investment is also difficult. People on the outside tend to think that anyone on the inside should be able to do better than the market indices. This is not so. Picking the managers who are likely to do better is a challenge. Richard Oldfield begins with a candid confession of some of his worst mistakes and what they have taught him. He discusses the different types of investment, why fees matter, and the importance of measuring performance properly. He also outlines what to look for, and what not to look for in an investment manager, when to fire a manager, and how to be a successful client.

This book was released on 2018-04-18 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An increasing number of States have entered the market looking to invest resources in foreign assets. This emergence of States acting as investors, managing the wealth of a nation and competing in the marketplace with private investors, has attracted growing and wide attention. This book is the first in-depth analysis of the international tax aspects of sovereign wealth investors, and serves as a comprehensive guide to designing tax policy, from a source State perspective, toward inbound sovereign wealth investment. Drawing on a wide range of relevant sources, including international instruments, domestic tax legislation, administrative practice, (international) case law and the writings of highly qualified publicists, the author fully addresses the following aspects of the subject: – the definition, functions, legal form, governance, home State tax status, etc. of sovereign wealth investors; – tax policy considerations and objectives (i.e., neutrality, equity and international attractiveness) from a source State perspective vis-à-vis foreign sovereign wealth investors; and – the potential impact of the sovereign immunity principle, bilateral tax treaties and European (Union) law on source States’ ability to achieve these tax policy objectives in relation to foreign sovereign wealth investors. The conceptual framework developed by the author will greatly assist source States in introducing new tax policy or in evaluating or reconsidering their existing tax policy vis-à-vis foreign sovereign wealth investors. In addition, practitioners, academics and (home States of) sovereign wealth investors will welcome this first authoritative analysis of an important but insufficiently understood subject in international tax.
