Book excerpt: Project activities in 1999, in Manaus-AM(Brasil): water supply of the trees, carbohydrate supply of the trees, seed provenances, wood quality. After five years of experiments the investigations (1) the biomass production and nutrition of five plantation grown tree species, (2) the comparison of nutrient fluxes and grwoth dynamics of Carapa guianensis grown in monoculture and enrichment plantations, and (3) the study of cambial growth dynamics of three selected Meliaceae were terminated. In 1999 the data evaluation was carried out.

Book excerpt: In cooperation with the Embrapa Amazonia Ocidental in Manaus (Amazonas, Brasil) and three German projects (ENV 23, ENV 45, ENV 52), in the year 2000 we especially investigated (1) photosynthesis and carbohydrate allocation and (2) the plant-water relationships of the selected tree species. Special emphasis was given to the three species of the family Meliaceae. Comparative experiments have been done for monoculture, polycultures, enrichment cultures, and primary forests.

This book was released on 1998 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the first phase of the project (january 1, 1995 until april 30, 1998), the influence of the water and element supply of tree different plantation systems on the growth and wood formation of eight native tree species (Swietenia macrophylla, Carapa guianensis, Cedrela odorata, Dipterex odorata, Hymenaea courbaril, Ceiba pentandra, Virola surinamensis, Tabebuia heptaphylla) was investigated. In 1998, the data were analyzed. The results subsequently served as a basis for the second phase of the project (comp. chapter 5) which should give deeper insight into the relationship between exogenous and endogenous input, the plant metabolism, and the wood formation and wood quality of plantation-grown trees. due to the results obtained in these studies in the second phase of the project, special attention is given to the subsequent species : Swietenia macrophylla, Carapa guianensis, Cedrela odorata, Dipterex odorata, and Hymenaea courbaril. Corresponding investigations are carried out in the plantation system I (monoculture system) in comparison to system III (enrichment system). Supplementary studies on the environment-tree growth relationship of Swietenia macrophylla and Carapa guianensis are carried out in a mixed culture system (system II, comp. Schmidt et al. 1999, chapter 5). For the study on wood quality and the significance of endogenous factors for wood formation experimental areas of the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisa da Amazonia ( INPA, Manaus) 45 km north of Manaus, and some trees from primary forests of the region were included in this study.

This book was released on 1995 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These investigations on growth and wood formation of native tree species of Central Amazonia are part of the development of sustainable landuse systems in this areas at the EMBRAPA-CPAA, Manaus, AM (Brasil). In agricultural systems a small portion of trees for high quality timber production could be of ecological and economic value as well for the landscape development in the Manaus region. Especialy for the recultivation of degraded land areas a small portion of longliving trees for high quality timber production might contribute to the stabilization of agroforestry systems. Therefore in recent years the EMBRAPA-CPAA extented its work to studies on growth of forestry tree species on degraded land areas. For most of the tree species used for timber production in the Manaus region only few informations on growth and site demands for high quality timber production are available. Therefore in this project the influence of site conditions of degraded land areas on growth and wood formation of eight selected native tree species will be investigated. Due to the specific site conditions of degraded land areas the investigations will be carried out with special referenc to the mineral element (SHIFT ENV 23) and water supply (SHIFT ENV 45) of the trees. These investigations should give some practical help for the selection of tree species and management practices for high quality timber production in agroforestry systems.

(andiroba) e Cedrela odorata L. (cedro).

Book excerpt: The conference focused on recent work in freshwater wetlands [both natural and constructed] with a view toward understanding wetland processes in a watershed context. Since humans have played important roles in watershed dynamics for years, attention was given to the human dimensions of wetland and watershed uses. Contributed sessions were organized on: biogeochemical cycling in wetlands; human health issues related to water; wetland restoration and reforestation; the role of wetlands in agricultural systems; wetlands and USA environmental law; chemical ecology and natural products from wetlands; water and wetlands in science education; and regional water strategies.

Book excerpt: Agroforestry is an age old practice throughout the world, but its recognition as a science is nearly three decades old. The scientific and systematic research on tree-crop interactions, in India, started in late 1970's and got major support and impetus with the establishment of All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Agroforestry in 1983 by ICAR. Today AICRP on Agroforestry has its network through out the country. Under AICRP and through the individual efforts of State Agricultural Universities, location specific agroforestry systems has been recommended to suit agro-climatic zones, landholdings and economic status of the region. Though extensive research had been done till date, but it is not available to scientific world, farming communities (who are the backbone of Indian rural development), students and inquisitive readers in one manuscript. This prompted the authors to club the information on agroforestry systems and practices prevailing in India in form of book. For the sake of convenience, agroforestry systems prevailing in India have been divided into four broad sections i) Agroforestry in India ii) Agroforestry system and practices in North, West and Central India iii) Agroforestry systems and practices in East, North-East and Southern India iv) Allied topics related to Agroforestry. Section one cover topics covering agroforestry experiences, research and extension efforts done in the last 25 years in India. Section two includes 13 chapters and section three covers 14 chapters wherein agroforestry research vis-à-vis agroclimatic zones of different states of India have been discussed. The last section comprising of 8 chapters includes topics related to role of agroforestry in soil conservation, women development; management of agroforestry; modeling; rehabilitation of mine spoils and breeding of agroforestry tree species.
