During the drying period, samples were tested for moisture condition by the relative humidity method (CRD-C 76). The tests were performed at six Corps of Engineers laboratories. The relation between shrinkage, expressed as length change, percent, and equilibrium relative humidity was studied. No single pattern was apparent. Units at modified British equilibrium which would be expected to be in equilibrium with 21% relative humidity were found by test to be in equilibrium with relative humidities from 0.0 to 33.5%. Further study is recommended. (Author).

Book excerpt: With the rising popularity of single-wythe Concrete Masonry Unit (CMU) walls, concern has developed regarding the water resistance of this structural system. The University of Wyoming worked with Atkinson-Noland & Associates (ANA) and the National Concrete Masonry Association (NCMA) to perform research concerning shrinkage crack development along the bond line between the mortar and CMU interface. The research objective was to better understand the mechanisms that drive the development of bond line delaminations in CMU construction. Preliminary tests were performed on the blocks to ensure they adhered to American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) specifications. Five variables were analyzed with respect to mortar shrinkage and crack development: mortar type, block type, temperature, relative humidity, and wind. Joint quality was also analyzed and measured by the depth of the joint. Wall specimens were constructed and cured in different environmental conditions, and shrinkage cracks were measured and monitored. Each delamination (crack) was referenced with its environmental and material conditions, and this information was used in the data analysis. Data was analyzed graphically and statistically. Recommendations for CMU construction were determined from these results of 102 specimens. Cracking occurs at a significantly higher rate when specimens are exposed to high temperature conditions.

All M, S, and N mortar combinations shown in the Proportion Specification of ASTM Specification for Mortar for Unit Masonry (C 270) were used, including prepackaged M and S mortars in combination with concrete and clay masonry units, each from a single source. Research was directed at establishing the effects on masonry wall water permeance of mortar water content, cementitious material content of mortar, masonry unit physical properties, the effect of storage (curing), and exposure condition (varying water quantity and pressure. Test results showed that (1) all mortar types are capable of satisfactory performance in a masonry wall; (2) properly designed masonry walls are capable of resisting water permeance when quality workmanship and materials are used; (3) there is a need for specific controls in the preparation of specimens to be subjected to this test method; and (4) there is a need for revisions to ASTM E 514 that will incorporate a more realistic approach to exposure conditions and specific requirements to differentiate among specimens being tested for workmanship or materials.
