Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project investigated the properties and performance of the products used for spall repair of concrete pavement. A survey of Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) maintenance engineers produced a roster of 10 repair materials currently in use in the state. After identifying the key characteristics of a successful repair material, a laboratory testing program was developed to evaluate the properties of the repair materials. These materials were tested for strength, compatibility, and bond to quantify their characteristics relative to those products known to work well.

Book excerpt: "The Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) H-106 maintenance experiment and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Long-Term Monitoring (LTM) of Pavement Maintenance Materials Test Sites project studied the repair of partialdepth spalls in concrete pavements. The purpose of partial-depth spall repair is to restore a pavement's structural integrity, improve its ride quality, and extend its serviceable life. Highway agencies spend a large amount of time and money annually performing partial-depth spall repairs, both as temporary and permanent fixes. Frequently, the repairs are not made as efficiently as desired or do not perform as long as intended. The primary consequences are added disruption to traffic, more exposure of patching crews to traffic, and additional maintenance expenditures. The purpose of this study, then, was to address the merits and deficiencies of current spall repair materials, designs, and practices. The study evaluated the relative performance of selected patching materials, as well as the effect of selected repair methods. The study also examined repair material properties and tests that correlate well with field performance. This report documents the entire portland cement concrete (PCC) partial-depth spall repair study, including the installation of 30 unique repair types (i.e., combinations of patching material and patching method) at 4 different test sites, the laboratory testing of experimental repair materials, and the 7-year performance monitoring of the various partial-depth repairs. It also discusses the results of comprehensive statistical analyses conducted on material performance and laboratory testing data. The results of a detailed cost-effectiveness analysis are also presented"--Technical report documentation page.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Strategic Highway Research Program's project H-106, the partial-depth spall-repair experiment, is the most extensive effort to date to evaluate the performance of various rapid-setting materials and procedures used in the repair of partial-depth spalls in Portland cement concrete pavements. Four test installations consisting of a total of 1,607 patches, were constructed in 4 climatic zones, and the experiment investigated the performance of several cementitious, polymeric, and bituminous patching materials, and procedures used in repairing jointed concrete pavements. The techniques included the following: saw and patch, chip and patch, mill and patch, waterblast and patch, and minimal praparation clean and patch under adverse conditions. The patch performance has been good: only 2.3% of the patches have failed.

This book was released on 2001 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manual (FHWA-RD-99-152) presents guidelines and recommendations to assist highway maintenance agencies and other related organizations in planning, constructing, and monitoring the performance of concrete pavement partial-depth spall repair projects. Included in the manual are discussions pertaining to when partial-depth spall repair operations are appropriate, the types of repair materials and construction methods that should be used, how each individual step in a spall repair operation should be performed, and how the performance and cost-effectiveness of spall repairs can be evaluated. This report will be of interest and benefit to various levels of agency maintenance personnel, from crew supervisors to the chief maintenance engineer.

Book excerpt: Because of the nature of the hydraulic structures over which the Army Corps of Engineers has responsibility, there are frequent requirements to repair spalled or eroded concrete that is underwater, close to the waterline, or in areas from which it is difficult to divert flow or dry the concrete. This investigation evaluated the effectiveness of commercially available products in repair of concrete with wet surfaces. Slant-shear bond and compressive strength tests were conducted on each of the 22 materials recommended for repair of spalls in wet concrete. Based on the results of these screening tests, eight materials were selected for additional laboratory tests including: a) bonding capacity in direct tension; b) bonding capacity under flexural stress; c)resistance to abrasion; d) resistance to cycles of freezing and thawing; e) impact resistance; and f) thermal capability with concrete. Test results and material costs were used in developing a rating system to compare the relative performance of the various materials. Overall performance ratings indicate two materials, an epoxy and a cement-based product, were nearly equal in outperforming the other products tested. Which of these two materials is to be specified for a given repair will likely depend on the specific project requirements and critical material properties. Concrete repair. (edc).

Book excerpt: This publication includes two pavement maintenance manuals intended for use by highway maintenance agencies and contracted maintenance firms in the field and in the office. Each is a compendium of good practices for Portland cement concrete joint resealing and partial-depth spall repair, respectively, and stem from two Strategic Highway Research Program studies. The first manual covers the need for joint resealing, the planning and design, construction, and evaluation of joint seal performance. The second manual gives a description of procedures and materials recommended for partial-depth spall repair in jointed Portland cement concrete pavements. The manual covers the details of planning and design, construction, and evaluation of performance.
