Book excerpt: Excerpt from Attenuation of Pollutants in Municipal Landfill Leachate by Clay Minerals, Vol. 2: Heavy-Metal Adsorption The accumulation of these potentially toxic heavy metals in soils makes long-term application of municipal leachates to the land hazardous, be cause heavy metals enter the human food chain by accumulating in plants. How ever, a lack of basic data on the reactions of these metal ions with soil col loids in the presence of a complex solution matrix, such as leachate, has ham pered efforts to determine what levels of application can be tolerated without degradation or loss of the soil for food crop production. This book was released on 2018-01-06 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Attenuation of Pollutants in Municipal Landfill Leachate by Clay Minerals, Vol. 1: Column Leaching and Field Verification Leachate reduced the hydraulic conductivity of the columns during the laboratory experiments. A similar change in hydraulic conductivity was not clearly shown in the field data but probably exists. A ranking system was developed for evaluating the relative pollu tion hazard for municipal leachates. The new ranking method overcomes the problems found in a method for rating hazardous wastes that was previously proposed to the u.s. Environmental Protection Agency. The results of the study suggest that over-all pollution from land fill leachate would be reduced if landfill liners of earth materials were designed for higher hydraulic conductivity. Properly designed liners would selectively attenuate the toxic pollutants from the leachate and allow the ground water to dilute the nontoxic components that can be tolerated without harmful effects at much higher concentrations. Book Synopsis The Scientific Management of Hazardous Wastes by : C. B. Cope
Download or read book The Scientific Management of Hazardous Wastes written by C. B. Cope and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1983-03-17 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, first published in 1983, three independent scientists examine the results of research and development into the environmental aspects of hazardous wastes management. Within a legislative framework, the limits of our scientific knowledge are carefully defined and the ways in which this knowledge is extrapolated and applied are examined. Significant areas of uncertainty are identified and the authors have not been afraid to draw attention to the fallibility of certain interpretations. Landfill science, leachate characteristics, pollutant attenuation and toxicity measurement are reviewed. Alternative technologies such as chemical treatment and incineration are compared. Risk assessment, cost implications and public acceptance are examined. It provides an objective assessment of the scientific and practical issues involved and constitutes a valuable source book for all concerned with hazardous wastes management, planning and regulatory control, pollution prevention and environmental protection.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The treatment of contaminated soil is a permanently relevant subject for ensuirng the quality of the environment. A wide variety of soils contaminated witht a broad range of harmful chemical compounds all around the the world, call for many different treatment strategies. Research activities focus on affordable methods offering the greatest possible effect, whilst limiting the potential side effects. This book sums up the research activities of Research Centre 188 which has cooperated with the Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg, the University of Hamburg and GKSS in Geesthacht over the last 12 years, thus greatly advancing our knowledge in this field.
