Book excerpt: A simple approximate method to predict interlaminar stresses at straight free edges of symmetric composite laminates under uniaxial loads has been developed based on overall force and moment equilibrium and on the principle of minimum complementary potential energy. Results using the present method compare well with other analytical methods. The present method is considerably more efficient, especially in its ability to easily analyze thick laminates, and could be implemented on a personal computer. The solution for the special cases of angle-plied and cross-plied laminates is also obtained (in closed form) and is simpler than for general laminates. This solution for certain cross-plied laminates coincides with a previous solution derived from a special version of plate theory. Using the analysis, the sensitivity of the solution to various parameters such as different elastic constants and different ways of determining the longitudinal in-plane normal stress is examined. In addition, the solution shows that the thin resin layer which exists between plies does not affect the interlaminar stresses calculated from the orthotropic and homogeneous assumption for individual plies. The boundary layer where the interlaminar stresses are significant is defined and discussed and the concept of the "effective ply thickness" introduced. Finally, an experimental technique to measure in-plane displacement at the top surface of the laminate inside the boundary layer was developed. The experimental results are in good agreement with the predictions from theory.

Book excerpt: From the Author's PrefaceThe objective of this book is to provide a thorough and systematic study of the problem of laminated composites containing stress concentrations. Stress concentrations are introduced in laminated plates in the forms of circular holes, elliptical openings and straight cracks. These forms of cutouts have many practical applications, and are familiar to most engineers. Stress concentrations exist in all known structural components. Stress concentrations have great practical importance because they are normally the cause of failure. In addition to stress analyses of laminated composites, we need more fundamental understanding of the failure mode, the failure criterion, the effects on global laminate response, and the design of composites in the presence of stress concentrations. In this book, all the subjects studied are closely related to the problem of stress concentrations in laminated composites . . . . All the models are verified with many experimental results. The underlying objective of this comprehensive study is to give the readers an in-depth and thorough understanding of the problem of stress concentrations in composites. This book is the first to address the problem of laminated composites containing stress concentrations in a systematic way.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Design and manufacture of a variable thickness composite laminate such as a helicopter yoke involves tapering the laminate by dropping individual plies at discrete internal locations, in order to tailor the stiffness of the laminate. The ply drop in the laminate creates large interlaminar stresses and initiates delamination. Therefore, there is a necessity to investigate the fundamental failure mechanisms and controlling parameters that account for the delamination mode of failure in tapered laminates. In this thesis, a numerical and experimental study on interlaminar stresses and delamination in tapered laminates is presented, including a critical and comprehensive review on earlier works on this type of structure. Numerical analyses performed involved development of partial hybrid stress finite elements needed to enhance computational efficiency, and development of a physical concept-based modified shear-lag model that is based on the essential assumptions that both plies and resin layers are treated as carriers of tensile stress and also to act as stress-transfer media. Experimental analysis was attempted to assess the accuracy of the numerical predictions. For this purpose, tapered NCT-301 Graphite/Epoxy specimens were manufactured using a ply in-fill technique for the cured consolidation and tested under quasi-static uniaxial tension. To perform strength and delamination analyses of the tapered laminate, the laminate was modeled as a generalized plane deformation problem, where all the variables involved in the model are independent of the coordinate system. Also quasi-three dimensional partial hybrid finite elements were used to quantify the analysis. In addition to the plies, the inter-ply resin at the critical ply interface was also modeled in order to have direct and realistic interlaminar responses. Stress-based criteria that have proved to be effective in determination of critical location and load of delamination onset were utilized in this study to predict the delamination strength of the laminate. A good correlation between the predictions and experimental results were observed. Evaluation of strain energy release rates of delaminations occurring at the critical interfaces of the tapered laminate was carried out by using the J -integral approach. This was possible because of the path-independence of the J -integral that results in avoiding the need for analyzing the singular stress field near the delamination tip and reducing the computing effort required. Effects of various design parameters on the structural performance of the tapered laminate were studied so as to gain an insight into design considerations for tapered composite structures.

Book excerpt: The delamination failure of laminated composites exhibits two distinct characteristics; (1) the corresponding failure strengths display considerable scatter, and (2) the morphologies of the fracture surfaces and the interlaminar strengths are dependent on the magnitude of the fiber orientation difference (abbreviated as FOD below) angle between the two adjacent plies of the interface. A variational solution technique is developed to determine the three-dimensional edge effect stresses around pin-loaded holes in symmetric laminated composites. The stress state around the holes is divided into two parts, one the in-plane stress state determined using the Classical Laminated Plate Theory (CLPT) and the other the boundary layer stress state arising from the edge effects which only exists in the vicinity of the holes. The equilibrium equations of boundary layer stress state with zeroth-order approximation are derived from a set of power expansions. Analytical solutions for the boundary layer stress state are then obtained by imposing zeroth-order stress functions on the variational principle of complementary energy. The developed variational solution technique is versatile, which can be used to calculate the edge effect stresses at straight free edges, curved free edges and pin-loaded hole edges with or without friction in laminated composites. An experimental investigation is conducted to study the effects of fiber orientations on the interlaminar shear (ILS) strengths of CYTEC ® G40-800/5276-1 graphite/epoxy laminated composites. The ILS strengths at the [straight theta]-interfaces ([straight theta] = 0°, 10°, 20°, 30°, 40°, 50°, 60°, 70°, 80° and 90°), around which the two neighboring plies have a FOD angle [straight theta], are experimentally characterized using the modified double notch shear specimens with an elaborately designed layup. A stochastic simulation model is proposed in a phenomenological sense, in which the probabilistic dependence of ILS strengths on the FOD angles [straight theta] is simulated as a non-Gaussian nonstationary stochastic process within the bounded interval [0,?/2]. Two innovative delamination criteria in terms of quadratic and cubic polynomials in each case, are developed based on the Malmeister strength theory and Hashin assumption. The intent of the developed criteria is to include the effects of [straight theta]-dependent and directionally-dependent interlaminar strengths into the failure evaluation of laminated composites, as demonstrated by the experiments in the present thesis. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the peridynamic (PD) differential operator, which enables the nonlocal form of local differentiation. PD is a bridge between differentiation and integration. It provides the computational solution of complex field equations and evaluation of derivatives of smooth or scattered data in the presence of discontinuities. PD also serves as a natural filter to smooth noisy data and to recover missing data. This book starts with an overview of the PD concept, the derivation of the PD differential operator, its numerical implementation for the spatial and temporal derivatives, and the description of sources of error. The applications concern interpolation, regression, and smoothing of data, solutions to nonlinear ordinary differential equations, single- and multi-field partial differential equations and integro-differential equations. It describes the derivation of the weak form of PD Poisson’s and Navier’s equations for direct imposition of essential and natural boundary conditions. It also presents an alternative approach for the PD differential operator based on the least squares minimization. Peridynamic Differential Operator for Numerical Analysis is suitable for both advanced-level student and researchers, demonstrating how to construct solutions to all of the applications. Provided as supplementary material, solution algorithms for a set of selected applications are available for more details in the numerical implementation.

Book excerpt: An approximate solution for interlaminar stresses in finite width, laminated composites subjected to uniform extensional, and bending loads is presented. The solution is based upon the principle of minimum complementary energy and an assumed, statically admissible stress state, derived by considering local material mismatch effects and global equilibrium requirements. The stresses in each layer are approximated by polynomial functions of the thickness coordinate, multiplied by combinations of exponential functions of the in-plane coordinate, expressed in terms of fourteen unknown decay parameters. Imposing the stationary condition of the laminate complementary energy with respect to the unknown variables yields a system of fourteen non-linear algebraic equations for the parameters. Newton's method is implemented to solve this system. Once the parameters are known, the stresses can be easily determined at any point in the laminate. Results are presented for through-thickness and interlaminar stress distributions for angle-ply, cross-ply (symmetric and unsymmetric laminates), and quasi-isotropic laminates subjected to uniform extension and bending. It is shown that the solution compares well with existing finite element solutions and represents an improved approximate solution for interlaminar stresses, primarily at interfaces where global equilibrium is satisfied by the in-plane stresses, but large local mismatch in properties requires the presence of interlaminar stresses. Book excerpt: The mechanism of load transfer between the layers of a fiber-reinforced composite laminate of finite width is investigated by methods of classical elasticity. The finite- difference technique was employed to obtain numerical solutions of the governing equations of elasticity. Two modes of interlaminar load transfer are identified. The response of the general laminate is investigated, and the influence and interaction of the two load transfer modes are determined. Variables considered in the study include stacking sequence, laminate geometry, material properties, and fiber orientation. Characteristics of the finite- difference solution procedure are investigated, and methods are developed for study of convergence of the numerical solutions. Employing the insight gained by the results of the investigation, expressions for the 6average6 interlaminar stresses as a function of material properties and laminate geometry are developed for consideration in the design of a finite width laminate subjected to extensional loads.
