Book Synopsis Interactions of C, N, P and S Biogeochemical Cycles and Global Change by : Roland Wollast
Download or read book Interactions of C, N, P and S Biogeochemical Cycles and Global Change written by Roland Wollast and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a natural extension of the SCOPE (Scientific Committee of Problems on the Environment) volumes on the carbon (C), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and sulfur (S) biogeochemical cycles and their interactions (Likens, 1981; Bolin and Cook, 1983). Substantial progress in the knowledge of these cycles has been made since publication of those volumes. In particular, the nature and extent of biological and inorganic interactions between these cycles have been identified, positive and negative feedbacks recognized and the relationship between the cycles and global environmental change preliminarily elucidated. In March 1991, a NATO Advanced Research Workshop was held for one week in Melreux, Belgium to reexamine the biogeochemical cycles of C, N, P and S on a variety of time and space scales from a holistic point of view. This book is the result of that workshop. The biogeochemical cycles of C, N, P and S are intimately tied to each other through biological productivity and subsequently to problems of global environmental change. These problems may be the most challenging facing humanity in the 21 st century. In the broadest sense, "global change" encompasses both changes to the status of the large, globally connected atmospheric, oceanic and terrestrial environments (e. g. tropospheric temperature increase) and change occurring as the result of nearly simultaneous local changes in many regions of the world (e. g. eutrophication).

Book Synopsis Black Carbon in Marine Sediments by : AmyMarie Accardi-Dey
Download or read book Black Carbon in Marine Sediments written by AmyMarie Accardi-Dey and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sorption is a key factor in determining the fate of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the environment. Here, PAH sorption is proposed as the sum of two mechanisms: absorption into a biogenic, organic carbon (OC) fraction and adsorption onto a combustion-derived, black carbon (BC) fraction. To study BC adsorption, a 375 deg C thermal oxidation method was employed to remove OC and isolate the BC fraction. Test studies showed that nitrogen-containing macromolecules charred during this pretreatment causing a positive bias to the BC measurement. Meanwhile, the oxidation of relatively small BC particles underestimated the total BC content in non-charring samples. Models based on carbon oxidation were then proposed to estimate reasonably the total BC and OC contents of sediment samples. The adsorption of pyrene onto isolated BC particles was then studied by constructing a nonlinear isotherm, which was characterized with a BC-normalized distribution coefficient and a Freundlich exponent. Pyrene sorption to Boston Harbor sediment was then modeled as the sum of OC absorption and BC adsorption using the measured adsorption parameters and literature absorption values. Finally, literature reports of high PAH distribution coefficients from the field and nonlinear PAH isotherms from the laboratory were re-explained by considering BC adsorption.
Book Synopsis Chemical Reference Materials by : National Research Council
Download or read book Chemical Reference Materials written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-10-02 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The accuracy of chemical oceanographic measurements depends on calibration against reference materials to ensure comparability over time and among laboratories. Several key parameters lack reference materials for measurements in seawater, particles in the water column, and sediments. Without reference materials it is difficult to produce the reliable data sets or long-term baseline studies that are essential to verify global change and oceanic stability. Chemical Reference Materials : Setting the Standards for Ocean Science identifies the most urgently required chemical reference materials based on key themes for oceanographic research and provides suggestions as to how they can be developed within realistic cost constraints. Chemical analyses of seawater are uniquely difficult given the poorly known speciation and the low concentration of many of the analytes of interest. Analyses of suspended and sedimentary marine particulate materials present their own distinct challenges, primarily due to potential interference by predominant mineral phases of different types. Of all the analytical methods applied to marine waters and particles, at present only a small fraction can be systematically evaluated via comparison to reference materials that represent the appropriate natural concentrations and matrices. Specifically, the committee was charged with the following tasks: - compile from available sources a list of important oceanographic research questions that may benefit from chemical reference standards; - create a comprehensive list of reference materials currently available for oceanographic studies; - identify and prioritize the reference materials needed to study the identified research questions; - determine for each priority analyte whether reference materials and/or analytic methods should be standardized; and - identify the most appropriate approaches for the development and future production of reference materials for ocean sciences.

Book Synopsis Preliminary Investigations of the Association of Organic Material and Carbon Dioxide with Sedimentary Particles by : James B. Smith
Download or read book Preliminary Investigations of the Association of Organic Material and Carbon Dioxide with Sedimentary Particles written by James B. Smith and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The removal of dissolved organic compounds and carbon dioxide from sea water by sedimentary minerals and the subsequent incorporation of both in sedimentary deposits are determined by various environmental factors. The laboratory experiments discussed in this report were devised so as to permit consideration of the effect of type of organic compound, solution concentration, mineralogy, pH, chlorinity, mineral settling rate and temperature on the mineral-organic association in aqueous systems. The investigation was conducted by radiometric analysis with the use of dl-alanine, glycine, aspartic acid, oxalic acid, succinic acid, fructose, glucose ad sucrose, all known to occur in natural waters and deposits. These organic compounds were spiked with their carbon-14 counterpart. The carbon dioxide phase was accomplished in a like manner with the use of spiked carbon-14 dioxide. The minerals under investigation were montmorillonite, illite, kaolinite and quartz, all commonly found in marine deposits. It has been demonstrated that the association of amino acids, dibasic acids and carbohydrates with minerals is primarily dependent upon the molecular weight, structure and functional groups of the compounds as well as upon the available surface area and surface "activity" of the mineral. Impressed on these principal variables are pH, chlorinity and temperature of the system. The total phenomena observed in these experiments can best be explained by the formation of a complex clay-organic gel. The data cannot be explained on the basis of a physical phenomenon alone, and it appears that the triggering for the mechanism forming the complex gel is in part physical and chemical as related to both the organic compound and the mineral. Once the initial system is formed, the growing particles may act as a molecular sieve capable of continuously removing organic material from solution during the settling process

Readers will find a diverse range of research by leading experts that have used micro-XRF core scanners in a wide range of scientific applications. The book includes specific application papers reporting on the use of XRF core scanners in a variety of marine, lacustrine, and pollution studies. In addition, coverage also examines practical aspects of core scanner usage, data optimisation and data calibration and interpretation. In a little over a decade, micro-XRF sediment core scanners have made a substantive contribution to palaeoenvironmental research. Their impact is based on their ability to rapidly, non-destructively and automatically scan sediment cores. Not only do they rapidly provide important proxy data without damaging samples, but they can obtain environmental data at decadal, annual and even sub-annual scales. This volume will help both experienced and new users of these non-destructive core scanners take full advantage of one of the most powerful geochemical screening tools in the environmental scientist's toolbox.
