Book excerpt: Bamboo occupies an unparalleled position in the plant kingdom in terms of its distribution, diversity and uses in the tropics and subtropics. In addition to featuring prominently in the lives of rural communities, particularly in Asia, it continues to find new applications in such wide ranging areas as paper and rayon manufacture; construction; architecture; engineering; handicrafts; food and medicine. Within Asia, India is second only to China in terms of the quantities and varieties of bamboo species found in the country. However, as in many other countries, information on this subject is generally inadequate and inaccessible. Contradictory reports on various aspects of bamboos, especially relating to taxonomic and phytogeographic observations, further add to the confusion regarding classification. There is thus an urgent need for a review of the current literature and a compilation of information on the various species of bamboo, including their synonyms. This compilation by K.K. Seethalakshmi and M.S. Muktesh Kumar, scientists specializing in plant physiology and taxonomy respectively at the Kerala Forest Research Institute, seeks to fulfil this need. Based primarily on a literature survey, it provides a comprehensive and holistic account of 128 bamboo species belonging to 18 genera occurring in India. By synthesizing and consolidating the work done so far on each of the covered species, it is expected to illuminate current information gaps and to provide a solid foundation for further work in this area.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book promotes the study of material spatiality in late antiquity: not just the study of buildings, but of the people, dress and objects used within them, drawing on all available source material. It seeks to explore the material world as it was lived in late antiquity, in an interpretative inquiry, rather than simply describing the evidence that has survived until today. The volume presents a series of comprehensive bibliographic essays which provide an overview of relevant literature, along with discussions of the nature of the sources, of relevant approaches and field methods. The main section of the book explores domestic space, vessels in context, dress, shops and workshops, religious space, and military space. Synthetic papers drawing on a wide range of archaeological, art-historical and textual sources are complemented by case-studies of context-rich late antique sites in the East Mediterranean and elsewhere, including Pella, Dura-Europos, Scythopolis, and Sagalassos.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Limnological Aspects of Recreational Lakes" considers the many problems associated with the recreational use of lakes, reservoirs, and ponds. These standing-water bodies receive the most concentrated and varied recreational use of any waters, and provide enjoyment to the greatest number of people. Individuals using such areas soon become aware of associated biological problems and often demand remedial measures to alleviate developing nuisances or the prevention of them before they arise. This book is written for the person faced with problems of interpretation and management in dealing with the phenomena of recreational lakes. In most States, a permit or permission must be obtained from an appropriate agency prior to the institution of controls. Then controls are instituted, the recommended controlling agent and its field application must be tempered with a scientist's astute knowledge of both the problem and the ecological ramifications of a control program.

Book excerpt: Dura-Europos is one of Syria's most important archaeological sites. Situated on the edge of the Euphrates river, it was the subject of extensive excavations in the 1920s and 30s by teams from Yale University and the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres. Controlled variously by Seleucid, Parthian, and Roman powers, the site was one of impressive religious and linguistic diversity: it was home to at least nineteen sanctuaries, amongst them a Synagogue and a Christian building, and many languages, including Greek, Latin, Persian, Palmyrene, and Hebrew which were excavated on inscriptions, parchments, and graffiti. Based on the author's work excavating at the site with the Mission Franco-Syrienne d'Europos-Doura and extensive archival research, this book provides an overview of the site and its history, and traces the story of its investigation from archaeological discovery to contemporary destruction.

Book excerpt: During the first to the fifth centuries AD the Danube-Balkan region formed a buffer zone between the Latin speaking world of the west and the Greek speaking lands of the east. This book deals with the development and influence of the architectural plan of the late Roman villa in the Danube-Balkan region. It combines an archaeological and an architectural historical approach to the examination of the plans which form the primary focus of the research. At the same time, the functional and decorative elements of the buildings are considered in detail where appropriate. The research is based on extensive fieldwork and draws together the existing literature to elucidate the architecture of the late Roman villa in the Danube-Balkan region and to establish its broader significance. A systematic study of this nature has not previously been carried out.

This book brings together twelve papers which present some of the new approaches and research aims; all relate to issues of sequence and space, and aim to further understanding both the development of Pompeii and the dynamics of ancient urban society. The contributions are: Sequence and space in Pompeii: an introduction (Rick Jones and Sara E. Bon); Formation processes at Pompeii (Sara E. Bon); What was Pompeii before 200 BC? Excavations in the House of Joseph II and in the House of the Wedding of Hercules (Paolo Carafa); The context of the House of the Surgeon (Sara E. Bon); Investigating the vocabulary of the Roman house (Eleanor W. Leach); The Pompeii forum project 1994-95 (John J. Dobbins); New directions in economic and environmental research at Pompeii (Jane Richardson, Gill Thompson and Angelo Genovese); Pompeii AD 79: a population in flux? (Estelle Lager); Private toilets at Pompeii (Gemma Jansen); The social texture of Pompeii (Damian J. Robinson); Sequence and space at Pompeii: casual observations from an Etruscologist (Jane K. Whitehead); Concluding thoughts (Stephen L. Dyson).
