Book excerpt: Finally, small hive beetles are unique among other beetle species in their ability to find hiding places within the colony where they are confined by honey bee hosts (Chapter 6) until the ambient temperature decreases, whereafter the beetles enter the thermoregulatory cluster of honey bees (Chapter 7). The research presented herein contributes to a greater understanding of attributes of small hive beetles that enable them to integrate successfully into honey bee nests.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The small hive beetle, Aethina tumida Murray (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae), is one of the most recent honey bee pests of economic importance, especially in the southeastern United States. Various in-hive traps have been developed to attempt to control the populations of this invasive pest within honey bee colonies. The first year of my research focused on comparing the effectiveness of three commercially available traps for removing small hive beetles. Thirty-two colonies were established with 0.9-kg package bees with a queen in four apiaries. Eight colonies were placed in each apiary, each colony randomly receiving one of four treatments: the three-chambered Hood trap, the disposable Better Beetle Blaster, the Freeman tray trap, or having no trap as a control colony. Two of each type of colony treatment was present in each apiary. Data was collected over a seven month period from April to November 2010. The Freeman tray trap was determined to be the most effective at capturing small hive beetles compared to the other traps and the controls. More adult beetles were consistently trapped within the Freeman trap over the season, with the Better Beetle Blaster and Hood trap capturing more beetles in late summer than earlier in the year. The first and second years of my research additionally investigated the possibility of adult small hive beetles being attracted to dead beetles within traps for a "trapping sink" effect. Five apiaries of three colonies were established with 0.9-kg package bees in 2010 and fifteen apiaries of three colonies were established with 0.9-kg package bees in 2011. The "sink" colonies in each apiary were treated with both the Better Beetle Blaster and Freeman tray trap. In 2010, two apiaries were treated with one sink, two apiaries were treated with two sinks, and the remaining colony had no traps as a control. In 2011, the same treatments were used in the same ratio with six one sink apiaries, six two sink apiaries, and three control apiaries. The data for both investigative years was collected from April to November and compiled for a total of 20 apiaries and 60 colonies. The lack of significance between the trapped and control apiaries demonstrated that there is no discernible "trapping sink" effect when a percentage of colonies within an apiary have small hive beetle traps. This suggests that the recommendation for small hive beetle control within an apiary would be to place traps in every colony.

This book was released on 2013 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The small hive beetle (Aethina tumida, SHB) is an invasive pest of honey bee (Apis mellifera) colonies in the United States. The adult and larval beetles can ruin honey through fecal contamination and by vectoring a mutualistic yeast (Kodamaea ohmeri) that causes honey fermentation. These beetles also impact honey bee colonies by feeding on bee eggs, bee brood, and pollen. Severe beetle infestations can cause colonies to decline or abscond. The SHB has been present in the United States since at least 1998. Since then, there have been several published papers on how to successfully rear these beetles. Laboratory rearing of SHBs allows for immediate access to adults and immature stages without having to constantly collect them from infested bee colonies. A clean and cost effective method for rearing SHBs is presented in this thesis. There is little published information on the external morphology of the SHB. Murray, Schmolke, Menier, and Jouan were some of the few authors to publish on this subject. Photography of the adult and larval stages are provided with emphasis on the adult morphology. Chemical and cultural controls are typically used to keep SHBs at a tolerable level. Only a few articles have been published on the biological control of SHBs. While some generalist fungal pathogens and commercially available nematodes have been reported to attack SHBs, there have been no reports of any host-specific predators, parasitoids, or pathogenic protozoa, fungi, nematodes, bacteria, or viruses. One protozoan pathogen has been discovered in the process of writing this thesis, but little is known about its life cycle, the effects that it has on SHBs, and whether this pathogen infects other beetles or insects. Dissection techniques for the adults and larvae are discussed in this thesis.

Book excerpt: In the second study (Chapter 3), airborne volatiles were collected from commercial bumble bee and honey bee colonies and from each component of both colony types (adult bees, brood, honey, pollen and wax) to determine the chemical profile of volatiles present. In general, the volatile profiles of bumble bee and honey bee colonies were dissimilar with only 7 of 148 total compounds detected common to both colonies.
Book Synopsis The Foraging Behavior of the Honey Bee (Apis mellifera, L.) by : John Purdy

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Foraging Behavior of the Honeybee (Apis mellifera, L.) provides a scholarly resource for knowledge on the regulation, communication, resource allocation, learning and characteristics of honeybee foraging behavior at the individual and colony level. Foraging, in this context, is the exploration of the environment around a honey bee hive and the collection of resources (pollen, nectar, water, etc.) by bees in the worker caste of a colony. Honeybees have the unique ability to balance conflicting and changing resource needs in rapidly changing environments, thus their characterization as “superorganisms made up of individuals who act in the interest of the whole. This book explores the fascinating world of honey bees in their struggle to obtain food and resources in the ecosystem and environment around the hive. Written by a team of international experts on honey bee behavior and ecology, this book covers current and historical knowledge, research methods and modeling used in the field of study and includes estimates of key parameters of energy utilization, quantities of materials collected, and identifies inconsistencies or gaps in current knowledge in the field. Establishes a basis of current knowledge on honeybees to build and advance understanding of their foraging behavior Addresses stressors such as habitat loss, climate change, pesticides, pests and diseases Presents concise concepts that facilitate direct traceability to the original underlying research

Book Synopsis Testing Effects of Alternative Diest on Reproduction Rates of the Small Hive Beetle, Aethina Tumida by :
Download or read book Testing Effects of Alternative Diest on Reproduction Rates of the Small Hive Beetle, Aethina Tumida written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The small hive beetle, Aethina tumida was exposed to several alternative food sources to test their ability of producing successive generations while exposed to these diets. Once it was determined that they could successfully produce successive generations while on these diets, further tests were performed to examine the effect of these alternative diets on rate of reproduction when compared to the more typical diet of honey bee resources. This was accomplished by counting the eggs produced per day on each of the given food sources. Beetles consistently produced greater numbers of eggs when exposed to the typical diet and lower numbers when exposed to an alternative diet. Because there were significantly greater numbers of eggs produced when exposed to the typical diet, it was determined that this diet was superior to any of the alternative diets but the beetles were able to successfully reproduce on alternative diets of banana, cantaloupe, pineapple, mango, and an artificial 'manduca' diet. Previous research has shown that small hive beetles can successfully be reared on the contents of bumble bee colonies (at least in laboratory settings) and adult beetles can at least sustain themselves on various fruits. This research confirms that the beetles are also capable of producing successive generations on fruit diets as well as artificial diets. These findings provide additional insight as to how the beetles may have entered the United States and their subsequent spread, as well as possible control measures.
