Book excerpt: This volume addresses an urgent need across multiple disciplines to broaden our understanding and use of response processes evidence of test validity. It builds on the themes and findings of the volume Validity and Validation in Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences (Zumbo & Chan, 2014), with a focus on measurement validity evidence based on response processes. Approximately 1000 studies are published each year examining the validity of inferences made from tests and measures in the social, behavioural, and health sciences. The widely accepted Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing (1999, 2014) present five sources of evidence for validity: content-related, response processes, internal structure, relationships with other variables, and consequences of testing. Many studies focus on internal structure and relationships with other variables sources of evidence, which have a long history in validation research, known methodologies, and numerous exemplars in the literature. Far less is understood by test users and researchers conducting validation work about how to think about and apply new and emerging sources of validity evidence. This groundbreaking volume is the first to present conceptual models of response processes, methodological issues that arise in gathering response processes evidence, as well as applications and exemplars for providing response processes evidence in validation work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Survey Development: A Theory-Driven Mixed Methods Approach provides both an overview of standard methods and tools for developing and validating surveys and a conceptual basis for survey development that advocates establishing and testing of hypotheses pertaining to presumptions and score-interpretation and use inferences and mixing quantitative and qualitative methods. The book has 14 chapters which are divided into four parts. Part A includes six chapters that deal with theory and methodology. Part B has five chapters and it gets into the process of constructing the survey using both quantitative and qualitative methods. Part C comprises two chapters devoted to assessing the quality or psychometric properties (reliability and validity) of survey responses. Finally, the one chapter in Part D is an attempt to present a synopsis of what was covered in the previous chapters in regard to developing a survey with the TDMM framework for developing survey and conducting survey research. This provides a full process for survey development intended to yield results that can support valid interpretation and use of scores. Including detailed online resources, this book is suitable for graduate students who use or are responsible for interpretation of survey research and survey data as well as survey methodologists and practitioners who use surveys in their field.

The book is the first systematic attempt to explore test-takers’ cognitive processes through the control of test methods, and presents findings in visualized form including processing route maps and eye fixation heat maps. It offers readers essential support with “digging into” and analyzing data that has to date remained difficult to access.

Book excerpt: This report documents indicators and instruments in the context of inquiry-based science education (IBSE). It is embedded in a project that aims at disseminating inquiry-based science teaching on a large scale across Europe. Recent research about IBSE is rather specific to individual research questions and focuses on single aspects of IBSE. Furthermore, the instruments and indicators underlying the different studies are predominately not systematically covered. In this report single indicators and instruments in the context of science education are brought together. Thereby a coherent database and a link to different research results are presented. The indicators and instruments in this report originate from a systematic literature review about IBSE from 2005-2009. To receive a comprehensive picture about research on IBSE the scope of this review contains instructional aspects (1), implementation areas of politics/stakeholders (2) and teacher education and teacher professional development (3). This report contributes to supplying a systematic overview about instruments and indicators in the field of IBSE. It addresses researchers, politicians and stakeholders, teacher educators and teachers who are interested in methods of research and dissemination in the context of science education and IBSE.
