Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electrical Circuit Theory and Technology is a fully comprehensive text for courses in electrical and electronic principles, circuit theory and electrical technology. The coverage takes students from the fundamentals of the subject, to the completion of a first year degree level course. Thus, this book is ideal for students studying engineering for the first time, and is also suitable for pre-degree vocational courses, especially where progression to higher levels of study is likely. John Bird's approach, based on 700 worked examples supported by over 1000 problems (including answers), is ideal for students of a wide range of abilities, and can be worked through at the student's own pace. Theory is kept to a minimum, placing a firm emphasis on problem-solving skills, and making this a thoroughly practical introduction to these core subjects in the electrical and electronic engineering curriculum. This revised edition includes new material on transients and laplace transforms, with the content carefully matched to typical undergraduate modules. Free Tutor Support Material including full worked solutions to the assessment papers featured in the book will be available at http://textbooks.elsevier.com/. Material is only available to lecturers who have adopted the text as an essential purchase. In order to obtain your password to access the material please follow the guidelines in the book.

Book excerpt: "Circuit theory is one of the most important tools of the electrical engineer, and it can be derived with suitable approximations from Maxwell's equations. Despite this, university courses treat electromagnetism and circuit theory as two separate subjects and at advanced level, students can lack a basic understanding of the classical electromagnetism applied in the context of electric circuits to fully appreciate and apply circuit theory and understand its limitations. Here the authors build on their graduate teaching experiences and lectures to treat these topics as a single subject and derive and present the important results from circuit analyses, such as Kirchhoff's laws and Ohm's law, using the ideas of the classical electromagnetism."--Prové de l'editor.

Twenty-two authorities at the leading edge of researchand development provide a solid grasp of circuit breaker design and performance... and that's knowledge you can put to work immediately!arcuit Interruption surpasses other books in completeness and currency-includingcoverage of the sulfur hexafluoride puffer, the vacuum breaker, and the low-voltagemolded-case breakers, that are taking the place of many older types. In addition to thelatest theories and techniques, this major volume examines promising future trends.More than 400 clear illustrations help make the text easy to follow, and over 620 keyreferences point the way to the best places for continuing study.Today, the field of circuit interruption is so diverse that a thorough single source reallystands out. arcuit Interruption is that- source, the perfect reference for electrical, electronic, power, and design engineers; and researchers investigating circuit breaker design, interaction of breakers and power circuits, power transmission, power distribution, circuit interruption, electric contacts, and gaseous conduction. Moreover, this exceptionalbook serves as an excellent source for practicing power engineers as well as an invaluablesupplement to graduate-level engineering courses in circuit interruption, transmission, and distribution of power . . . and a supplement in professional seminars and society/association courses.

Book excerpt: Theory of Oscillators presents the applications and exposition of the qualitative theory of differential equations. This book discusses the idea of a discontinuous transition in a dynamic process. Organized into 11 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the simplest type of oscillatory system in which the motion is described by a linear differential equation. This text then examines the character of the motion of the representative point along the hyperbola. Other chapters consider examples of two basic types of non-linear non-conservative systems, namely, dissipative systems and self-oscillating systems. This book discusses as well the discontinuous self-oscillations of a symmetrical multi-vibrator neglecting anode reaction. The final chapter deals with the immense practical importance of the stability of physical systems containing energy sources particularly control systems. This book is a valuable resource for electrical engineers, scientists, physicists, and mathematicians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a completely revised and rewritten edition of "Electric Contacts Handbook" published in 1958. A large number of new in vestigations are considered, and many of the basic theories are revised in detail and even in general. The body of information had to be limited as it was not advisable to increase the volume of the book. In particular, no attempt was made to cover all of the practical applications. They appear as examples following concentrated explanations of basic phenomena. As in several branches of technology, the solutions of problems ari sing in the field of electric contacts involve insight into various disci plines of physics. It is feit that reviews of some of those topics, especi ally adapted to electric contact phenomena, are welcome to many readers. For example, chapters have been devoted to the structure of carbon, the band theory of electric conduction in solids, certain pro blems in statistics, and the theory of the electric arc. As regards arc problems, new ideas have been introduced. In order to make the main text less cumbersome, such reviews are presented as appendices. Throughout this edition, the mksa-unit system is used in accord with the latest recommendation for standardization of units in scientific and technical writings. The chapter "History of Early Investigations on Contacts" forming Part IV in the preceding edition of 1958 has not been repeated in this book.

Book excerpt: University Physics is designed for the two- or three-semester calculus-based physics course. The text has been developed to meet the scope and sequence of most university physics courses and provides a foundation for a career in mathematics, science, or engineering. The book provides an important opportunity for students to learn the core concepts of physics and understand how those concepts apply to their lives and to the world around them. Due to the comprehensive nature of the material, we are offering the book in three volumes for flexibility and efficiency. Coverage and Scope Our University Physics textbook adheres to the scope and sequence of most two- and three-semester physics courses nationwide. We have worked to make physics interesting and accessible to students while maintaining the mathematical rigor inherent in the subject. With this objective in mind, the content of this textbook has been developed and arranged to provide a logical progression from fundamental to more advanced concepts, building upon what students have already learned and emphasizing connections between topics and between theory and applications. The goal of each section is to enable students not just to recognize concepts, but to work with them in ways that will be useful in later courses and future careers. The organization and pedagogical features were developed and vetted with feedback from science educators dedicated to the project. Book excerpt: The overarching aim of this open access book is to present self-contained theory and algorithms for investigation and prediction of electric demand peaks. A cross-section of popular demand forecasting algorithms from statistics, machine learning and mathematics is presented, followed by extreme value theory techniques with examples. In order to achieve carbon targets, good forecasts of peaks are essential. For instance, shifting demand or charging battery depends on correct demand predictions in time. Majority of forecasting algorithms historically were focused on average load prediction. In order to model the peaks, methods from extreme value theory are applied. This allows us to study extremes without making any assumption on the central parts of demand distribution and to predict beyond the range of available data. While applied on individual loads, the techniques described in this book can be extended naturally to substations, or to commercial settings. Extreme value theory techniques presented can be also used across other disciplines, for example for predicting heavy rainfalls, wind speed, solar radiation and extreme weather events. The book is intended for students, academics, engineers and professionals that are interested in short term load prediction, energy data analytics, battery control, demand side response and data science in general.
