Dar es Salaam, the former capital, retains most government offices and is the country's largest city, principal port, and leading commercial centre. Tanzania is a de facto one-party state with the democratic socialist Chama Cha Mapinduzi party in power. Tanzania is mountainous and densely forested in the north-east, where Mount Kilimanjaro is located. Three of Africa's Great Lakes are partly within Tanzania. To the north and west lie Lake Victoria, Africa's largest lake, and Lake Tanganyika, the continent's deepest lake, known for its unique species of fish. To the south lies Lake Malawi. The eastern shore is hot and humid, with the Zanzibar Archipelago just offshore. The Menai Bay Conservation Area is Zanzibar's largest marine protected area. The Kalambo Falls, located on the Kalambo River at the Zambian border, is the second-highest uninterrupted waterfall in Africa. Christianity is the largest religion in Tanzania, but there are also substantial Muslim and animist minorities. Over 100 different languages are spoken in Tanzania.

Der souveräne Staat Tansania ist eine konstitutionelle Präsidialrepublik und seit 1996 ist seine offizielle Hauptstadt Dodoma, wo sich das Büro des Präsidenten, die Nationalversammlung und alle Ministerien befinden. Dar es Salaam, die ehemalige Hauptstadt, hat die meisten Regierungsbüros und ist die größte Stadt des Landes, der Haupthafen und das führende Handelszentrum. Tansania ist de facto ein Einparteienstaat mit der demokratisch-sozialistischen Partei Chama Cha Mapinduzi an der Macht. Tansania ist gebirgig und im Nordosten dicht bewaldet, wo sich der Kilimandscharo befindet. Drei der Großen Seen Afrikas liegen teilweise in Tansania. Im Norden und Westen liegen der Viktoriasee, Afrikas größter See, und der Tanganjikasee, der tiefste See des Kontinents, der für seine einzigartigen Fischarten bekannt ist. Im Süden liegt der Malawisee. Die Ostküste ist heiß und feucht, mit dem Sansibar-Archipel direkt vor der Küste. Das Menai Bay Conservation Area ist Sansibars größtes Meeresschutzgebiet. Die Kalambo Falls, am Kalambo River an der Grenze zu Sambia gelegen, sind der zweithöchste ununterbrochene Wasserfall Afrikas. Das Christentum ist die größte Religion in Tansania, aber es gibt auch beträchtliche muslimische und animistische Minderheiten.
