Book excerpt: NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) has been involved in the research and development of high speed flywheel systems for small satellite energy storage and attitude control applications. One research and development area has been the minimization of the switching noise produced by the pulsed width modulated (PWM) inverter that drives the flywheel permanent magnet motor/generator (PM M/G). This noise can interfere with the flywheel M/G hardware and the system avionics hampering the full speed performance of the flywheel system. One way to attenuate the inverter switching noise is by placing an AC filter at the three phase output terminals of the inverter with the filter neutral point connected to the DC link (DC bus) midpoint capacitors. The main benefit of using an AC filter in this fashion is the significant reduction of the inverter s high dv/dt switching and its harmonics components. Additionally, common mode (CM) and differential mode (DM) voltages caused by the inverter s high dv/dt switching are also reduced. Several topologies of AC filters have been implemented and compared. One AC filter topology consists of a two-stage R-L-C low pass filter. The other topology consists of the same two-stage R-L-C low pass filter with a series connected trap filter (an inductor and capacitor connected in parallel). This paper presents the analysis, design and experimental results of these AC filter topologies and the comparison between the no filter case and conventional AC filter. Book excerpt: The NASA Glenn Research Center has been developing technology to enable the use of high speed flywheel energy storage units in future spacecraft for the last several years. An integral part of the flywheel unit is the three phase motor/generator that is used to accelerate and decelerate the flywheel. The motor/generator voltage is supplied from a pulse width modulated (PWM) inverter operating from a fixed DC voltage supply. The motor current is regulated through a closed loop current control that commands the necessary voltage from the inverter to achieve the desired current. The current regulation loop is the innermost control loop of the overall flywheel system and, as a result, must be fast and accurate over the entire operating speed range (20,000 to 60,000 rpm) of the flywheel. The voltage applied to the motor is a high frequency PWM version of the DC bus voltage that results in the commanded fundamental value plus higher order harmonics. Most of the harmonic content is at the switching frequency and above. The higher order harmonics cause a rapid change in voltage to be applied to the motor that can result in large voltage stresses across the motor windings. In addition, the high frequency content in the motor causes sensor noise in the magnetic bearings that leads to disturbances for the bearing control. To alleviate these problems, a filter is used to present a more sinusoidal voltage to the motor/generator. However, the filter adds additional dynamics and phase lag to the motor system that can interfere with the performance of the current regulator. This paper will discuss the tuning methodology and results for the motor/generator current regulator and the impact of the filter on the control. Results at speeds up to 50,000 rpm are presented.

Book excerpt: PWM inverters are widely used in industrial, commercial and residential application such as motor drives. In three-leg inverters for three-phase applications the occurrence of common mode voltage is inherent due to asymmetrical output pulses. It has been found that the high dv/dt and high switching frequency together with the common mode voltages generated by PWM inverters have caused many adverse effects such as shaft voltage, bearing current, leakage current, motor terminal over voltage and electromagnetic interference (EMI). The EMI generated by such systems is increasingly causing concerns, as the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) regulations become more stringent. In order to comply with these international EMC regulations, an EMI filter is often necessary. The major objective of this book is to investigate and suppress of the adverse effects of PWM inverters. Theoretical analysis of all the adverse effects is presented in this book. Several passive and active EMI filters and their design procedures are proposed and performed. The experimental results of applying these novel filters are presented.

This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) are usually controlled using two-level inverters. The output voltage of the inverter is in the form of the switching pulses between the positive DC-bus voltage and the negative DC-bus voltage. Such voltage waveforms have several adverse effects on the motor. These include, higher stress on winding insulation, higher eddy current losses and acoustic noise. Thus, to overcome these problems, different types of filters, typically LC-filters are used between the inverter and motor terminals to smooth the pulse width modulation (PWM) output voltages of the motor drives. Theoretically, the inductance and capacitance used for the filters are considered identical in each phase. However, in a practical scenario, it is difficult to have identical filter elements for all three phases. This non-ideal condition of filter elements amongst the three phases is considered as filter unbalance. This thesis investigates the impacts of filter unbalance on the PMSM drive system. Specifically, a comprehensive model of the motor drive system considering filter unbalance is proposed and developed at first. With the developed model, conventional field oriented control (FOC) is implemented to investigate the impact of this filter unbalance. A range of filter parameter variation and the corresponding impact on the motor drive including the motor current, torque and speed ripples is then studied in detail. Thereafter, the results obtained from the proposed model are validated through both circuit simulations and experimental tests. Based on the investigation results, this thesis will discuss the allowable parameter variation in the LC filters to limit the motor performance deterioration within the required bounds, which will be beneficial to engineering practice in motor drive area. In addition, this investigation shows that a conventional FOC with proportional integral (PI) controller might not be capable of mitigating the negative impact on the motor due to filter unbalance, for example, the negative sequence current. Therefore, this thesis implemented an adaptive proportional resonant (PR) controller to address negative sequence current and the corresponding impacts. A detailed mathematical framework to develop this proposed controller will also be presented in the thesis. Finally, the proposed adaptive PR controller is extensively evaluated on a laboratory PMSM drive system under different operating conditions.

This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis studies two types of medium-voltage (MV) vector controlled PWM induction motor drives for long motor feeder applications, namely voltage source and current source based drives. As rectifiers and inverters are the main elements in any drive system, both are investigated, but with more emphasis on the inverter side. MV PWM current source rectifiers (CSR) usually use selective harmonic elimination as a modulating strategy which provides good harmonic reduction at a low switching frequency. The rectifier performance does not meet the IEEE 519 regulation concerning harmonics injected into the supply current. Two solutions are presented. First, line side passive filters for harmonic mitigation and power factor improvement. Second, shunt active power filters based on p-q theory, with a step-down high-frequency transformer. The presented solutions are compared to highlight their features and limitations. Several topologies can be used for PWM CSRs. A detailed study of the selection criteria for PWM CSR semiconductors is presented based on losses, physical size, and number of series devices. Utilization of a PWM voltage source inverter (VSI) drive system in long motor feeder applications leads to motor terminal over-voltage problems. Surge filters are used to mitigate this phenomenon. Among the various types of filters, the motor terminal RC filter and the inverter output RLC filter are common. A detailed investigation is presented of the effects of these filters on the VSI drive system. PWM current source inverter (CSI) drive systems are characterised by their motor friendly voltage behaviour and controlled short circuit capabilities. Therefore, a proposed indirect vector controlled PWM CSI drive is presented for long motor feeder applications. Performance comparison between PWM VSI and CSI drive systems for long motor feeder applications is performed to clarify features and limitations of each system. Motor voltage is needed for speed estimation but measurement of voltage/speed is impractical for long motor feeder drives. A model reference adaptive system speed estimator is proposed with a novel remote motor voltage calculator that depends on the inverter voltage and feeder parameters. Offset and drift problems that occur during the flux estimation process are solved by a proposed DC-offset eliminator.
