Book excerpt: Invertebrate Tissue Culture, Volume II presents the organ cultures of various invertebrates. This book discusses the use of cell and organ cultures in genetics, physiology, and pathology. Organized into three parts encompassing 11 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the factors necessary for the normal development of embryonic or imaginal rudiments. This text then examines the organ culture technique, which is a means of studying the correlations that may exist between various organs as they can be made to act on one another in the same medium independently of any other factor. Other chapters consider a detailed analysis of the utilization of organ culture in pathology. This book discusses as well the three major successive aspects of mollusk organ cultures. The final chapter provides information on cell lines from 35 species of insects from various orders and from one species of mollusk. This book is a valuable resource for biologists, pathologists, and physiologists.

Book excerpt: Organ Culture provides information pertinent to the fundamental aspects of the study of autodifferentiation. This book discusses the physiological differentiation, the action of substances that inhibit or stimulate growth, and the interactions of associated organs. Organized into 10 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the differentiation of embryonic organs in natural media. This text then presents the study of differentiation in synthetic solid or liquid media and explains the biochemical and physiological requirements of the tissues. Other chapters consider the problems of sexual differentiation and intersexuality in vitro by providing a comparative study of avian and mammalian embryos. This book analyzes as well the interactions between hormones, inhibitor substances, and receptor organs in vitro. The final chapter deals with the study of organ chimeras in vitro and the related study of the organ culture of malignant tumors. This book is a valuable resource for embryologists and research workers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Invertebrate Tissue Culture: Research Applications covers the broad field and status of basic research in invertebrate tissue culture. This book particularly discusses invertebrate cell growth and differentiation, cloning of established cell lines, the breakthrough in molluscan tissue culture, and the establishment of the first snail line. It also highlights topics on invertebrate endocrinology and ecdysone biosynthesis in vitro. This text describes the identification of distinct juvenile hormones from corpora allata and the production of peptide neurohormones by cultured insect brains. Some chapters elucidate the use of Drosophila discs in vitro to study gene activity sites, as well as the applications of insect tissue culture to the study of intracellular parasites, symbionts, and arboviruses. Discussions on insect pathogenic viruses in insect cell lines, extraneous contaminants in invertebrate cell cultures, uses of invertebrate cells in plant pathology, and a description of invertebrate cell lines complete this volume. This reference will be valuable to microbiologists, parasitologists, virologists, entomologists, geneticists, and medical researchers working in the field and to graduate students in related fields of biomedical research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I started insect cell culture work in 1962, when T. D. C. Grace reported the first establishment of invertebrate continuous cell lines. He obtained grow ing cells from pupal ovaries of the emperor gum moth, Antheraea euca lypti. At that time, I was trying to obtain growing cells from leafhoppers. Grace's method could not be applied directly to my culture because of the differences in species, the size of the insects, and the tissue to be cul tured. The vertebrate tissue culture methods gave me some ideas for pre paring cultures from leafhoppers, but those could not be used directly either. There were no textbooks and no manuals for invertebrate tissue culture, so I had to develop a method by myself. First, I considered what type and what size of vessels are suitable for insect tissue culture. Also, I had to look for suitable materials to construct the culture vessels. Sec ond, I had to examine various culture media, especially growth-promot ing substances, such as sera. Then I had to improve culture media by trial and error. The procedure to set up a primary culture was also a problem. How could I sterilize materials? How could I remove tissues from a tiny insect? How many tissues should I pool in order to set up one culture? I had to find out the answers. Naturally, it took a lot of time.

The book discusses the biology of trematodes of the genus Paragonimus that occur in the Americas; the milky disease of beetles; and the biochemical exploration in insect pathology. The text describes the application of invertebrate tissue culture to the in vitro study of animal parasites; and the use of hydra-hydramoeba as a model system for the study of epizootic processes. The aspects of the biology of nudibranchs are reviewed, with emphasis on nudibranchs as members of associations, including functional morphology, physiology, utilization of host pigments and nematocysts, life history, behavior, defensive mechanisms, and ecology. Chemists, bacteriologists, parasitologists, invertebrate pathologists, immunologists, and protozoologists will find the book invaluable.

Book excerpt: Reproduction of Marine Invetebrates, Volume IV Molluscs: Gastropods and Cephalopods describes the wide range of structural complexity and diverse modes of reproduction of gastropods and cephalopods. Each chapter discusses the asexual reproduction, sexual reproduction capacity, and developmental stages of different group of gastropods and cephalopods, including prosobranchia, opisthobranchia, pulmonata, nautiloidea, decapoda, and octopoda. Gastropods are among the most conspicuous sea animals, and species of limpets, snails, and slugs are found in all marine habitats. Cephalopods are active and important marine predators, ranging from archaic nautiloids to more recent pelagic decapods and benthic octopods, which are often considered to be one of the apexes of invertebrate evolution. They are all gonochoric and reproduce only by sexual means. All have intricate courtship behavior and derived developmental patterns. Marine biologists and researchers, scientists, and developmental biologists will find this book invaluable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapid advances in knowledge have led to an increasing interest in neuro biology over the last several years. These advances have been made possible, at least in part, by the use of increasingly sophisticated methodology. Furthermore, research in the most rapidly advancing areas is essentially multidisciplinary and is characterized by contributions from many investi gators employing a variety of techniques. While a grasp of fundamental neurobiological concepts is an obvious prerequisite for those who wish to follow or participate in this field, critical awareness and evaluation of neurobiological research also requires an understanding of sophisticated methodologies. The objective of Methods in Neurobiology is the development of such critical abilities. The reader is exposed to the basic concepts, principles, and instrumentation of key methodologies, and the application of each meth odology is placed in the special context of neurobiological research. The reader will gain familiarity with the terminology and procedures of each method and the ability to evaluate results in light of the particular features of neurobiological preparations and applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Cell Culture, Volume 7 is a compilation of research papers in the field of cell culture. The contributions reflect the applications of in vitro techniques of cell culture to biotechnology, reviewing the advantages and disadvantages of the methods. This volume covers the cultivation of fish and crustacean cells; gene transfer in insect cells; and the study of bacterial protein toxins using vertebrate cells. The fusion of plant protoplasts by electromanipulation; anther and microspore cultivation; gene transfer to induce morphogenesis; formation of phenolic compounds in cells and tissues in vitro; and new media and culture systems for the large-scale production of insect cells are discussed as well. Also included in the book is a biographical sketch of the 1986 Nobel Laureate Rita Levi-Montalcini, the developmental biologist who identified the nerve growth factor (NGF), a protein that is necessary for the growth, development, and maintenance of nerve cells in the peripheral nervous system and, apparently, also in the brain. Cell biologists and researchers who use in vitro techniques will find the book highly informative and insightful.
