Book excerpt: This volume contains the Greek text, textual apparatus, and first published English translation of two treatises on rhetoric, with introductory material and notes. Once attributed to Hermogenes of Tarsus, these treatises are now believed to be by unknown authors writing in the second or third century C.E. or later. The first treatise, entitled On Invention, is a handbook for students providing formulas to aid them in the composition of declamations on assigned themes. The second treatise, On the Method of Forcefulness, discusses prose style with special attention to figures of speech. Extensive notes interpret the often-difficult content and relate it to other writing on rhetoric. The Greek text is that of Hugo Rabe (1913).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book talks about idea-generating techniques and creativity tools from historical, critical and personal perspective, shows the relationship between them, and illustrates them with numerous simple and more complex examples and drawings, including actual patented inventions. The techniques vary from systematic to random. The book also shows the application of such techniques to problem-solving, from quirky puzzles to practical applications. It shows the relationship between the natural world, art, and invention. It touches on the patenting process. Some specific topics include constrained creativity, jury-rigging MacGyver style, lateral thinking, and taking advantage of old sources. For example, penicillin could have been discovered much earlier if people paid attention to their predecessors. This book should be useful to engineers, scientists, students, inventors, as well as everyday problem solvers and tinkerers.

A central theme is the importance of using the problem-solution paradigm to identify the "inventive concept" before the claim-drafting begins. The book's teachings are grounded in "old school" principles of patent practice that, before now, have been learned only on the job from supervisors and mentors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Invention in Rhetoric and Composition examines issues that have surrounded historical and contemporary theories and pedagogies of rhetorical invention, citing a wide array of positions on these issues in both primary rhetorical texts and secondary interpretations. It presents theoretical disagreements over the nature, purpose, and epistemology of invention and pedagogical debates over such issues as the relative importance of art, talent, imitation, and practice in teaching discourse. After a discussion of treatments of invention from the Sophists to the nineteenth century, Invention in Rhetoric and Composition introduces a range of early twentieth-century multidisciplinary theories and calls for invention's awakening in the field of English studies. It then showcases inventional theories and pedagogies that have emerged in the field of Rhetoric and Composition over the last four decades, including the ensuing research, critiques, and implementations of this inventional work. As a reference guide, the text offers a glossary of terms, an annotated bibliography of selected texts, and an extensive bibliography. Janice M. Lauer is Professor of English, Emerita at Purdue University, where she was the Reece McGee Distinguished Professor of English. In 1998, she received the College Composition and Communication Conference's Exemplar Award. Her publications include Four Worlds of Writing: Inquiry and Action in Context, Composition Research: Empirical Designs, and New Perspectives on Rhetorical Invention, as well as essays on rhetorical invention, disciplinarity, writing as inquiry, composition pedagogy, historical rhetoric, and empirical research.

Whenever someone says, I wish there were a better way to do this, then you have an opportunity for an invention. All you need to do is identify a solution, make it a reality, and then promote your method. The more you cultivate these abilities, the better youll become at inventing. With this guide to inventing, youll learn how to: identify areas where an invention could solve a problem; develop the mindset, motivation, and determination to develop inventions; navigate cost factors in the invention process; and improve upon inventions that already exist. Kannankeril also emphasizes how important it is to believe you have what it takes to solve problems. Many inventors make great contributions simply by modifying objects that they handle every day to their liking. Filled with stories from the authors own experiences as an inventor, this practical and entertaining guide to inventing explores how an inventors mind works and how to find The Inventor in You.
