Download or read book The Misfits written by James Howe and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kids who get called the worst names oftentimes find each other. That's how it was with us. Skeezie Tookis and Addie Carle and Joe Bunch and me. We call ourselves the Gang of Five, but there are only four of us. We do it to keep people on their toes. Make 'em wonder. Or maybe we do it because we figure that there's one more kid out there who's going to need a gang to be a part of. A misfit, like us. Skeezie, Addie, Joe, and Bobby -- they've been friends forever. They laugh together, have lunch together, and get together once a week at the Candy Kitchen to eat ice cream and talk about important issues. Life isn't always fair, but at least they have each other -- and all they really want to do is survive the seventh grade. That turns out to be more of a challenge than any of them had anticipated. Starting with Addie's refusal to say the Pledge of Allegiance and her insistence on creating a new political party to run for student council, the Gang of Five is in for the ride of their lives. Along the way they will learn about politics and popularity, love and loss, and what it means to be a misfit. After years of getting by, they are given the chance to stand up and be seen -- not as the one-word jokes their classmates have tried to reduce them to, but as the full, complicated human beings they are just beginning to discover they truly are.

Book Synopsis The Intuitive Mind by : Eugene Sadler-Smith
Download or read book The Intuitive Mind written by Eugene Sadler-Smith and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2010-06-15 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new agenda for the managerial mind will change the way you think and do business. Eugene Sadler-Smith, a leading intuition researcher and educator in business and management, argues that human beings have one brain but two minds – analytical and intuitive. Management has overlooked the importance of intuition, and under-exploited the potential that the intuitive mind has to contribute in areas as diverse as decision making, creativity, team working, entrepreneurship, business ethics and leadership. “The Intuitive Mind is a fascinating and practical book that will maximize your intuition and help you make better decisions today and predictions about tomorrow! Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung would most assuredly approve.” Steve W. Martin, www.heavyhitterwisdom.com Heavy Hitter Sales Psychology: How to Penetrate the C-Level Executive Suite and Convince Company Leaders to Buy “Eugene Sadler-Smith gives needed attention to the intuitive way of thinking and reminds us that leadership is an art as well as a science.” Cindi Fukami, Professor of Management, University of Denver, USA “From one of our prominent ‘thinkers’ in the management education arena, we learn in The Intuitive Mind how to use our intuitive judgment to improve our managerial decision making.” Joe Raelin, The Knowles Chair for Practice-Oriented Education, Northeastern University, USA “This timely, well researched and accessible book takes intuition out of the shadows and provides practical guidance to solve thorny problems.” Sebastian Bailey, Global Product Director, The Mind Gym
Download or read book Psychology written by Richard Malott and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013-11 with total page 698 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Malott and Whaley's Psychology may be the only general psych book that covers the full range of intro psych topics but all from a rigorous, behavior-analytic view, without compromise. And though it's intellectually rigorous, Malott and Whaley wrote this book so introductory psych students can understand it, learn from it, and appreciate both general psych and behavior analysis. The authors created an illustrative story line with fictional characters who later play a major role in Malott's Principles of Behavior. Furthermore, Edward Badajos' art work may be the most thoughtful, creative work in any intro text; and though at first glance, it's simply 1970's, underground-hip, cool, and creative, in reading the book it will became clear that the art is amazingly illustrative of the behavior-analytic/psychology concepts and story line (yes, you have to read it to appreciate it).
Book Synopsis The Music in the Data by : Christopher White
Download or read book The Music in the Data written by Christopher White and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-28 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Putting forward an extensive new argument for a humanities-based approach to big-data analysis, The Music in the Data shows how large datasets of music, or music corpora, can be productively integrated with the qualitative questions at the heart of music research. The author argues that as well as providing objective evidence, music corpora can themselves be treated as texts to be subjectively read and creatively interpreted, allowing new levels of understanding and insight into music traditions. Each chapter in this book asks how we define a core music-theory topic, such as style, harmony, meter, function, and musical key, and then approaches the topic through considering trends within large musical datasets, applying a combination of quantitative analysis and qualitative interpretation. Throughout, several basic techniques of data analysis are introduced and explained, with supporting materials available online. Connecting the empirical information from corpus analysis with theories of musical and textual meaning, and showing how each approach can enrich the other, this book provides a vital perspective for scholars and students in music theory, musicology, and all areas of music research.

Book Synopsis The Origin and Diversification of Language by : Morris Swadesh
Download or read book The Origin and Diversification of Language written by Morris Swadesh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-04 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Morris Swadesh, one of this century's foremost scientific investigators of language, dedicated much of his life to the study of the origin and evolution of language. This volume, left nearly completed at his death and edited posthumously by Joel F. Sherzer, is his last major study of this difficult subject.Swadesh discusses the simple qualities of human speech also present in animal language, and establishes distinctively human techniques of expression by comparing the common features that are found in modern and ancient languages. He treats the diversification of language not only by isolating root words in different languages, but also by dealing with sound systems, with forms of composition, and with sentence structure. In so doing, he demonstrates the evidence for the expansion of all language from a single central area. Swadesh supports his hypothesis by ""exhibits"" that conveniently present the evidence in tabular form. Further clarity is provided by the use of a suggestive practical phonetic system, intelligible to the student as well as to the professional. The book also contains an Appendix, in which the distinguished ethnographer of language, Dell Hymes, gives a valuable account of the prewar linguistic tradition within which Swadesh did some of his most important work.
Book Synopsis Quantum Social Theory for Critical International Relations Theorists by : Michael P. A. Murphy
Download or read book Quantum Social Theory for Critical International Relations Theorists written by Michael P. A. Murphy and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-11-13 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the crossroads of quantum and critical approaches to International Relations and argues that these approaches share a common project of uncovering complexity and uncertainty. The “quantum turn” in International Relations theory has produced a number of interesting insights into the complex ways in which our assumptions about the physics of the world around us can limit our understanding of social life. While critique is possible within a Newtonian social science, core assumptions of separability and determinism of classical physics impose limits on what is imaginable. The author argues that by adopting a quantum imaginary, social theory can move beyond its Newtonian limits, and explore two methods for quantizing conceptual models—translation and application. This book is the first introductory book to quantum social theory ideas specifically intended for an audience of critical International Relations.
Download or read book Life and Living written by Larry Wharton and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2019-09-26 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life and Living: Thoughts on Nearly Everything is about just that---nearly everything. Whatever happens to interest me at the time gets attention. But diverse as the chapters are, there is one guiding theme. We live our lives better and more fully if we understand ourselves and our needs, acting to improve both our own well being, and that of others. The book’s diversity helps us see ourselves and the world from multiple, often challenging, perspectives. But my hope is that these different views will stimulate an appreciation of aspects of the world and human behavior not seen or understood before. To this end, my opinions will be gently provocative.
Book Synopsis Intuitive Interpreting by : Annalisa Nash Fernandez
Download or read book Intuitive Interpreting written by Annalisa Nash Fernandez and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-14 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: **Second edition with Coronavirus terminology.** A medical dictionary re-engineered for quick reference of highly technical terms! This specialized resource is the only interpreter's dictionary that leverages Spanish fluency and language intuition with a functional approach that excludes the bulk of familiar lexicon and adds technical terms found only in voluminous dictionaries. Intuitive Interpreting is not an interpreter training guide or manual for health care providers multitasking as interpreters. The abridged format excludes cognate forms of words such as "infection-infección", and common terms such as "cough" or "hot". Instead it is abridged to include only a shortlist of terms such as "whooping cough - tos ferina" and "hot flashes - sofocos," and even highly technical terminology, and newer Covid19 vocabulary, not found in modern medical dictionaries. This highly functional format is targeted to the experienced interpreter in need of only technically specific and esoteric lexicon.Designed to be incomplete, the dictionary section is limited to the 1,000 words an experienced interpreter needs. Included are glossaries by medical specialty, and guides to false cognates and the specifics of interpreter protocol. Sections on Greek and Latin based prefixes, and cognate stems, complete this niche resource. Intuitive Interpreting is the only dictionary that is practical on-the-job, where digital applications may be blocked, and complete medical dictionaries are too cumbersome. This is the only terminology resource a professional medical interpreter needs to work effectively in EnglishSpanish. Attach it to your clipboard and handle obscure medical terminology discreetly and efficiently.Authored by a nationally certified medical interpreter, for practicing interpreters.
