Book Synopsis Embellishing the Liturgy by : Alejandro Enrique Planchart
Download or read book Embellishing the Liturgy written by Alejandro Enrique Planchart and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the imposition of Gregorian chant upon most of Europe by the authority of the Carolingian kings and emperors in the eighth and ninth centuries, a large number of repertories arose in connection with the new chant and its liturgy. Of these repertories, the tropes, together with the sequences, represent the main creative activity of European musicians in the ninth, tenth, and eleventh centuries. Because they were not an absolutely official part of the liturgy, as was Gregorian chant, they reflect local traditions, particularly in terms of melody, and more so than the new pieces that were composed at the time. In addition, the earlier layers of tropes represent, in many cases, a survival of the pre local pre Gregorian melodic traditions. This volume provides an introduction to the study of tropes in the form of an extensive anthology of major studies and a comprehensive bibliography and constitutes a classic reference resource for the study of one of the most important musico-liturgical genres of the central middle ages.

Book Synopsis The Complete Book of 1970s Broadway Musicals by : Dan Dietz

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1970s was an exciting decade for musical theatre. Besides shows from legends Stephen Sondheim (Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, and Sweeney Todd) and Andrew Lloyd Webber (Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita), old-fashioned musicals (Annie) and major revivals (No, No, Nanette) became hits. In addition to underappreciated shows like Over Here! and cult musicals such as The Grass Harp and Mack and Mabel, Broadway audiences were entertained by black musicals on the order of The Wiz and Raisin. In The Complete Book of 1970s Broadway Musicals, Dan Dietz examines in detail every musical that opened on Broadway during the 1970s. In addition to including every hit and flop that debuted during the decade, this book highlights revivals and personal-appearance revues with such performers as Tony Bennett, Lena Horne, Bette Midler, and Gilda Radner. Each entry includes the following information: Opening and closing dates Plot summaries Cast members Number of performances Names of all important personnel including writers, composers, directors, choreographers, producers, and musical directors Musical numbers and the names of performers who introduced the songs Production data, including information about tryouts Source material Critical commentary Tony awards and nominations Details about London and other foreign productions Besides separate entries for each production, the book offers numerous appendixes, including a discography, filmography, and published scripts, as well as lists of Gilbert and Sullivan operettas, black-themed shows, and Jewish-themed productions. A treasure trove of information, The Complete Book of 1970s Broadway Musicals provides readers with a comprehensive view of each show. This significant resource will be of use to scholars, historians, and casual fans of one of the greatest decades in musical theatre history.
Book Synopsis Sacred Sound and Social Change by : Lawrence A. Hoffman
Download or read book Sacred Sound and Social Change written by Lawrence A. Hoffman and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 1993-01-31 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teachers, students, composers, performers, and other practitioners of sacred sound will appreciate this volume because, unlike any book currently available on sacred music, it treats the history, development, current practices, composition, and critical views of the liturgical music of both the Jewish and Christian traditions. Contributors trace Jewish music from its place in Hebrew Scriptures through the nineteenth-century Reform movement. Similar accounts of Christian music describe its growth up to the Protestant Reformation, as well as post-Reformation development. Other essays explore liturgical music in contemporary North America by analyzing it against the backdrop of the continuous social change that characterizes our era.

Book excerpt: Interest in Gregorian chant has always been alive among musicologists and those devoted to preserving early church music in all its haunting simplicity. Willi Apel's extensive survey of the chant describes the evolutionary processes of its long history as well as its definition and terminology, the structure of the liturgy, the texts, the notation, the rhythm, the tonality, and the methods and forms of psalmody. Under the heading "Stylistic Analysis" it offers chapters on liturgical recitative, the free compositions according to types, Ambrosian chant (by Roy Jesson), and Old-Roman chant (by Robert J. Snow). A short conclusion, titled "Prolegomena to a History of Gregorian Style," completes this impressive volume. Book jacket.

Represented here are articles on the Kyrie, the introit tropes of St-Gall, an elegy for William the Conqueror (d. 1087), the versus by Venantius Fortunatus for the cathedral of Paris, the liturgical dramas of Fleury, early organum, the Mass of Tournai, and, finally, the Requiem by Eustache Du Caurroy.
Book Synopsis Chant and Notation in South Italy and Rome before 1300 by : John Boe
Download or read book Chant and Notation in South Italy and Rome before 1300 written by John Boe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fifteen studies assembled here grew out of research on south-Italian ordinary chants and tropes for the multi-volume series Beneventanum Troporum Corpus II, edited by John Boe in collaboration with Alejandro Planchart. In the present essays, clerical and ordinary chants and tropes of the Mass (especially when derived from paraliturgical hymns and poems), certain aspects of chant notation and particular facets of the old Beneventan and the old Roman chant repertories are examined in relation to the three main cultic centres of the Italian south - Benevento, Montecassino and Rome - and as they relate to their European context, namely Frankish and Norman chant and the varieties of chant sung in Italy north of Rome. The volume includes one previously unpublished study, on the Roman introit Salus Populi.
