Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to Zoology: A Guide to the Study of Animals; For the Use of Secondary Schools The aim of this book is first of all to lead young people to an acquaintance with the principal kinds of animals, especially as they are found in nature. Consequently little stress is laid on anatomy, although anatomy is, it is true, the basis of our present classification of animals. More stress is laid on the relation of organisms to environ ment - ec'ology or bionomics - and to man. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Zoology: An Introduction to the Study of Animals for Secondary Schools and Academies This volume is not intended to add anything to the science of Zoology. It is not for the investigator, it is for the beginner. The author has found that laboratory guides are as a rule too dry and conventional to accomplish the best results and he has accordingly attempted to make these directions simple and suggestive as well as comprehensive. The plan of these studies was worked out in the Manual Training High School, Kansas City, Mo., where it was thoroughly tested with students of all grades of the high school. The book has also been tested in two Normal Schools and in several high schools and has been found to warrant the claims made for it. Information about animals comes to the child from three sources, viz.: from a study of the animal itself, from a study of the environment, from reference books and lectures by the teacher. This book emphasizes the first and second of these sources and it is expected that the teacher will see that the third is not neglected. The author has gleaned from so many sources that it would be impossible to acknowledge them all, but he desires to make special mention of the assistance of his associate, Mr. A. N. Young, on the Branch Vermes and on various other parts of the book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Agriculture to Zoology: Information Literacy in the Life Sciences sets the stage for purposefully integrating information literacy activities within the subject-specific content of the life sciences. The book is written for librarians and other professionals who teach information literacy skills, especially those in the science disciplines, and most especially the life sciences. It is also intended to be helpful to secondary school teachers, college faculty who teach life science-related subjects, library school students, and others interested in information literacy and science education. The book’s seven chapters fill a gap with varying perspectives of literacy instruction in the life sciences and include resources identified by academic librarians as important for use in subject-specific research in higher education. Contributors are longtime specialists in the fields of the life sciences, science and information literacy, scientific and electronic communication, assessment, and more, including Arctic and Antarctic information. Book Synopsis Introduction to the Study of Animal Populations by : H.G.. Andrewartha

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In revising this book I have tried to bring the theory of environment up to date in the light of certain important criticisms that have appeared since 1961, especially in papers by T. O. Browning and D. A. Maelzer, and in the light of experience gained while using the book as a text for an undergraduate course in population ecology in the University of Adelaide. As a consequence the order in which the argument is pre sented has been altered. Some new material has been introduced to expand the discussion of certain topics, especially resources, pathogens, aggressors and territorial behaviour. But the general approach to the subject and the general theory remains very much the same as in the first edition. I am grateful to Professor F. Fenner and Dr F. N. Ratcliffe and to Cambridge University Press for permission to reproduce Fig. 5.04; to Professor D. O. Chitty and the Ecological Society of Australia for permission to reproduce Fig. 5.05 (with minor modifications); Fig. 3.03 has been modified from a figure in a paper by H. G. Andrewartha and T. O. Browning first published in the Journal of Experimental Biology. Adelaide, 1970 H. G. A. xi Preface to the First Edition My interest in animal ecology was first aroused by reading Elton's Animal Ecology. His definition of the scope of ecology which I quote in section 1.0 is still the best that I have met.
