Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This philosophy book is a perfect introduction for anyone interested in the subject. The central theme of the book is discussion of the big questions (the "Problems" of the title) which philosophy strives to answer. There are other philosophy books with similar titles, including an identically titled book by the famous philosopher Bertrand Russell (also available from Forgotten Books and well worth a look), but this one contains arguably the best introduction to the broadest range of philosophical thought. John Grier Hibben, was broadly educated and seemed to excel at anything he turned his hand to. He graduated as a mathematician, earned a living teaching French and German and was for many years a widely respected preacher. After gaining a PhD he taught philosophy at Princeton and later became its president. The first two chapters of this book discuss the nature and value of philosophy. In the words of Hibben, "Philosophy is concerned with what is, in contrast with that which seems to be." The grand Problem then is to "discover the nature of reality." The other chapters cover discussions of existence, origins, the soul (whether as in the religious meaning or the sum of a consciousness), knowledge, logic, ethics (and it's sub-Problem, politics, or human relations) and finally of art and aesthetics. These are all covered in detail and with a great explanation, comparison and discussion of the different schools of thought, which is what makes this book so fascinating as an introduction to philosophy. If this book has a flaw it is that the different forms of religious thought are given too much attention in comparison to other philosophies, which may not be so interesting for the less religious times in which we now live. There is still plenty here for even the most ardent atheist however. The beauty of the writing is that even though the author is obviously deeply intelligent and knowledgeable about his topic the text remains accessible and the explanations clear and jargon-free. First of all, I wish to express my gratitude that the little book has been considered worthy of being presented to the English speaking world in their own tongue. I should like to add, furthermore, that I am greatly indebted to English and American thinkers for inspiration and suggestion which I regard of the highest value. Herbert Spencer taught me to think genetically and from William James, whose recent untimely death fills us all with profound sorrow, I got the idea of making psychological analysis the basis of my philosophical investigations. And in the new pragmatic method, which likewise originated in America, I have found a theory to which I had been led independently by my own investigations even before hearing of its American exponents. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Philosophy The Introduction to Philosophy which I here offer to the public gives a general view of philosophical problems and explains the tendencies of the various attempts to solve them. It seeks to provoke the reader to think over the great problems of life. It is in no sense an introduction to a special philosophical system, but it makes a very Wide survey of all the possibilities in the way of solutions. Naturally, it is based upon the author's personal view, as the student of philosophy will easily perceive; but this will not be pressed, or suffered to influence the author's judgment in appraising other systems of thought. In View of the aim of the work I have not found it necessary to burden it with literary references to the historic systems to which reference is made in its pages. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Philosophy of Science Recent years have witnessed the publication of a large number of monographs, magazine articles, and books, whose subject matter has seemed to defy classification. Though they have been written, for the greater part, by scientists, they are not properly scientific. They begin with science, they talk about science, and they end with science, yet they do not conform at all to the tradition of scientific writings. Were it not for the fact that they differ in important ways from the usual books on logic they might be placed in this class. Yet they are not logical in the usual sense. Their repeated reference to philosophical issues tempts one to classify them with this group, yet the writings approach these problems in a new spirit and with a new method, which seem quite foreign to the traditional philosophy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to the Study of Chemical Philosophy In the direction of thermo-chemical investigation great progress has been made but much yet remains to be done in this department of the science before the full significance of the observed facts will become manifest. Partly on this ground, and partly because the subject could not be treated in an instructive manner without making very extensive additions to the book, I have preferred to omit, for the present, a description of the experimental methods and all but the most obvious conclusions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Republic of Plato, Book X: Edited as an Introduction to the Study of Plato's Philosophy The Editor feels that he must justify himself to those who may use this book, as well for producing what is intended to serve as an Introduction to the study of Plato's Philosophy, as for the particular selection made. Dr. J owett in the preface which he has written to Mr. Purves' Selections from Plato discourages the pre mature study of philosophy. Sooner or later, how ever, the higher classical education leads those who follow after it into the loftier regions of metaphysics, where a guide or, in the last resource, a guide-book is indispensable. It is in the humbler capacity that this book offers itself, for so wide is the ground covered by Platonic literature 1 that, undirected, the explorer may soon lose himself. Nor is the Editor acquainted with any other book which definitely proposes to help the beginner. He could have wished that some one of riper knowledge had undertaken to do so, but he feels himself to possess for the task at least one qualification - a due estimate of his own powers as compared with great Platonists, past and present, which has constantly dissuaded departure from the beaten track.
