Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: E. G. Baron's Study of the Lute (Untersuchung des Instruments der Lauten) published in 1727, is one of the most comprehensive and important lute treatises in the 300 year history of the instrument. It contains much information that is unique to it, and deals with subjects that can be found in no other source. It is a mine of information concerning the history of the instrument, lute makers, composers, players, technique and performance practices of the day. At last, this work has been translated into delightful English by Douglas A. Smith, retaining much of the flamboyant flavor of the original. A long preface gives the background of the work, its era, and the life of Baron. The present edition improves the value of the original, since explanatory footnotes, appendices, and an index have been added. Also, the voluminous Latin and Greek passages have been translated. The book is both delightful and informative.

Book Synopsis The Lute in the Netherlands in the Seventeenth Century by : Jan W.J. Burgers
Download or read book The Lute in the Netherlands in the Seventeenth Century written by Jan W.J. Burgers and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-08-17 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lute played a central role in the rich musical culture of the seventeenth-century ‘Golden Age’ of the Dutch Republic. Like the piano in the nineteenth century, the lute was not just a popular instrument for solo music making, but was also used widely in ensembles and to accompany singers. Though mainly an instrument of the social elite and the aristocracy, it was also played by the numerous and prosperous burgher class. The first part of the book deals with psalm settings for the lute; the way professional lutenists coped with the harsh rules of the free market; Leiden as a veritable international lute centre; and the different types of lutes that can be reconstructed on the basis of the Dutch paintings of the period. The second part of the book is dedicated to Constantijn Huygens (1596–1687), the well-known poet and statesman, and avid player of, and composer for, the lute. The third and final section deals with Dutch sources of lute music, printed as well as those in manuscript. Taken together, this volume provides a broad and many-layered overview of the lute in the seventeenth century. Collectively, the articles will further the reader’s understanding of the lute in its social and cultural context, not only in the Netherlands, but also on the wider European canvas.

Book excerpt: This collection presents carefully crafted guitar arrangements of 44 lute pieces in standard notation together with a pull-out supplement of the original lute notation in French tablature. the music in this book was drawn from three important lute manuscripts: the Rowallan Lute Book (c. 1620) for 10-course lute, the Wemyss Lute Book (c. 1644-1648) for 10-course lute, and the Balcarres Lute Book (c. 1700) for 11-course lute in d minor tuning. Original spelling is retained in the titles with the often-fanciful end result still legible. Even with the sixth string frequently tuned to D, players at the intermediate level should find these pieces rewarding sight-reading material. Those who wish to add the suggested ornamentation will be duly challenged.

Book Synopsis Meantone Temperaments on Lutes and Viols by : David Dolata
Download or read book Meantone Temperaments on Lutes and Viols written by David Dolata and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2016-07-04 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written for musicians by a musician, Meantone Temperaments on Lutes and Viols demystifies tuning systems by providing the basic information, historical context, and practical advice necessary to easily achieve more satisfying tuning results on fretted instruments. Despite the overwhelming organological evidence that many of the finest lutenists, vihuelists, and viola da gamba players in the Renaissance and Baroque eras tuned their instruments in one of the meantone temperaments, most modern early instrument players today still tune to equal temperament. In this handbook richly supplemented with figures, diagrams, and music examples, historical performers will discover why temperaments are necessary and how they work, descriptions of a variety of temperaments, and their application on fretted instruments. This technical book provides downloadable audio tracks and other tools for fretted instrument players to achieve more stable consonances, colorful dissonances, and harmonic progressions that vividly propel the music forward.
Book Synopsis The Lute and the Scars by : Danilo Kis
Download or read book The Lute and the Scars written by Danilo Kis and published by Deep Vellum Publishing. This book was released on 2012-08-21 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written between 1980 and 1986, the six stories that constitute The Lute and the Scars (as well as an untitled piece by the author, included here as "A and B") were transcribed from the manuscripts left by Danilo Kiš following his death in 1989. Like the title story, many of these texts are autobiographical. Others resurrect protagonists belonging to Kiš’s fellow Central European novelists, allowing readers to identify, perhaps, depending on the level of obfuscation, fantasy, and historical accuracy, figures dreamed up by Ödön von Horváth and Endre Ady ("The Stateless"), by the Yugoslavian Nobel laureate Ivo Andric (“Debt”), and by Piotr Rawicz. Against a background of oppressive regimes and political exile, readers will find that the never-ending debate between death and writing continues unabated in these stories—death as allegory or as a voluntary symbolic act, and writing as the one impregnable defense, writing as the only possible means of survival.

Book Synopsis A History of the Lute from Antiquity to the Renaissance by : Douglas Alton Smith
Download or read book A History of the Lute from Antiquity to the Renaissance written by Douglas Alton Smith and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the year 1500, the lute's almost universal appeal throughout Europe had made it a unifying element of Western music and culture. Renaissance composers, singers and dancers all found in the lute a perfect tool for the musical development and maturation of their art. In fact, the lute's unique musical and physical characteristics inspired artists and poets alike to elevate it to a place of such high honor that the lute's image has come to symbolize music itself. This traces the lute's development from the early instruments of Classical Greece to its glorious flowering in Renaissance Europe's golden age of polyphony. This illustrated and comprehensive book explores the historical and cultural reasons behind the lute's importance as the preeminent musical instrument of the Renaissance. With its lengthy bibliography, index, 74 illustrations and 55 musical examples, the author has told the lute's story with a scholarly and visual depth.
Book Synopsis The Lore of the Chinese Lute by : Robert H van Gulik
Download or read book The Lore of the Chinese Lute written by Robert H van Gulik and published by Orchid Press. This book was released on 2021-05-15 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lute, ch'in or guqin is one of China's oldest and most revered musical instruments. Records indicate that it has been a favourite of the literary classes for more than 2,500 years; Confucius himself was a great lover of the instrument. Over the centuries, it became representative of the life, taste and pastimes of the Chinese literati. In addition to its contributions to solo and orchestral musical arrangements, a wealth of symbolic meaning accrued to the lute over time. Not only was knowledge of the instrument reserved for the literati; its study was believed to be conducive to meditation and to facilitate intellectual enlightenment. While a significant body of literature has been written on the lute in Chinese, the present monograph is the first to assemble a broad picture of the instrument and its cultural significance in English. The author, a renowned Sinologue and linguist, studied the playing of the instrument under one of the most famous lute masters of his age.
