Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last century, global analysis was one of the main sources of interaction between geometry and topology. One might argue that the core of this subject is Morse theory, according to which the critical points of a generic smooth proper function on a manifold determine the homology of the manifold. Morse envisioned applying this idea to the calculus of variations, including the theory of periodic motion in classical mechanics, by approximating the space of loops on by a finite-dimensional manifold of high dimension. Palais and Smale reformulated Morse's calculus of variations in terms of infinite-dimensional manifolds, and these infinite-dimensional manifolds were found useful for studying a wide variety of nonlinear PDEs. This book applies infinite-dimensional manifold theory to the Morse theory of closed geodesics in a Riemannian manifold. It then describes the problems encountered when extending this theory to maps from surfaces instead of curves. It treats critical point theory for closed parametrized minimal surfaces in a compact Riemannian manifold, establishing Morse inequalities for perturbed versions of the energy function on the mapping space. It studies the bubbling which occurs when the perturbation is turned off, together with applications to the existence of closed minimal surfaces. The Morse-Sard theorem is used to develop transversality theory for both closed geodesics and closed minimal surfaces. This book is based on lecture notes for graduate courses on “Topics in Differential Geometry”, taught by the author over several years. The reader is assumed to have taken basic graduate courses in differential geometry and algebraic topology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global analysis is the analysis on manifolds. Since the middle of the sixties there exists a highly elaborated setting if the underlying manifold is compact, evidence of which can be found in index theory, spectral geometry, the theory of harmonic maps, many applications to mathematical physics on closed manifolds like gauge theory, Seiberg-Witten theory, etc. If the underlying manifold is open, i.e. non-compact and without boundary, then most of the foundations and of the great achievements fail. Elliptic operators are no longer Fredholm, the analytical and topological indexes are not defined, the spectrum of self-adjoint elliptic operators is no longer discrete, functional spaces strongly depend on the operators involved and the data from geometry, many embedding and module structure theorems do not hold, manifolds of maps are not defined, etc. It is the goal of this new book to provide serious foundations for global analysis on open manifolds, to discuss the difficulties and special features which come from the openness and to establish many results and applications on this basis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the foundational work of Lagrange on the differential equation to be satisfied by a minimal surface of the Euclidean space, the theory of minimal submanifolds have undergone considerable developments, involving techniques from related areas, such as the analysis of partial differential equations and complex analysis. On the other hand, the relativity theory has led to the study of pseudo-Riemannian manifolds, which turns out to be the most general framework for the study of minimal submanifolds. However, most of the recent books on the subject still present the theory only in the Riemannian case. For the first time, this textbook provides a self-contained and accessible introduction to the subject in the general setting of pseudo-Riemannian geometry, only assuming from the reader some basic knowledge about manifold theory. Several classical results, such as the Weierstrass representation formula for minimal surfaces, and the minimizing properties of complex submanifolds, are presented in full generality without sacrificing the clarity of exposition. Finally, a number of very recent results on the subject, including the classification of equivariant minimal hypersurfaces in pseudo-Riemannian space forms and the characterization of minimal Lagrangian surfaces in some pseudo-Khler manifolds are given.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Minimal surfaces date back to Euler and Lagrange and the beginning of the calculus of variations. Many of the techniques developed have played key roles in geometry and partial differential equations. Examples include monotonicity and tangent cone analysis originating in the regularity theory for minimal surfaces, estimates for nonlinear equations based on the maximum principle arising in Bernstein's classical work, and even Lebesgue's definition of the integral that he developed in his thesis on the Plateau problem for minimal surfaces. This book starts with the classical theory of minimal surfaces and ends up with current research topics. Of the various ways of approaching minimal surfaces (from complex analysis, PDE, or geometric measure theory), the authors have chosen to focus on the PDE aspects of the theory. The book also contains some of the applications of minimal surfaces to other fields including low dimensional topology, general relativity, and materials science. The only prerequisites needed for this book are a basic knowledge of Riemannian geometry and some familiarity with the maximum principle.

Book excerpt: Hoping to make the text more accessible to readers not schooled in the probabalistic tradition, Stroock (affiliation unspecified) emphasizes the geometric over the stochastic analysis of differential manifolds. Chapters deconstruct Brownian paths, diffusions in Euclidean space, intrinsic and extrinsic Riemannian geometry, Bocher's identity, and the bundle of orthonormal frames. The volume humbly concludes with an "admission of defeat" in regard to recovering the Li-Yau basic differential inequality. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR.

Book excerpt: Eigenfunctions of the Laplacian of a Riemannian manifold can be described in terms of vibrating membranes as well as quantum energy eigenstates. This book is an introduction to both the local and global analysis of eigenfunctions. The local analysis of eigenfunctions pertains to the behavior of the eigenfunctions on wavelength scale balls. After re-scaling to a unit ball, the eigenfunctions resemble almost-harmonic functions. Global analysis refers to the use of wave equation methods to relate properties of eigenfunctions to properties of the geodesic flow. The emphasis is on the global methods and the use of Fourier integral operator methods to analyze norms and nodal sets of eigenfunctions. A somewhat unusual topic is the analytic continuation of eigenfunctions to Grauert tubes in the real analytic case, and the study of nodal sets in the complex domain. The book, which grew out of lectures given by the author at a CBMS conference in 2011, provides complete proofs of some model results, but more often it gives informal and intuitive explanations of proofs of fairly recent results. It conveys inter-related themes and results and offers an up-to-date comprehensive treatment of this important active area of research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many properties of minimal surfaces are of a global nature, and this is already true for the results treated in the first two volumes of the treatise. Part I of the present book can be viewed as an extension of these results. For instance, the first two chapters deal with existence, regularity and uniqueness theorems for minimal surfaces with partially free boundaries. Here one of the main features is the possibility of "edge-crawling" along free parts of the boundary. The third chapter deals with a priori estimates for minimal surfaces in higher dimensions and for minimizers of singular integrals related to the area functional. In particular, far reaching Bernstein theorems are derived. The second part of the book contains what one might justly call a "global theory of minimal surfaces" as envisioned by Smale. First, the Douglas problem is treated anew by using Teichmüller theory. Secondly, various index theorems for minimal theorems are derived, and their consequences for the space of solutions to Plateau ́s problem are discussed. Finally, a topological approach to minimal surfaces via Fredholm vector fields in the spirit of Smale is presented.

The authors establish, on a solid analytical foundation, a flexible topological index theory which proves useful for the study of minimal surfaces. One of the highlights of the work is the result that for every Jordan curve on the standard $n$-sphere, there exist at least two minimal surfaces bounded by the curve.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the study of the volume of vector fields on Riemannian manifolds. Providing a thorough overview of research on vector fields defining minimal submanifolds, and on the existence and characterization of volume minimizers, it includes proofs of the most significant results obtained since the subject’s introduction in 1986. Aiming to inspire further research, it also highlights a selection of intriguing open problems, and exhibits some previously unpublished results. The presentation is direct and deviates substantially from the usual approaches found in the literature, requiring a significant revision of definitions, statements, and proofs. A wide range of topics is covered, including: a discussion on the conditions for a vector field on a Riemannian manifold to determine a minimal submanifold within its tangent bundle with the Sasaki metric; numerous examples of minimal vector fields (including those of constant length on punctured spheres); a thorough analysis of Hopf vector fields on odd-dimensional spheres and their quotients; and a description of volume-minimizing vector fields of constant length on spherical space forms of dimension three. Each chapter concludes with an up-to-date survey which offers supplementary information and provides valuable insights into the material, enhancing the reader's understanding of the subject. Requiring a solid understanding of the fundamental concepts of Riemannian geometry, the book will be useful for researchers and PhD students with an interest in geometric analysis.

Book excerpt: In the theory of minimal submanifolds, Bernstein's problem and Plateau's problem are central topics. This important book presents the Douglas-Rado solution to Plateau's problem, but the main emphasis is on Bernstein's problem and its new developments in various directions: the value distribution of the Gauss image of a minimal surface in Euclidean 3-space, Simons' work for minimal graphic hypersurfaces, and the author's own contributions to Bernstein type theorems for higher codimension. The author also introduces some related topics, such as submanifolds with parallel mean curvature, Weierstrass type representation for surfaces of mean curvature 1 in hyperbolic 3-space, and special Lagrangian submanifolds. This new edition contains the author's recent work on the Lawson-Osserman's problem for higher codimension, and on Chern's problem for minimal hypersurfaces in the sphere. Both Chern's problem and Lawson-Osserman's problem are important problems in minimal surface theory which are still unsolved. In addition, some new techniques were developed to address those problems in detail, which are of interest in the field of geometric analysis.
