Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to Christian Missions For years the author had been conducting a brief study of Christian missions, using such text-books as had been available. He had given lectures supplementary to the text-books he at the time was using. His lectures had grown in volume, till he found little time for interlocutory study with the class after delivering them. These lec tures had all along been informed by a unifying principle - the relation of the mental grasp of the Christian system to mission work. He had been asked repeatedly to publish them. Two years ago he began to rewrite those bearing on world-wide missions, as opportunity was given; and now offers these to the Christian public, and particularly to the ministers, elders, deacons and brotherhood-workers of his own communion. It will be found that they constitute an attempt at a philosophy of missions; and, it is hoped, that they contain a relatively small amount of unessential detail. It has been a constant aim, at any rate, to burden the memory only with the essential facts; but to stir the thought. In a word, the aim has been to introduce to the proper study of missions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Via Christi: An Introduction to the Study of Missions During the Ecumenical Conference, held in New York, April 21-May 1, 1900, a long-contemplated plan to unite all Women's Boards of Missions in the United States and Canada in a more thorough study of missions took definite shape. At a meeting held at the close of the conference, a representative committee was appointed, and was given discretionary power to arrange the course of study and provide the method of its pursuance. "Via Christi, an Introduction to the Study of Missions," is the first of a series proposed by the committee, and will be followed by studies of India, China, Japan, and other countries, each volume treating of the history of all missions in the country to which it is devoted, and beginning, in each case, with the nineteenth century. This course is intended to cover a period of several years. A simple preliminary series of six lessons, in leaflet form, for use in missionary meetings, clubs, and home study, entitled "Christian Missions in the Nineteenth Century," was issued by the Committee, September, 1900, the lessons being: 1. Awakenings and Beginnings. 2. The Century in India. 3. The Century in China. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters on Missions As the New Model for Christian Missions has been republished in the United States, Mr. Orme's Introduction has a greater importance, than would otherwise be attached to it. Yet it will be found interesting and instructive, and well deserving of an attentive perusal, even by those who have not read the Essay, Which it is chiefly designed to controvert. The mind of Mr. Orme was vigorous and' well regulated; and though the church of Christ has been called to lament his decease since the publication of this volume, he will long continue to speak, in Eng land and America, by means of his Life and Times of Richard Baxter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Christian Missions The story of missions, which reaches back to the beginning of the Christian era, and embraces almost every country in the world, cannot be told within the limits of a single volume. The task which I have ventured to undertake is of a far less ambitious character, my object being to provide the intelligent reader with an outline sketch of Christian missions which may enable him to obtain a correct perspective, but which will need to be filled in for each several country and period of history by much careful study. This volume is not intended to serve as a dictionary nor as a commentary upon missions, but as a text-book to encourage and facilitate their study. Those who have devoted the largest amount of time to such study will be most ready to forgive its imperfections and shortcomings. A well-known authority on the subject of Foreign Missions, to whom the task of writing this book was originally assigned, but who failed to respond to the invitation, wrote to its present author, "You have an almost impossible task; I should absolutely quail at the work you are doing." It would have been comparatively easy to fill the space allotted to me by the publisher with a discussion of the principles which have governed the activities of Christian missionaries, and it would have been still less difficult to compile a volume of statistics which would have shown, more or less accurately, the progress that has been made in bringing about the conversion of non-Christian lands, but in neither case would the object with which this volume was planned have been fulfilled. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of Christian Missions In its origin and history, Christianity stands dis tinguished from all the ethnic religions, or religions of some particular nation or race. Many religions have had their home exclusively within single races or peoples, making no effort, and showing no abil ity, to go farther in the world. Such were the religions of ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, Scandi navia: such also is Hinduism, which is the religion of India alone; and reveals no missionary feeling toward mankind. Such is the religion Of China, which goes beyond its native realm only to influ ence kindred peoples. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Missions, Vol. 1: Their Agents, Their Method, and Their Results This policy, once adopted by England and Hol land in their Asiatic possessions, but long since aban doned by both, is now peculiar to Russia among all the nations of the earth. No similar reproach can be urged, even by those who esteem them least, against the protestant churches of England and America. They have done, during the last fifty years, and are still doing, all which their zeal suggests and their caution permits, to recommend to the heathen world the religious systems which they severally profess. How far they have succeeded in this aim, and by what methods they have sought to promote it, will sufficiently appear in the following pages. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Challenge to Christian Missions: Missionary Questions and the Modern Mind The citizen of the world, too - represented by the late Miss Mary Kingsley, traveller in West Africa, - has pertinent questions to put, concerning the actual effects of the work, which demand courageous consideration. On the veranda or the stoep after dinner, and on board ship, what is said as to the mission-made native by the average layman who knows life among dusky races? The subject is often on the lips of civilians, military men, ships' officers, traders, travellers, and ladies who have had experience of native servants. Many of them are frankly critical of the missionary and his converts. Some, while disappointed with the results of the work, are silent because reluctant to say any thing against well-intentioned Christian effort. Only a few of them are warm supporters of the missionary cause. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus sends us into the world just as God the Father sent him - and yet Christians continue to disagree on what this involves. Some believe that the focus of Christian mission is evangelizing and 'saving souls'. Others emphasize global justice issues or relief and development work. Is either view correct on its own? John Stott's classic volume, first published forty years ago, presents an enduring view of Christian mission that is just as needed today. Newly updated and expanded by Christopher J. H. Wright, Christian Mission in the Modern World provides a biblically based approach to mission that addresses both spiritual and physical needs. With his trademark clarity and conviction, Stott illuminates how the Great Commission itself not only assumes the proclamation that makes disciples, but also teaches obedience to the Great Commandment of love and service. Wright has expertly updated the original book and demonstrates the continuing relevance of Stott's prescient thinking. This balanced approach to mission encourages current and future Christians to embrace an unconflicted and holistic model of ministry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Church Missions This is the symbolizing of a real Church Mission. The giant upon whose shoulders is seated the Infant Saviour is the nation to whom, for the time, Christ has committed the office of evangelizing the world. It is a heavy duty, and the bearer bends under the weight of it; but in the act of performing it, he has acquired the strength to perform it. His proportions are already gigantic; he out-tops by the head and shoulders all the figures that are around him his limbs seem capable of sustaining far more than the weight they carry; and the fir tree, uprooted from where it grew beside his path - that is to say, the natural advantages which present them selves in the very path of his duty - supports his steps; for, be it observed, he is not taking a devious or arbitrary course, but follow ing the beaten path - the path marked out to him by the Eternal Wisdom, and direct Revelation of God. The remainder of the picture explains itself; it is the natural fruit of his labors. He carries the true Christ, and high and low, rich and poor, young and old, kings and subjects, priests and shep herds, alike blessed by the outstretched Hand, crowd after the giant that bears it. Willingly and cheerfully they swell his retinue, and contribute to his earthly pomp and glory. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
