Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to Caesar Nearly everywhere in the South and in most schools of the North, Caesar is the first Latin author studied, and generally at the beginning of the second year in Latin. Efforts have been made to substitute second Latin books, Viri Romae, Nepos, and other less difficult texts, but in the majority of instances without much success. Parents, teachers, and colleges seem to unite in the demand that Caesar should be the first author read, and that we must find the shortest road to this end; that we must train our boys and girls from the earliest possible moment to read, not sec ond rate authors because of fewer difficulties pre sented, but Caesar, Cicero, and the other great masters of Roman literature. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Julius Caesar: With Introduction, Notes, and Questions for Review William Shakespeare, the greatest of English dramatic poets, was born at stratford-on-avon, Warwickshire, England, on April 23, 1564. His father, John Shakespeare, was of the yeoman class. He had been a successful Warwickshire farmer, but he adopted the trade of glover on his removal to Stratford in 1553. There he soon became an important factor in municipal afiairs, and by ability and industry he rapidly arose from one position of trust to another, until finally, in 1568, he became high bailiff or mayor of the town. Shakespeare's mother, Mary Arden, was of an old Warwickshire family, and though she inherited lands and houses she had no education. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakspere's Julius Caesar The text of this edition of Julius Caesar is founded on that of the Cambridge Shakspere the very few changes that occur have been made only after due consideration, and are hardly important enough to warrant mention. Those familiar with the various editions of the play will recognise the indebtedness of the present editor for many of. The notes that accompany the text, -an indebt edness herewith acknowledged once and for all. The aim of this edition, as is stated elsewhere, is to help the young student in his first serious reading of a Shaksperian drama. For this student the introduction and the notes were prepared, and for his sake much in formation was included that a riper scholarship would find unnecessary and even tedious. The editor has suc ceeded in his task just so far as he has been able to put himself in the place of an instructor trying to interest the average class of young people in the study of one of Shakspere's best known and best liked plays. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Caesar's Gallic War: Books I-IV and Selections From V-VII, With Introduction, Notes, and Vocabulary In deference to the usual custom, the Introduction contains an account of the Roman Art of War, which, although brief, will be sufficient, it is hoped, to meet the needs of the young student of Caesar. The editors believe that too much time _should not be given to this subject, but that the main object of the work of the second year should be to learn to read and to translate Latin. Anything which can be done in addition to this to increase the student's interest in the subject is most desirable; but the principal aim should not be lost sight of. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Caesar and the Germans: Adapted From Caesar, 'De Bello Gallico, ' and Edited, With Introduction, Notes, Vocabulary, &C This book is intended for use by pupils who have got far enough to deal with compound sentences in Latin, and can spot and parse the ordinary verb and noun forms. The earlier part is a good deal simplified, so that Part I. could be used by a lower form, the whole book by a higher one, who would be able to run through Part I. rapidly. In Part I. the speeches in Or. Obliqua are turned into Or. Recta, Or. Obliqua being put in italics throughout the book. For convenience of reference, and comparison with other editions, the number and sequence of the chapters has not been changed from the original. After Part I., there is very little alteration of the text, a few longer sentences being slightly shortened, and, occasionally, causal clauses put into brackets. As the text proved rather longer than was anticipated, the latter part had to be considerably shortened. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Caesar, De Bello Gallico, Vol. 3: With Introduction, Notes, Maps and Illustrations, Exercises on Translation at Sight and on Re-Translation, Hints on Translating Caesar, and the Vocabulary of Caesar IN the editor's Opinion, the first aim of a teacher of Latin is to enable the student to read Latin with accuracy, appreciation and speed, as the only means of reaching the higher ideals of classical study. In this edition therefore the constant aim has been to further the intelligent translation of the text into idio matic English, and to build up a sound knowledge of Latin as a language to be read. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Augustus Caesar: And the Organisation of the Empire of Rome This volume may be considered to some extent as a sequel to the earlier volume on Julius Caesar in this series which was written by Mr. W. Warde Fowler. It also inevitably overlaps to a certain de gree the volume on Cicero, written by Mr. J. L. Strachan-davidson. I hope it may be found not wholly unworthy to take a place by the side of those two brilliant studies. My obligations to the in numerable scholars and historians who have worked and tilled the same ground before me are exceed ingly great. For the earlier period I may specially mention the illuminative essays in the great Dublin edition of T fie Letters of Cicero; for the constitu tional changes introduced by Augustus, Mr. A. H. J. Greenidge's Roman Puelz'c Life; and for the pro vincial administration, Professor Mommsen's well known work, T fie Provinces of Ike Roman Empire. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakspere's Tragedy of Julius Caesar: Edited for School Use The text of this edition of Julius Caesar varies from that of the First Folio only where the latter seems clearly to be corrupt. In the punctuation of the text some approach has been made toward modern usage. The notes and other helps have been prepared with special reference to the requirements for entrance to the larger colleges, but they are not limited by such require ments. Effort has been made, in the Introduction, to give the student something of that sense of acquaintance with Shakspere, as aaman, which gives the true lover of the poet a personal interest in the plays and therefore a readier appreciation of them. The student has been aided, also, to get the poet's points of view. For, as Mr. Dowden observes, even Shakspere could not transcend himself; he had his points of view, not all of which were on Parnassus. One of them was in the audience for which he wrote. Always mindful of the ofi'ice receipts, the playwright habitually looked through the eyes of his Elizabethan playgoer, who, in turn, looked through the atmosphere of the times. It is desirable, therefore, to approach the reading of the play with a fresh sense of the conditions - within the playwright and without - that went to make it what it is.
