Bowering was a 30-year-old poet and university student and Curnoe was a 29-year-old painter who had dropped out of art school in Toronto to return to his place of birth. Their art was in its youth, their eyes and ears were wide open and their stomachs could withstand pots and pots of strong, black coffee. For 26 years they grew up parallel, inside each other’s work. Greg Curnoe was killed on his bicycle late in 1992, struck down in the middle of his bright career. This memoir was begun in London, Ontario, on November 20, 1992.

Book excerpt: Obesity is a global pandemic rising beyond the status of a lifestyle disorder, and its consequences include impaired metabolism, energy disruption, and abdominal fat deposition and storage. Body Recomposition: A Comprehensive and Metabolic Alternative to Weight Loss presents information on body recomposition, which emphasizes the approach of losing fat while gaining muscle. It contains vast research on topics including factors that influence fat accumulation, strategies for weight management, healthy diet and eating patterns, physical exercise, and lifestyle strategies in healthy weight management. Features: Influence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) on stored fat accumulation and its treatment Harnessing the gut microbial arm in combating obesity Roles of leptin, ghrelin, NPY, cortisol, and diverse neurotransmitters in appetite suppression and regulation Genetic predisposition and genetic addiction obesity risk assessment and therapies Gut–brain axis role in metabolism and body recomposition Efficacy of phytochemicals in weight management and roles of drugs and natural supplements in weight management Importance of physical exercise and manageable lifestyle factors Existing commercial weight loss strategies can fail to achieve and maintain sustainable weight loss or enhance greater healthy fat loss. This book provides an improved alternative for dietitians/nutritionists, health practitioners, and clinicians, as well as food and nutrition scientists.

Book excerpt: "The IAEA has fostered the more widespread use of a stable isotope technique to assess body composition in different population groups to address priority areas in public health nutrition in Member States. It has done this by supporting national and regional nutrition projects through its technical cooperation programme and coordinated research projects over many years. This publication was developed by an international group of experts to provide practical hands-on guidance in the use of this technique in settings where analysis of stable isotope ratios in biological samples is to be made by isotope ratio mass spectrometry. The publication is targeted at new users of this technique, for example nutritionists, analytical chemists and other professionals. More detailed information on the theoretical background and the practical applications of state of the art methodologies to monitor changes in body composition can be found in IAEA Human Health Series No. 3, Assessment of Body Composition and Total Energy Expenditure in Humans by Stable Isotope Techniques."--Foreword.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this Special Issue, “Water Intake, Body Water Regulation, and Health”, is to present novel reviews and experimental data regarding hydration physiology and its implication in overall health. Water has previously been dubbed the forgotten nutrient due to humans’ and animals’ ability to subsist seemingly unchanged across a wide range of daily water intakes. However, with the introduction of stressors such as exercise, diseased states, and/or chronic high or low water intake, the homeostatic signals related to body water regulation can influence organ and whole-body health. This Special Issue will discuss water intake, the scientific rationale surrounding the U.S. and European water intake guidelines, homeostatic mechanisms, diseases related to dysfunction of water regulation, and differences in the volume and the vehicle in which the water is contained (i.e., plain water versus mixed beverages) on water intake during and following exercise. The aim is to continue discussion surrounding water, the previously forgotten nutrient, and highlight the importance of water in daily life.

Book excerpt: This publication was developed by an international group of experts as an integral part of the IAEA's efforts to contribute to the transfer of technology and knowledge in nutrition. Its aim is to assist Member States in their efforts to combat malnutrition by facilitating the use of relevant nuclear techniques. The stable (non-radioactive) isotope technique has been developed to assess intake of human milk in breastfed infants. The practical application of the stable isotope technique, based on analysis of deuterium by Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR), is presented in this book.

The book provides practical information on the assessment of body composition from birth up to two years of age and is intended for nutritionists, pediatricians and other health professionals. The body composition assessment techniques included in this publication were selected as methodologies with the highest potential for standardization globally based on considerations such as access to equipment, cost and the training needs of staff and include stable isotope dilution for total body water assessment, as well as dual energy X ray absorptiometry and air displacement plethysmography. In addition, the importance of standardization of anthrop
