Book excerpt: This book focuses on the fault-tolerant cooperative control (FTCC) of multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (multi-UAVs). It provides systematic and comprehensive descriptions of FTCC issues in multi-UAVs concerning faults, external disturbances, strongly unknown nonlinearities, and input saturation. Further, it addresses FTCC design from longitudinal motions to attitude motions, and outer-loop position motions of multi-UAVs. The book’s detailed control schemes can be used to enhance the flight safety of multi-UAVs. As such, the book offers readers an in-depth understanding of UAV safety in cooperative/formation flight and corresponding design methods. The FTCC methods presented here can also provide guidelines for engineers to improve the safety of aerospace engineering systems. The book offers a valuable asset for scientists and researchers, aerospace engineers, control engineers, lecturers and teachers, and graduates and undergraduates in the system and control community, especially those working in the field of UAV cooperation and multi-agent systems.

Book excerpt: Globalization pressures have made cooperation on a global scale both necessary and possible. But cooperation is not easy in a world dominated by individual, cultural, and national selfish interests. The opposition to cooperation means that cooperation is not natural, but must be instituted through an intellectual and social struggle against countervailing forces. This book discusses issues that are necessary to describe the nature of cooperation and how it can be promoted as a social and ethical ideal amidst a sea of competing interests. Dr. Ratner uses the framework of cooperativism, that is the system of social institutions, social philosophy, cultural psychology and politics that promotes cooperation, as a starting point. Elements of cooperativism are derived from a rigorous analysis of various sources, including the needs of tendencies of human culture and human psychology.

Book excerpt: The book brings together an overview of standard concepts in cooperative game theory with applications to the analysis of social networks and hierarchical authority organizations. The standard concepts covered include the multi-linear extension, the Core, the Shapley value, and the cooperative potential. Also discussed are the Core for a restricted collection of formable coalitions, various Core covers, the Myerson value, value-based potentials, and share potentials. Within the context of social networks this book discusses the measurement of centrality and power as well as allocation rules such as the Myerson value and hierarchical allocation rules. For hierarchical organizations, two basic approaches to the exercise of authority are explored; for each approach the allocation of the generated output is developed. Each chapter is accompanied by a problem section, allowing this book to be used as a textbook for an advanced graduate course on game theory.

Book excerpt: The paradigm of ‘multi-agent’ cooperative control is the challenge frontier for new control system application domains, and as a research area it has experienced a considerable increase in activity in recent years. This volume, the result of a UCLA collaborative project with Caltech, Cornell and MIT, presents cutting edge results in terms of the “dimensions” of cooperative control from leading researchers worldwide. This dimensional decomposition allows the reader to assess the multi-faceted landscape of cooperative control. Cooperative Control of Distributed Multi-Agent Systems is organized into four main themes, or dimensions, of cooperative control: distributed control and computation, adversarial interactions, uncertain evolution and complexity management. The military application of autonomous vehicles systems or multiple unmanned vehicles is primarily targeted; however much of the material is relevant to a broader range of multi-agent systems including cooperative robotics, distributed computing, sensor networks and data network congestion control. Cooperative Control of Distributed Multi-Agent Systems offers the reader an organized presentation of a variety of recent research advances, supporting software and experimental data on the resolution of the cooperative control problem. It will appeal to senior academics, researchers and graduate students as well as engineers working in the areas of cooperative systems, control and optimization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis concerns the cooperative control of networked vehicles. Autonomous driving is a topic that is currently being discussed with great interest from researchers, vehicle manufacturers and the corresponding media. Future autonomous vehicles should bring the passengers to their desired destination while improving both safety and efficiency compared to current human-driven vehicles. The inherent problem of all vehicle coordination tasks is to guarantee collision avoidance in every situation. To this end, autonomous vehicles have to share information with each other in order to perform traffic manoeuvres that require the cooperation of multiple vehicles. The fundamental problem of vehicle platooning is studied extensively which describes the task of arranging a set of vehicles so that they drive with a common velocity and a prescribed distance. Local design objectives are derived that have to be satisfied by the vehicle controllers. In particular, it is shown that the vehicles have to be externally positive to achieve collision avoidance. As an abstraction from real traffic scenarios, swarms of networked vehicles are considered. The main difference between swarming and traffic problems is that a communication structure that has been appropriate in the beginning might become unsuited for the control task due to the relative movement of the vehicles. To solve this problem, this thesis proposes to use the Delaunay triangulation as a switching communication structure.

Book excerpt: In Collective Courage, Jessica Gordon Nembhard chronicles African American cooperative business ownership and its place in the movements for Black civil rights and economic equality. Not since W. E. B. Du Bois’s 1907 Economic Co-operation Among Negro Americans has there been a full-length, nationwide study of African American cooperatives. Collective Courage extends that story into the twenty-first century. Many of the players are well known in the history of the African American experience: Du Bois, A. Philip Randolph and the Ladies' Auxiliary to the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, Nannie Helen Burroughs, Fannie Lou Hamer, Ella Jo Baker, George Schuyler and the Young Negroes’ Co-operative League, the Nation of Islam, and the Black Panther Party. Adding the cooperative movement to Black history results in a retelling of the African American experience, with an increased understanding of African American collective economic agency and grassroots economic organizing. To tell the story, Gordon Nembhard uses a variety of newspapers, period magazines, and journals; co-ops’ articles of incorporation, minutes from annual meetings, newsletters, budgets, and income statements; and scholarly books, memoirs, and biographies. These sources reveal the achievements and challenges of Black co-ops, collective economic action, and social entrepreneurship. Gordon Nembhard finds that African Americans, as well as other people of color and low-income people, have benefitted greatly from cooperative ownership and democratic economic participation throughout the nation’s history.

Book excerpt: As the complexity of design, visualization and engineering increases rapidly, single-user's e?ort is no longer enough to accomplishever-growingrequirements. Group e?ort becomes essential. There are many industrial areas that demand strong CDVE support such as mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, architecture design, engineering and building construction (AEC), etc. There are numerousother application areaswhere cooperativeand concurrent working is becoming popular, such as entertainment program development, networked gaming, simulation, collaborative learning, etc. Successful cooperative design, visualization and engineering highly depend on the advances in fundamental research areas such as concurrent proce- ing, middleware, agent-based methods, design patterns, distributed systems, databases, transport protocols in network communication, human machine - teraction, group behavior ..., just to name a few. There is a very tight re- tionship between cooperative design, visualization and engineering. Cooperative design will become impossible without cooperative visualization while coop- ative engineering processes would not be complete without cooperative design and visualization. From my research experience in the?eld since 1996 in the Spanish National R & D Project CICYT TEL 96-0544, 3D Cooperative Design System (Sistemas Cooperativos de Diseo en 3D), up to the European Esprit (IST) Project No.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building on theories of finance and distribution, and the political economy of finance, this book explains the influence of financial cooperatives on wealth and income distribution, and institutional factors that determine the development of financial cooperatives. The book discusses the dynamics of income and wealth distribution with and without financial cooperatives, and defines the economic objective for financial cooperatives. Through explaining the influence of political institutions and regulations on the development of financial cooperatives, this book examines why financial cooperatives grew in some emerging economies and not in other similar ones. The book is of interest to scholars interested in financial economics, political economy of finance, alternative banking and development finance, and banking regulation. The book also gives valuable output to central bankers and financial and monetary policy makers in underdeveloped economies. In addition, it will be of particular interest to practitioners in international development institutions, especially those engaged in development finance and rural finance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
