This book was released on 1990-08-01 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. In this book, the author presents a Kierkegaard that goes beyond what we read of him in many textbooks. Aside from a look at Kierkegaard the prophet, the denouncer of the social injustice and of the religious and ecclesiastical hypocrisy, Álvarez treats readers to a detailed examination of the times that formed Kierkegaard’s teachings and philosphies. Eliseo Perez-Alvarez studied theology and philosophy in Mexico City, Atlanta, Chicago and Copenhagen. He has been professor, pastor, editor and coordinator for Hispanic Ministries in Mexico, USA, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. He currently is an Associate Professor of Latino Theology and Mission at the Lutheran Seminary Program in the Southwest in Austin, Texas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Søren Aabye Kierkegaard, born in Copenhagen in 1813 and deceased in 1855, was a Danish philosopher, theologian, poet, and social critic, widely regarded as the first existentialist philosopher. Throughout his career, he wrote critical texts on organized religion, Christianity, morality, ethics, psychology, and philosophy of religion, showing a particular fondness for figures of speech such as metaphor, irony, and allegory. The work " Fear and Trembling" is one of the most well-known and esteemed among Søren Kierkegaard's vast production. In this work, Kierkegaard does not deny his Christian past; rather, he asserts that this religious doctrine must be internalized by the individual according to their own subjective demands. The analysis contained in "Fear and Trembling" is based on parameters that are still fully relevant for contemporary reflection on religious conduct.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Søren Kierkegaard (1813-1855), little known or read outside of Denmark in his own day, has come to be widely appreciated for his affirmation of the Christian faith and his critique of the human condition. He is responsible for one of the major currents of twentieth-century thought, existentialism, which emphasizes the priority of existence over essence. Christian existentialism appropriated his insights for theology and ethics, stressing human experience, freedom, and the commitment of faith. Elements of his approach are found in Karl Barth, Paul Tillich, Emil Brunner, Rudolf Bultmann, Reinhold Niehuhr, and Karl Rahner. Kierkegaard tried to clarify for his contemporaries the nature of Christianity, stressing that no philosophical system could explain the human condition. He emphasized the subjectivity of truth and could not refrain from attacking the cold formality and indifference of the state church of his day. In this book, Dr. Duncan guides the reader critically and skillfully through Kierkegaard's life and works. Book jacket.

Book excerpt: This volume focuses on Søren Kierkegaard as a theologian of the gospel of God's grace, rather than as the “Father of Existentialism.” In so doing, it illuminates his vision of humans as relational beings who find fulfillment in the loving embrace of God with us (thus making him a would-be critic of later secular forms of “Existentialism”).

Book excerpt: This indispensable guide to the search for kinship with God written by a great nineteenth-century Danish philosopher whose writings set the stage for existentialism. Kierkegaard struck out against all forms of established order–including the established church–that work to make men complacent with themselves and thereby obscure their personal responsibility to encounter God. He considered Training in Christianity his most important book. It represented his effort to replace what he believed had become "an amiable, sentimental paganism" with authentic Christianity. Kierkegaard's challenge to live out the implications of Christianity in the most personal decisions of life will greatly appeal to readers today who are trying to develop their personal integrity in accordance with the truths of revealed religion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the wide influence of Soren Kirkegaard's writings upon modern Christian thought is now generally recognized, the insights of the Danish knight of faith have often been misread and misinterpreted by those who seek to canonize their own theologies by appealing to Kierkegaard. The fact that modern Christian thought owes much to Kierkegaard does not mean that modern Christian thought speaks fo Kierkegaard at all points. In this short study, Carnell has allowed Kierkegaard to speak for himself, thus providing a valuable glimpse into the thought of the great Danish philosopher-theologian. Restricting the number of critical comments (including a short closing chapter entitled Yes and No), Carnell has written a short survey of Kierkegaard's thought with generous documentation from his writings. The two major theses which the author discusses are existential living and Truth is subjectivity. He elucidates the latter thesis by explaining the four affirmative elements in Kierkegaard's idea of subjective truth: faith, suffering, hope, and love. Carnell concludes by stating that because Kierkegaard strove to enrich the body of Christ by developing a fresh interpretation of spiritual truth, his books should be read, and read again. This volume will do more than encourage readers to do that; it will help them when they do.
