Entre os entes criados, coloca-se numa categoria intermédia entre as substâncias corpóreas superiores e as substâncias angélicas inferiores. E isto não porque é corpo, mas porque sua natureza específica exige um corpo. Não é prisioneira do corpo, mas a sua forma. Portanto, é impossível refletir sobre a alma sem refletir sobre o corpo ao qual ela dá vida. A alma não pode alcançar seu fim sem um corpo. Necessita de seus órgãos para cumprir as operações vegetativas, sensitivas e intelectuais que requer o ser humano. Exceto uma: a de inteligir a essência dos entes. Para esta operação específica e outras relacionadas (conformar espécies inteligíveis, pôr em ação o entendimento passivo e elaborar os conceitos universais) não necessita órgão corporal algum. Basta-se a si mesma. Como pura forma que é, subsiste ao corpo. É incorruptível e continua entendendo e conhecendo uma vez separada daquele. Quando o corpo já não possui as disposições adequadas às operações da alma, esta, como forma subsistente, se separa. O corpo não pode mais ser chamado assim, mas equivocadamente. A obra consiste em dez capítulos. A saber: 1-O que é a alma? 2-A origem da alma. 3-A união da alma e do corpo. 4-As potências da alma em geral. 5-As potências intelectivas da alma. 6-As potências apetitivas da alma. 7-A alma e o livre-arbítrio. 8-A alma e o conhecimento dos entes materiais. 9-A alma e o conhecimento das substâncias imateriais. 10-Conceitos fundamentais sobre a alma. Segue-se um Epílogo, característico destes volumes, baseado em perguntas e respostas. E abundantes notas, principalmente da "Suma Teológica" e das Questões disputadas sobre a alma".

Manser Gallus já ensinava que "o problema do ser foi e continuará sendo o grande problema da filosofia, o eixo em torno do qual tudo gira." Neste sentido, São Tomás superou o Estagirita. Deu lugar a uma concepção existencial do Ser. De uma visão essencialista ou substancialista, abriu caminhos para uma reflexão sobre a existência como a dimensão plena e perfeita do ser. E do Primeiro motor imóvel aristotélico, passou a Deus, o "Esse subsistens", aquele que é, cuja essência e existência não podem distinguir-se, ato puro. Que cria e se envolve providencialmente com sua criação. São muitas as diferenças entre Tomás e o Gênio grego. O ser por antonomásia é Deus. Tudo o resto participa de seu Ser. Neste sentido, Tomás resolveu o problema do Ser e refletiu sobre o Ser enquanto tal e não apenas sobre o ente. A obra se desenvolve em 18 capítulos. A saber: "Introdução - Primeira Parte: O Ser nos gregos. 1-Heráclito: puro devenir sem ser. 2-Parmênides: ser sem devenir. 3-Platão: o ser nas idéias. 4-Aristóteles: o ser e os entes. Segunda Parte: O ser em São Tomás. 5-Aristóteles e São Tomás. 6-Epistemologia. 7-Hilemorfismo. 8-O ser dos entes. 9-Originalidade da doutrina tomista do ser. 10-O ente. 11-Ser e participação. 12-O ser e a vida. 13-A ordem dos entes. 14-O ser e o agir. 15-Os transcendentais. 16-O ente é uno. 17-O ente é verdadeiro. 18-O ente é bom. Embora alguns considerem que o desenvolvimento desta doutrina constitui "a essência" do tomismo, só menciono esta posição sem tomar partido por ela. Em rigor, não vejo esta questão tão clara. Por agora. A verdade é que depois de Aristóteles e São Tomás, o problema do ser e do ente não podem ser estudados sem remeter ao ato e à potência. Porque ente é dito de várias maneiras. E uma delas é ente em ato e ente em potência. Argumentar em torno dele, necessariamente nos leva ao movimento. Ou também, à mudança e ao devir dos entes. Ou seja, à Filosofia da natureza ou Física. Embora seja um pouco ousado dividir a Filosofia do ser da Filosofia da natureza em Aristóteles, respeitamos essa divisão. A consideração metafísica da mudança ou movimento obriga à consideração física da mesma. Tentei ser o mais claro possível e didático sobre um tópico obscuro. Com efeito, a utilização dos termos mudança e movimento, que no início Aristóteles considera distintos e depois sinónimos, confunde um pouco. Omiti um Prólogo para acreditar desnecessário e avanço direto para os diferentes temas, distribuídos em 8 capítulos, da seguinte forma: 1-A realidade da mudança. 2-A mudança. 3-O movimento. 4-A matéria. 5-A forma. 6-Introdução ao ato e à potência. 7-A potência. 8-O ato. Finalmente, um epílogo e as notas. Referências a outros autores são numerosas, como é meu costume.
