Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Safety and Health in Confined Spaces goes beyond all other resources currently available. International in scope, the 15 chapters and 10 appendices cover every facet of this important subject. A significant addition to the literature, this book provides a confined space focus to other health and safety concepts. Confined spaces differ from other workspaces because their boundary surfaces amplify the consequences of hazardous conditions. The relationship between the individual, the boundary surface, and the hazardous condition is the critical factor in the onset, outcome, and severity of accidents in these workspaces. The author uses information about causative and other factors from analysis of fatal accidents to develop a hazard assessment and hazard management system. He provides a detailed, disciplined protocol, covering 36 hazardous conditions, that addresses all segments of work--the undisturbed space, entry preparation, work activity, and emergency preparedness and response--and illustrates how to use it. Safety and Health in Confined Spaces gives you the tools you need for preventing and responding to accidents.

Book excerpt: This book makes Hazardous or Electrical Area Classification simple. In plants processing flammable materials, every effort is made to avoid the escape of such materials and in addition, stringent measures are taken to exclude sources of ignition. A complex array of standards surround this topic which has lead to an overly conservative approach being taken. This type of approach means that much more expensive electrical apparatus than is necessary is installed. To avoid this unnecessary expenditure, Dr Groh clearly explains the relevant standards, so that accurate assessment of the risks associated with hazardous areas is possible. He also identifies possible ignition sources and methods of designing apparatus which do not cause sparks thereby maintaining safety. * Covers must-have information regarding IEC/CENELEC standards in electrical or hazardous area classification * Provides a clear overview of a complex area

Book excerpt: This part of GB 3836 specifies the terms, construction, testing and marking requirements of intrinsically safe apparatus intended for use in an explosive gas atmosphere and for associated apparatus, which is intended for connection to intrinsically safe circuits which enter such atmospheres. This type of protection is applicable to electrical apparatus in which the electrical circuits themselves are incapable of causing an explosion in the surrounding explosive atmospheres. This part is also applicable to electrical apparatus or parts of electrical apparatus located outside the explosive gas atmosphere or protected by another type of protection listed in GB 3836.1-2010, where the intrinsic safety of the electrical circuits in the explosive gas atmosphere may depend upon the design and construction of such electrical apparatus or parts of such electrical apparatus. The electrical circuits exposed to the explosive gas atmosphere are evaluated for use in such an atmosphere by applying this part. The requirements for intrinsically safe systems are provided in GB 3836.18. The requirements for intrinsically safe concepts for fieldbus are provided in GB 3836.19. This part supplements and modifies the general requirements of GB 3836.1-2010, except as indicated in Table 1. Where a requirement of this standard conflicts with a requirement of GB 3836.1-2010, the requirements of this part shall take precedence. If associated apparatus is placed in the explosive gas atmosphere, it must be protected by an appropriate type of protection listed in GB 3836.1-2010, and then the requirements of that method of protection together with the relevant parts of GB 3836.1-2010 also apply to the associated apparatus.

Book excerpt: This book analyzes the causes of failures in computing systems, their consequences, as weIl as the existing solutions to manage them. The domain is tackled in a progressive and educational manner with two objectives: 1. The mastering of the basics of dependability domain at system level, that is to say independently ofthe technology used (hardware or software) and of the domain of application. 2. The understanding of the fundamental techniques available to prevent, to remove, to tolerate, and to forecast faults in hardware and software technologies. The first objective leads to the presentation of the general problem, the fault models and degradation mechanisms wh ich are at the origin of the failures, and finally the methods and techniques which permit the faults to be prevented, removed or tolerated. This study concerns logical systems in general, independently of the hardware and software technologies put in place. This knowledge is indispensable for two reasons: • A large part of a product' s development is independent of the technological means (expression of requirements, specification and most of the design stage). Very often, the development team does not possess this basic knowledge; hence, the dependability requirements are considered uniquely during the technological implementation. Such an approach is expensive and inefficient. Indeed, the removal of a preliminary design fault can be very difficult (if possible) if this fault is detected during the product's final testing.
