Book excerpt: The purpose of this systematic literature review was to investigate the current scientific knowledge of commonalities of mental illness and healthcare access between military veterans and law enforcement personnel. A systematic review utilized several electronic databases to identify relevant peer-reviewed literature published between 2000 and 2022. Ultimately 34 articles met inclusion criteria and were reviewed. Findings suggest that the presence of psychological disorders is not always a reason for not wanting to find or seek treatment for mental health. However, it does show that stigma did predict a lower willingness to seek treatment. Some of the conclusions suggest that with the increase of unit cohesion, much like a scene within some military units, support may have a positive impact amongst law enforcement personnel decreasing stigma and increasing law enforcement's winningest to seek treatment, thus improving not only their relationships with their own families but with the community as well.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between mental health disorders among veterans on the basis of age, gender and income levels. This study relied on secondary data analysis using the California Health Interview Survey adult public use data file. There were 6,058 adult veteran survey participants, of which 212 were adult veterans with mental health disorders. Chi-square analysis results reveal a significant association between veterans with mental health disorders and gender and income levels. No association was found between mental health and age; however, other studies point to an association between the two. Future research should explore these associations while delving deeper into war era, combat trauma, and military branch of service the veteran was exposed to. Additionally, the research should not be limited to one data set and should include all readily available data provided by other institutions such as the VA and other Public Health organizations.

Book excerpt: This study investigates the promise of using therapeutic adventure as an alternative therapeutic approach to address a public health issue: Veterans reticence towards seeking mental health assistance, despite their rising rates of mental health issues. To examine how the intersection between conformity to traditional masculine norms and Outward Bound for Veterans (OB4V) programming impacted psychosocial development, a quasi-experimental, longitudinal design was implemented on 159 male Veterans. The primary goals were twofold: 1) to determine whether improvement in six therapeutic outcome variables occurred due to the OB4V intervention; 2) to discover whether male Veterans' level of conformity to traditional masculine norms influenced change in the therapeutic outcome variables. Outcome variables included: 1) mental health status; 2) personal growth initiative; 3) attitudes towards seeking professional psychological help; 4) psychological mindedness; 5) restriction of emotions; 6) subjective wellbeing. Results indicated a significant effect of treatment, suggesting that the OB4V treatment promoted Veterans improvement in all the therapeutic outcome variables, except psychological mindedness. Findings also showed that the significant effect of treatment was associated with Veterans' improvement in therapeutic outcome variables over all time points irrespective of their level of conformity to traditional masculine norms.
