Download or read book Interprovincial Forest Fertilization Program 1968-1983 written by G. F. Weetman and published by Faculty of Forestry University of British Columbia. This book was released on 1987 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Interprovincial Forest Fertilization Program comprises 81 standardized experiments established by the provincial forest services of New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, and Alberta, and by the Canadian Forestry Service in the provinces of Nova Scotia and Saskatchewan. Seventy-three experiments were remeasured after 10 growing seasons. The field trials were designed to test the effect of nitrogen when applied as urea at the rates of 112 and 224 kg/ha, and the effects of combined nitrogen, phosphorus, and/or potassium additions on the growth of pole-size and semimature conifer stands. In the combination treatments, nitrogen was applied at the high rate, phosphorus as triple super phosphate at the rate of 112 kg/ha, and potassium as potassium chloride, also at the rate of 112 kg/ha. This final report contains the 10-year response data, with sections of the 5-year report included to present a more complete picture.

Book Synopsis Conifer Seedling Mineral Nutrition by : R. van den Driessche
Download or read book Conifer Seedling Mineral Nutrition written by R. van den Driessche and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1990-12-13 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conifer Seedling Mineral Nutrition provides a comprehensive review of conifer seedling mineral nutrition and its significance to forestry. The book covers relationships between mineral supply and uptake; the effects of nutrition on seedling growth; an integration of the ideas of T. Ingestad with classical growth analysis concepts; practical aspects of assessing nutrient status and details of fertilizing bare root and container nursery stock; and fertilizing vegetative propagules. The book also describes and illustrates Mycorrhizas, assessing their importance to plantation establishment in an analysis of recent papers reporting field trials. The effects of nutrients on stress resistance and establishment when applied in the nursery and while planting are discussed in the final chapter. It will prove useful to reforestation research workers, nurserymen, and silviculturalists and should be considered essential reading for forestry students.

Book Synopsis Effects of Accumulation of Air Pollutants in Forest Ecosystems by : B. Ulrich
Download or read book Effects of Accumulation of Air Pollutants in Forest Ecosystems written by B. Ulrich and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is based on a workshop on "Effects of accumulation of air pollutants in forest ecosystems'; held in GOttingen, Federal Republic of Germany, from May 16-18, 1982. This work'shop was initiated and sponsored by the Environmental Agency of the Federal Republic of Germany (project officer: Dr. J. Pankrath) as part of a research contract (project leader: Dr. B. Ulrich). THE PROBLEM SEEN UNDER THE ASPECT OF ADMINISTRATION The problem of forest damage caused by air pollution is not new in Europe. Already in 1983 a comprehensive report from Schroeder and Reuss about vegetation damages by fume in the Harz mountains was published. In 1923, Prof. Dr. Julius Stocklasa of the Bohemian Technical Highschool in Prague was concerned with research of toxical effects of sulphur dioxide in his publication "The damage of vegetation by flue gas and exhalations of facili ties". This comprehensive and instructive work concludes with the sentence: "It is already high time for the governments of all cultural states to take legal, police and private measures in order to prevent damage by flue gases". In the neighbourhood of industries with high gaseous and dust emissions damages have been shown to occur for a long timei these deleterious effects have influenced the growth of trees and in extreme cases have even caused their early death.

Book Synopsis Fishes and Forestry by : Thomas G. Northcote
Download or read book Fishes and Forestry written by Thomas G. Northcote and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 800 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many species of fish occupying inland waters reside in watershedsthat were or still are surrounded by forests and are dependent inmajor ways upon such cover. The interactions between fishes andforests are complex, multifaceted, dynamic processes involving mostinland surface waters, forests, subsurface waters, geology andsoils, climate and its changes, and the biotic components of therelevant ecosystems. These interactions also include the aspects offorestry tied to human development, economics, population growthand even philosophies. Fishes and Forestry is truly a landmark publication. Theeditors, Professors Northcote and Hartman, have drawn together andcarefully edited chapters written by 56 scientists from around theworld, covering a vast wealth of information never before appearingwithin the covers of one book. Following an introductory chapter, this exceptional work is broadly divided into sections covering:the ecology of forests, streams, lakes and estuaries; fish biologyand ecology; forestry activities and their effects on aquaticsystems and fishes; 14 chapters covering examples of fish-forestryinteractions from around the world and a final section coveringmeans of effecting better fish-forestry interactions. Fishes and Forestry is an essential purchase for allthose involved in inland fisheries, forestry and their interaction, including fisheries scientists, fish biologists, ecologists, environmental scientists and forestry scientists. Libraries in alluniversities and research establishments where these subjects arestudied and taught should have several copies on their shelves.
