Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A resourceful insight for stakeholders and reformers on the future of education in Pakistan, Lessons from Implementation of Educational Reforms in Pakistan: Implications for Policy and Practice oAffers challenging research-grounded accounts from a selection of distinct research studies, carried out by AKU-IED faculty. These studies originated from two major multi-year international and donor-funded education improvement projects in Pakistan - the Strengthening Teacher Education in Pakistan (STEP), and the Educational Development and Improvement Programme (EDIP). Providing a blend of qualitative and quantitative accounts of practices, attitudes, and challenges of integrating local and international experiences and ideas around educational reform and professional development at micro-levels, and these projects' promising implications at macro-levels, the bookprovides a distinct understanding of the processes of educational reforms in Pakistan. It delves into issues involved in understanding the nexus of theory and practice in the context of large-scale education reforms. While providing a conceptual base for reflections, it raises such criticalquestions on how local and global successful practices and experiences can be merged into new quality and sustainable projects and frameworks for educational change in Pakistan and other developing countries.
Book Synopsis Peace Education from the Grassroots by : Ian Harris
Download or read book Peace Education from the Grassroots written by Ian Harris and published by IAP. This book was released on 2013-09-01 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historians often ignore the day-to-day struggles of ordinary people to improve their lives. They tend to focus on the accomplishments of illustrious leaders. Peace Education from the Grassroots tells the stories of concerned citizens, teachers, and grassroots peace activists who have struggled to counteract high levels of violence by teaching about the sources for violence and strategies for peace. The stories told here come from the grass roots meaning the educators are close to the forms of violence they are addressing. This collection of essays tells how citizens at the grassroots level developed peace education initiatives in thirteen different nations (Belgium, Canada, El Salvador, Germany, India, Jamaica, Japan, Mexico, the Philippines, South Korea, Spain, Uganda, and the United States). A fourteenth article describes the efforts of the International Red Cross to implement a human rights curriculum to teachers on the ground in the Balkans, Iran, Senegal, and the United Sates. These chapters describe a variety of schools, colleges, peace movement organizations, community-based organizations, and international nongovernmental organizations engaged in peace education.

Book Synopsis The Professional Teacher Educator by : Mieke Lunenberg
Download or read book The Professional Teacher Educator written by Mieke Lunenberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-04-03 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a review of more than twenty years of international research on teacher educators. It offers a solid overview of what is known about the professional roles, professional behaviour and professional development of teacher educators. A systematic analysis of the focus, methods and data sources of 137 key publications on teacher educators make this book into an important reference work for everyone interested in the work of and research on teacher educators. There is a growing consensus that teacher educators largely determine the quality of teachers and hence, the quality of education. Through this book, Lunenberg, Dengerink and Korthagen provide not only insights into the various roles of teacher educators and the complexity of their work, but they also discuss building blocks for ongoing structured and in-depth professional development. The authors clarify that if we wish to take ‘being a teacher educator’ seriously, it is imperative that we build our understanding on research data. The book shows that although the number of studies on teacher educators is growing, the research in this field is still scattered. The authors highlight the need to create a coherent research programme on teacher educators and provide concrete suggestions for such a programme.

Book Synopsis Globalization and the Singapore Curriculum by : Zongyi Deng
Download or read book Globalization and the Singapore Curriculum written by Zongyi Deng and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides a multi-faceted and critical analysis of the Singapore curriculum in relation to globalization. First, it details reform initiatives established by the Singapore government to meet the challenges posed by globalization. Next, Globalization and the Singapore Curriculum presents how these reforms have been translated into programs, school subjects and operational frameworks and then examines, in turn, how well these have been implemented in schools and classrooms across the country. Through this examination, the book reveals how the initiatives, together with their curricular translation and classroom enactment, reflect on the one hand global features and tendencies and, on the other, distinct national traditions, concerns and practices. It brings to light a set of issues, problems and challenges that not only concern policymakers, educators and reformers in Singapore but also those in other countries as well. Written by curriculum scholars, policy analysts, researchers and teacher educators, Globalization and the Singapore Curriculum offers an up-to-date reference for postgraduate students, scholars and researchers in the areas of curriculum and instruction, comparative education, educational sociology, educational policy and leadership in Singapore, the Asia Pacific region and beyond. It also offers a vital contribution to the story of modern education around the globe: providing international students, scholars and researchers valuable insights into curriculum and curriculum reform for the 21st century.

Book Synopsis Standards for Teachers by : Linda Darling-Hammond
Download or read book Standards for Teachers written by Linda Darling-Hammond and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teacher educators and teachers must be leaders in developing learner-centered standards for preparing teachers. Standards can help teachers build their own knowledge and understanding of what helps students learn. As schools undergo restructuring, teachers will be responsible for students, not just subject-matter information; for understanding how learning is occurring; and for having tools to assess how students learn and think as well as what they know. Teachers will also be responsible for curriculum development, assessment, decision making about special needs of students, and reaching out to parents from different communities. Licensing requirements and teacher evaluation requirements generally do not focus on this conception of teaching. The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards is setting standards that reflect the real complexities and real judgments that teachers must deal with. Teachers' development of materials to be submitted for Board certification and teachers' reflection upon their teaching are powerful professional development activities. The goal should be to create, use, reflect upon, operationalize, and enliven standards in a way that produces learning. This kind of work among teachers can lead to the development of a profession that can take ownership and leadership for creating and using an expanding base of knowledge to serve all children well. Download or read book Teacher Agency written by Mark Priestley and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-22 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent worldwide education policy has reinvented teachers as agents of change and professional developers of the school curriculum. Academic literature has analyzed changes in how teacher professionalism is conceived in policy and in practice but Teacher Agency provides a fresh perspective on this issue, drawing upon an ecological theory of agency. Using this model for understanding agency, Mark Priestley, Gert Biesta and Sarah Robinson explore empirical findings from the 'Teacher Agency and Curriculum Change' project, funded by the UK-based Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). Drawing together this research with the authors' international experiences and perspectives, Teacher Agency addresses theoretical and practical issues of international significance. The authors illustrate how teacher agency should be understood not only in terms of individual capacity of teachers, but also in respect of the cultures and structures of schooling.
Book Synopsis Politics of Educational Innovations in Developing Countries by : Nelly P. Stromquist
Download or read book Politics of Educational Innovations in Developing Countries written by Nelly P. Stromquist and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-08-29 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the educational arena, new ideas often compete as solutions to recurrent problems, making the concept of "innovations" a widespread discursive term. While expectations are substantial for each innovation, implementation of ideas has shown them to be more modest in practice. This book examines innovations in several developing countries, presenting case studies of technological, curricular, and organizational innovations selected for their magnitude in financial investment, scope, and duration. The case studies explore the social and political contexts that shaped the features of these innovations and what they accomplished over time in terms of teacher cost reduction, status mobility, access to education, and national unity. The experience of countries such as Brazil, Lesotho, the Philippines, and Namibia, and the influence of international agencies such as the World Bank are described and analyzed against theories of social and organizational change. The case studies themselves also serve as subjects for reflection on the prevailing positivist approaches to research and knowledge. The Politics of Educational Innovations should be of considerable interest to students of educational change, wither in the academic world or in the fields of government and international cooperation.
Book Synopsis Knowledge and Critical Pedagogy by : Joe L. Kincheloe
Download or read book Knowledge and Critical Pedagogy written by Joe L. Kincheloe and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-06-19 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a globalized neo-colonial world an insidious and often debilitating crisis of knowledge not only continues to undermine the quality of research produced by scholars but to also perpetuate a neo-colonial and oppressive socio-cultural, political economic, and educational system. The lack of attention such issues receive in pedagogical institutions around the world undermines the value of education and its role as a force of social justice. In this context these knowledge issues become a central concern of critical pedagogy. As a mode of education that is dedicated to a rigorous form of knowledge work, teachers and students as knowledge producers, anti-oppressive educational and social practices, and diverse perspectives from multiple social locations, critical pedagogy views dominant knowledge policies as a direct assault on its goals. Knowledge and Critical Pedagogy: An Introduction takes scholars through a critical review of the issues facing researchers and educators in the last years of the first decade of the twenty-first century. Refusing to assume the reader’s familiarity with such issues but concurrently rebuffing the tendency to dumb down such complex issues, the book serves as an excellent introduction to one of the most important and complicated issues of our time.

Download or read book Teacher Development and Teacher Education in Developing Countries written by Ayesha Bashiruddin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-07 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contributes to understanding of how individual teachers in developing countries grow and evolve throughout their careers. Based on the analysis of 150 autobiographies of teachers from a range of regions in the developing world including Central Asia, South Asia, East Africa and the Middle East, the author celebrates individual teachers’ voices and explores their narratives. What can these narratives tell us about ‘becoming’ and 'being’ a teacher, and the process of teacher development? What is different about ‘becoming’ and ‘being’ a teacher in the developing world? By analysing the distinct narratives, the author explores these central questions and discusses the implications for further teacher development and education in these regions. In doing so, she transforms teachers’ embodied knowledge into public knowledge, shining a light onto the challenges they face in the Global South and exploring how research can be advanced in the future. This uniquely researched book will be of interest and value to students and scholars of education in the developing world.
