Download or read book The Old is Better written by Robert H. Gundry and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-08-01 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current study of the New Testament features many new interpretations. Robert Gundry's book finds them largely wanting and defends traditional ones. Several of its essays have never been published before. Most of the rest, though previously published, have been updated and otherwise revised, sometimes heavily. The studies cover a wide variety of topics in New Testament study, ranging from the Gospels to Revelation and much in between, as for example theological diversity, symbiosis between theology and genre criticism, pre-Papian tradition concerning Mark and Matthew as apostolically Johannine, and mishnaic jurisprudence as compatible with Jesus' blasphemy. In its entirety, this collection of essays shows the weaknesses of many novel interpretations of the New Testament as well as the essential reliability of earliest traditions concerning the New Testament, and the essential reliability of New Testament traditions themselves.

Book Synopsis The Birth of the Trinity by : Matthew W. Bates
Download or read book The Birth of the Trinity written by Matthew W. Bates and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How and when did Jesus and the Spirit come to be regarded as fully God? The Birth of the Trinity offers a new historical approach by exploring the way in which first- and second-century Christians read the Old Testament in order to differentiate the one God as multiple persons. The earliest Christians felt they could metaphorically 'overhear' divine conversations between Father, Son, and Spirit when reading the Old Testament. When these snatches of dialogue are connected and joined, they form a narrative about the unfolding interior divine life as understood by the nascent church. What emerges is not a static portrait of the triune God, but a developing story of divine persons enacting mutual esteem, voiced praise, collaborative strategy, and self-sacrificial love. The presence of divine dialogue in the New Testament and early Christian literature shows that, contrary to the claims of James Dunn and Bart Ehrman (among others), the earliest Christology was the highest Christology, as Jesus was identified as a divine person through Old Testament interpretation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of all the texts in the Hebrew and Christian scriptures, perhaps no book has a more colorful history of interpretation than Isaiah. A comprehensive history of this interpretation between the prophet Malachi and the first days of Christianity, Joseph Blenkinsopp's Opening the Sealed Book traces three different prophetic traditions in Isaiah -- the "man of God," the critic of social structures, and the apocalyptic seer. Blenkinsopp explores the place of Isaiah in Jewish sectarianism, at Qumran, and among early Christians, touching on a number of its themes, including exile, "the remnant of Israel," martyrdom, and "the servant of the Lord." Encompassing several disciplines -- hermeneutics, the Dead Sea Scrolls, Second Temple studies, Christian origins -- Opening the Sealed Book will appeal to Jewish and Christian scholars as well as readers fascinated by the intricate and influential prophetic visions of Isaiah.

Download or read book Interpretations of American History Vol. I written by Francis G. Couvares and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2000-07 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contrary to conventional wisdom, no area of study is outdated more quickly than history, and no time has been more turbulent for the discipline than our own. This classic point/counterpoint reader in American history, now in a completely revised and updated seventh edition, takes note of history's impermanence, giving voice to the new without disposing of the old. In ten lively chapters, essays by the editors introduce dialectical readings by distinguished historians on topics from Reconstruction to the present. The essays and readings address history's timeless questions: "Reconstruction: Change or Stasis?," "American Imperialism: Economic Expansion or Ideological Crusade?," and "The Civil Rights Movement: Top-Down or Bottom-Up?" New readings are included on African Americans, women, and immigrants. In the fray of debate, eminent historians from Samuel Hays and Alfred Chandler to John Lewis Gaddis, Walter LaFeber, and Kathryn Kish Sklar struggle to interpret the past. The editors'essays moderate.
