Book excerpt: The Second International Conference on Hybrid Learning was organized by the School of Continuing and Professional Studies of The Chinese University of Hong Kong and University of Macau in August 2009. ICHL 2009 was an inventive experience for the Hong Kong and Macau tertiary higher education. The conference aims to provide a good platform for knowledge exchange on hybrid learning by focusing on student centered education. The technique is to supplement traditional classroom learning with eLearning. The slogan is “Education leads eLearning,” not vice versa. The me- odology is that at least 30% of learning activities are done by eLearning. The outcome is for students to learn at any time at any place. eLearning can increase students’ lea- ing productivity and reduce teachers’ administration workload alike. It is a new culture for students, teachers and school administrators to adopt in the twenty-first century. The conference obtained sponsorship from Pei Hua Education Foundation Limited, City University of Hong Kong, ACM Hong Kong Section, and Hong Kong Computer Society. Hybrid learning originated from North America in 2000, and is an ongoing trend. It is not merely a simple combination of direct teaching and eLearning. It encompasses different learning strategies and important elements for teaching and learning. It - phasizes outcome-based teaching and learning, and provides an environment for knowledge learning. Students are given more opportunities to be active learners and practice practical skills such as communication, collaboration, critical thinking, cr- tivity, self-management, self-study, problem solving, analysis and numeracy.

Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2008 in the subject Business economics - Offline Marketing and Online Marketing, grade: 86 %, Cologne Business School Köln, language: English, abstract: The medium Television in Germany looks back on a more than 70-years old history. Since the first regular television programme was broadcasted in 1935 – which has been the first worldwide – television was subject of permanent change. Broadcasting and recording techniques, end devices, public perception and acceptance and content developed significantly over the decades. Starting with a single channel broadcasting black and white free-to-air, today consumers with the proper equipment can receive hundreds or even thousands of different channels that serve every imaginable need. Free-to-air broadcasting was little by little replaced by cable and satellite broadcasting, starting in 1983 respectively in 1988. Hand in hand with the digitisation era a new medium arose in the 1990’s: broadcasting via the internet. Due to high bandwidth requirements this distribution channel developed slowly. Even nowadays this represents the bottleneck of the potential “TV of the future”, called Internet Protocol Television (IPTV). However, IPTV has yet earned an early round of applause which is legitimated by the numerous advantages it offers for the consumer as well as for the distributer, content provider and advertiser.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transactional Distance and Adaptive Learning takes a fresh look at one of the pioneering educational theories that accommodates the impact of information and communications technologies in learning. The theory of transactional distance (TTD) provides a distinct analytical and planning foundation for educators to conduct an overarching inquiry into transitioning from mass instructional and management systems in higher education to dynamic and transformational futures that focus on each individual learner. Based on the TTD, this pragmatic approach offers instructors, administrators, students, and other stakeholders a comprehensive planning method to assess the current state of their instructional, learning, and management practices and to develop alternative models to prescribe future improvements in their institution. This complex, self-organized, and adaptive method includes current and emergent properties of: hardware, software, and telecommunications systems that allow faculty, students, and administrators to communicate; instructional and curriculum systems that provide teaching and learning environments for faculty and students; and management, societal, and global systems that influence how institutions are supported, funded, and managed.

Book excerpt: Internet Protocol television (IPTV) is a system through which Internet television services are delivered using the architecture and networking methods of the Internet Protocol Suite over a packet-switched network infrastructure (such as the Internet or other access network), instead of being delivered through traditional radio frequency broadcast, satellite signal, and cable television (CATV) formats. IPTV services may be classified into three main groups: live television, with or without interactivity related to the current TV show; time-shifted television: catch-up TV (replays a TV show that was broadcast hours or days ago), start-over TV (replays the current TV show from its beginning); video on demand (VOD): browse a catalog of videos, not related to TV programming. IPTV is distinguished from general Internet-based or web-based multimedia services by its on-going standardization process (e.g., European Telecommunications Standards Institute) and preferential deployment scenarios in subscriber-based telecommunications networks with high-speed access channels into end-user premises via set-top boxes or other customer-premises equipment.
